Raim-really fast sevin is correct I think it comes in 5% .Dust everything that is not red hot and nailed down..ok dust the nailed down stuff too.
Eggs should be fine but if you don't want them, then just toss em.
Ideally clean out the bedding esp. if its deep but if you can't then dust the heck out if it. Try the dust and fluff bedding...dust and fluff bedding....dust and fluff method...

Ok.....Afternoon All!!
Not much going on here. The Girls gave me 7 eggs so far, one of which I dropped during collection. *sigh* Third time this week...I need to put double sided sticky tape on my fingers when I go collect the eggs!

What else...oh, I've decided that I am banning my self from you people....Why on God's Green Earth do I even read what you people post?!?LOL!!!

Do you know what I was doing while everyone here was watching football instead of chatting and keeping me out of trouble?? Take a wild guess........Give up?!?!
Yep! I bought incubator Numero Three-O. I was going to get two, but came to my senses after I hit the buy now button on the first one!!!! All this talk of getting new incubators went straight to my head. It also helps that my LG is being temperamental.
*sigh*

Apyl- Ok I have to say this just because I'm personally not a huge McMurry fan. There are a lot better hatcheries IMHO. Welp in Iowa, Ideal in Texas, Privett in New Mexico, and Cackle in Missouri. Then there is Mt. Healthy in Ohio and Meyer in Ohio as well. My best luck has been Ideal. Privett I've never had trouble with but I know a few people have had some DOA's from them. Welp is almost across the street from McMurry and they have a good selection and Cackle has always given us good stock.
If your looking for close, try looking at Abendroths. His layers are average $1.80 to $1.90 for pullets. His Cornish Rock meaties are $1.10 to $1.25. He also has Freedom Rangers (meat bird) for $1.35.
Sunnyside has a Hobby Farm Assortment of heavies for $.736 each (add $6.00 for orders less then 100) but they are hatchery choice. (Meaning breeds and sex are at their discretion).
Ok, now that I had to be all nose-y neighbor and opinionated and all

......Yep we will give you a lot of ideas...So my advise: run while you still can and you still have your sanity....LOL!!!

JK!!........ Stay here and keep me from buying another incubator....LOL!!!

FT:Two piggies huh...Well I'm thinking either you got brother and a sister or two sisters.....So I'm voting for two sisters! Keep Mr. Porky outta trouble....Or lead him into trouble...just depends with us girls right!....

TO-good job on the bowling!

DrH-Yep! That fur is from Mama pulling out her fur to line her nest. Amazingly she is not bald....

bl4-Good to see you again....Bee deaths always make me sad. Honeybees are one of those insects that I think are a lot more endangered them most people believe. I'd love to have a few hives myself but I have a dog that is highly allergic to bee stings. So as long as I have her, no bee keeping for me. I guess I could always start to learn though for when I can have them...

Cind-I can hardly believe that the babies survived! It's her first litter. My husband is very happy with her.
To bad about your PR and the Hawk. It sure was nice of you to call a rehab specialist and have them come get the hawk.

GR65-Bet you have a broody!! Good luck with that!! LOL!! She will keep the eggs and chicks warm. The hen never leaves the nest long enough for the eggs or chicks to freeze. If you think the egg eater can be an issue, you can try moving her to the brooder. If the move does not break her brood, then stuff some eggs under her. Being that she is the top hen and a crankie broody, my guess is that the egg eater will leave her alone though.

BF4-I love that your son said he was "bonded" to Venus!! To cute!!! He will have a great friend in that little chick!

Off I go to feed the dogs and cats....

Ok this is for you rabbit lovers: I was horrible and just had to poke around Maggies nest. She has six fat and sleek little kits. All black and one has a little white spot in top if it's head. Also think of it as a little pay back for the cute chickie pics....hehehe

Are you my Mama...

Terry, if I was on a bowling team, I'd adopt you as the league would handicap your average. What you lack in skill, you more than make up in company!! (For the record, my average used to be 135 but the best I've ever bowled was a 221! Too many aches and pains to bowl now adays. I liked it when I did though!)

Re: the "person of interest" (Dad) and the two kids in the house that blew up -- man, I hope he rots in HE double hockey sticks! I was outraged when I heard about it yesterday. No, I don't agree that it was sad that he was in a custody battle with the missing wife's parents. He might have been "sad" but normal "sad" people don't KILL THEIR CHILDREN because of a custody battle --they do everything in their power to prove good parenting & get their kids back. He killed them to spite the grandparents (in my humble opinion). People who kill children deserve a special place in HE double hockey sticks as far as I'm concerned. The no-good-SOB should have taken himself out if he was so "sad" but to terrorize & kill those poor motherless babies.... Just proves that the grandparents were right to be concerned enough about him to try to get full custody. The world is better off without him and hopefully the kids are with mom now.... My opinion is based on what I heard or read yesterday. The fact that he had it all planned, had the goodbye email sent, stayed there lying-in-wait, grabbed the kids inside (for what was supposed to be a SUPERVISED VISIT!!!), locked the social worker outside and then blew up the house before she even had time to call her supervisor demonstrates the most heinous type of EVIL. He wasn't insane, insane people can't premeditate or grasp the end outcome- that SOB knew exactly what he was doing. Evil, pure evil. The only thing that brings me any comfort at all is that it happened so fast the kids probably didn't comprehend what was happening. I'm hoping it was quick and the boys didn't suffer.... I haven't read/heard about it today so maybe there's more information that I don't know yet. Cases like this just chill me to the bone especially because it plants the idea for copycat like-minded evil people.... Sorry for my tangent here, but it disturbs me greatly!

