Hey Amy, sorry to hear about your sick EE. I think drug of choice would be Tiamulin (brand name Denagard). It is not a drug primarily used for chickens, I think either cow or pig. It is very expensive and I only found it online. 32oz bottle $39.99 at Valley Vet.
Anyway the treatment dose is 16cc per gallon of water for 5-7 days. As a preventative it is 8cc per gallon of water for 3 days each month.

Another drug you could use: Tylan 50 I know Tractor Supply carries it, not sure about Farm & Fleet or Fleet Farm. This is what I have written in my notes:

1/2 cc for 6-7 lb birds Injected
.25cc per lb of chicken weight (bantams) injected

1/2 cc down throat adult (juveniles)
1/4 cc half grown (chicks)

Then my notes get fuzzy. I have 1/10 cc ????? not sure given to what size bird????

For a eye wash and nasal flush: Mix Tylan 50 with sterile Saline Wash, (1 part tylan to 4 parts wash), put in each eye and use as nasal flush. Cindlady this might work for your guinea?????

Tylan Powder: (alot more expensive) 1 teaspoon per 5 gallons of water for 3 days or 1-5 days (?????)

I got all of these off of BYC at one point.

I would do a search for MG (Mycoplasma Gallisepticum) and Infectious Coryza and treat for those. No I wouldn't cull your birds. The only way you know what you have would be to have a swab sent in. Once they recover if they have one of these they will be carriers IF that is what they have.
Most backyard flocks are carriers !!! Someone on BYC talkd to a state vet and was told that.

Duramycin might help also. If you have any Oxine you can spray a fine mist with a vaproizer in your coop for all of the birds to breath in. Had to order that also. Rival Animal was the cheapest.

Sad
news here too, last night OM DH told me he found one of my peahens dead. I have to go look at it today to see if she was thin etc.

Oh and Amyable, while you have your chicken in QT check her over good for lice/mites. That will decrease their resistence to disease by weakening their immune system.

Good Afternoon!

I am having trouble reading today. I need to go to the Opthamologist later. Am having lots of blurring and floaters in my right eye. I thought it was just a migraine but now I am not so sure. .

That is so cute Tiny being the dr for the guinea. yay

Amyable hope you get it figured out what ever is wrong with your flock.

Everyone has their own treatments that suit them best. Sounds like you need some Old Timer advice.

Tiki !! That doesn't sound good. Hope it's nothing serious. Are you taking any new meds ??? Do Cataracts do that? We are that age you know. I was thinking when I go down to Racine in March I'll make an appointment for my eyes as well.
It is nothing to put off. Good luck.

Looks like I'm going back to town today, we need dog food !!!

Hey all...Amy, sorry to hear about the sneezes! You can tel if it is Coryza by smelling that chicken around the head area...if she smells like dead stuff that is what she has. Sulmet or Tylan50 to treat. I have the liquid and the powder respectively and they mix easily with water. Easy to use however they are carriers for life if they have Coryza . I think that is why old timers kill the affected birds immediately! Before the rest of the flock gets it. I too heard some sneezing in my striped pen the other day..it is Elaine the Dominique. THere are only 6 birds in there so I will start to treat them tonight. I think my flock already has something that they carry...not sure. I want to get some of that Oxine too; it sounds like a good thing to use periodically.

Jim--let's have some pics of your new (nameless) dog already! I want to see her. Did you teach her anything yet? Guineas learning she wont hurt them?

We are going to see War Horse this afternoon....cant wait! Terri O

ETA: We must all be on the same wave length...I was thinking today that I needed to get into the eye doctor myself!

Would anyone in northern WI, near da UP, be interested in a pair of large fowl Araucana hens? They are lavender colored, and just started laying. I have decided that even though I ADORE the lavender color, I'd rather not focus on lavenders since I don't have a black Araucana male. And my splash might wreck some havoc if combined with lavender. They are very friendly and curious. They hatched this past July. They are both true Araucanas, BUT are tailed and cleanfaced. Even if you aren't interested in breeding, they'd make lovely additions to any flock. I'd rather them go together, since they are always side by side.

TO You go to War Horse first !!! I heard it is tear jerker. Even if no horses are harmed I hate to think of what happened to the real War Horses !! But ignoring it doesn't make it go away. I hope after seeing this movie that non horsey people realize just how much they have contributed !!

Here is where I got my Oxine It is only $19.99 if you buy 4 bottles. And the shipping is reasonable. You guys down south should go in on an order. You don't need to order the citric acid. It is way to strong that way.

Also TO, I've been meaning to ask you. What do you feed your parrots !!! I can't believe the prices on parrot food. Mine are on Pretty Bird Species Specific. I always got it at Foster & Smith on sale for about $35. And I was using Mazuri (made by purina) from the country feed store. $34 for 20lbs. They Country store hasn't gotten any in.
Well, Foster & Smith don't have any on sale and it is $49.99 for 20 lbs.
I remember years ago thinking $20 a bag was high. That was a buck a pound !!! And we complain about chicken feed prices sky rocketing !!!! I hate the thought of giving them seed/pellet mix, I think they waste so much plus is it really cheaper in the long run ???? The way some of mine drop the pellets and waste them, makes me wonder !!
th.gif

I only live 32 miles from Foster & Smith but I notice that they have free shipping (even on bird food (not dog or cat)) if you spend over $49. AND if you go on their auto ship plan your tenth shipment is FREE. So if you have two bags shipped your 10th shipment would be two bags, well I guess that makes sense, so for every 10 bags you have shipped on autoship you will get 1 free.
Dang, if it isn't one animal needing feed it's another !!!

I am going to go buy some peas for split pea soup !! YUM !!!

Thanks guys. I am leaning towards the Tylan50. I'll have to go smell that chicken later. That's a weird thing to say. I didn't notice a bad odor when I moved her last night. FT I did recently dust for mites/lice, should be all good there. Is there an egg-throwaway period when using Tylan?

I really wanna see War Horse too! DH keeps asking when we're going to go to Sherlock Holmes 2. I say, with what extra $, exactly? Maybe when they both go to the cheap seats...

Hey all!
Just catching up here! War Horse was amazing! Made me want to drive to Cali to hug my horse! I only cried 4 times! That was a lot less then I thought I'd cry!

Amy- I agree with FT and TO. Tylan will help. Duramiacin won't hurt and can help prevent a secondary infection. If I remember right, egg withdrawal time is one day after last treatment with Tylan. You might want to double check the label though!
It very important get them warm. If you can, set up your QT/ hospital area with a lamp or heat source -that will help them a great deal and get them going in the right direction.
Also, add vitamins and electrolytes along with sugar in their water. If you don't have any Vit's & E's then you can use just sugar. Depending on if they want to drink or not, you might have to drench them with a syringe to start them drinking. I also highly recommend to get some Vet Rx-you may have to order it though. It is an very "old school" herbal treatment that you drop into their nostrils and a drop in their mouths. I also drip some onto their little breast feathers to help keep their little airways open. That stuff is amazing! If you find it and it is labeled for another type of animal, say a rabbit or cat, you can use it for chickens. It is all the same stuff, they just use different packaging. Here is a link to Jeffers so you can see what it looks like. (If you google vetrx you will get a pet supply distribution company!)

here is the link for the pet version of Vetrx, although the poultry version is cheaper:

Wish I was closer to Norther WI... would love Lavs!

Say in winter feeding... what do you supplement more with... cracked corn or scratch? I feed typical layer feed ( with grit adn oyster when needed) and they get lots of kitchen scraps... and I know they love both corn and scratch, but which is better? I need to get some more and saw that scratch is on sale at F & F...

thanks