Ok, on a lighter note: -- love those baby bunnies! Did I read they are raised as meat rabbits? Do you process them yourself & if so at what age? Just curious. I have 4 bunnies myself and keep them all separate as none of them are fixed. (I have them for their cuteness & fertilizer production.) I've thought that if, god forbid, I had to have them as a food source (as in major natural disaster where food isn't readily available), I'd breed them then. I'm not even sure if I like rabbit to eat! As some of you may recall, I hatched a bunch of ducks with the intent of having some of them as a food source, but it turns out I don't like duck meat so that plan went away....

Missed the first half of the superbowl but got home in time for the half-time show -- yawn. She looks great, etc., but I'm not a huge fan so I found her show to be pretty uninspiring. I wasn't that impressed with the second 1/2 of the game either, cause my Packers' weren't playing! I was rooting for the Patriots (son's favorite team) but it wasn't to be.... Oh well, hopefully we'll have Packers in the Superbowl next year!!

Well, I have to go get a heat pack on my neck. Have a good evening, folks!

I do totally agree with you about the evil SOB who killed his children. and I think he also killed his wife...... when her body is found I bet that is what they find... I also hope he rots in the underworld forever for what he did........... makes me just Ill knowing people like this exist......... like we all don't have enough to worry about these days.

On another note........ arggggggg I also found mites today on my rooster, but not on my hens can that be? I immediately bathed him in flean and tick shampoo blow dried him dusted his butt with Python dust, and quickly used what was left in the coop on the roosts and floor. Where in the H e Double toothpicks did these come from????? never had chickens here before last March, didn't buy any new ones... did use hay thrown down to keep there feeties warm when it snowed in the run... but it was outside in the cold how could they survive? Wild birds Yah we have lots of those..mostly sparrows. all over my nice warm barn... Also can't find any on my girls.. just the white rooster... and he was loaded... how can that be? I started a thread maybe you all that have had this can advise us idiots who have never had to deal with bugs on our chickens before.... I could just cry........ I feel terrible for them. so waiting on the boy to call so I can go to fleet and buy more dust..... going to buy tyhe 20 lb bucket so I have it on hand and enough to do 20 chickens, plus coop and run... argggggggggggg I hate this, bad enough my hubbies x sends his kids with lice every year, that I have to get rid of...... can ypou all hear me screaming..........? arg grumble grumble.....arggggg :he :barnie :rant
Also can people, dogs cats horses get them as well????? helpppppppppppp

Evening All... yep 5% sevin dust is the correct stuff raim...I even dust nest boxes..the eggs are fine and I never toss any because of using sevin.

Ghost...I always prefer to move the broody to her own private space to hatch and care for the young. Some folks don't have a problem when the hens move off to their quiet spot in the barn, and later shows up with chicks....however in the only space available being the coop...it works better to move them....in my opinion. If you leave her be...let us know how it goes.

Nothing new here... bigz

BigZ problem is, is she really broody. she gets up outa the box a few times a day to eat and frolic with the others in the run maybe a few hours...... then back to the box..... not really sure what to do I tried putting an egg under her today, and she moved to another empty box..HMM I'm stumped.. what you think is going on I did check her fro the mites I see nothing on her....... right now I wish all my chickens were white so much easier to see them little buggers...Kim

Kim...doesn't sound like she is rock solid broody. She might be getting in the mood somewhat. I would wait and see what happens as the days get longer and warmer. If she's really broody you'll know when she's steadfast staying put. Reaching under her will create quite a warning.

Elaine-You stopped by again!!! Yeah!!!
Yes those meat rabbits. DH and I will process them ourselves since finding a butcher to process them is tricky. They will be around 8 to 12 (fryers) weeks when they are processed. It's more weight then age. 5#'s is the average to process at. I might let a few get more mature by several months to get a more flavorful meat.In Europe those are sold ads "roasters". Feed to Meat ratio, rabbit is the most efficient meat animal there is.
They don't really taste like chicken nor should they. They are all white meat, low in cholesterol. Higher protein but lower fat and moister then chicken meat has. Cooking rabbit right is the key to enjoying it. Lots of people tend to want to cook it like you would a chicken but that makes it tough and yucky. Low, gentle heat is the key. Low and slow as dh says!
I actually bbq mine. I have a grill that I can set the temp to 200 and I just cook the rabbit slow. I rub cajun seasoning on it and it's yummy! I also will toss it in the crock pot to make a stew but I have to add apple juice, a little water and some fat. I have a new recipe for a rabbit roast that I have yet to try.
I have the meat rabbits to be more self reliant. Plus I have then for a "survival" situation too. Good trade item if need be. I use their manure for composting and fertilizer. I'm thinking about starting a vermiculture (worm garden!) project. Rabbit manure is the best for growing worms. I have to read up on tanning their pelts. That I've never done before. Should be interesting.
I also have a pet bunny. He is a Mini Rex. He lives in a cage next to the TV and is completely spoiled rotten. More pet then meat rabbit, but if I had to, I can use him for breeding. Now that would be interesting!
If you decide you ever want to try some, let me know. I'm sure I'll have some to spare at one point!

Well she does growl at me when I get too close when she is sitting, and all my girls will peck at me if I take there eggs away and they aren't done yet.....LOL
Ms Prissy will have such a fit clucking at me that I have to give the egg back until she leaves the nest.. silly chicken, anyway what else will she do besides growl or bite me.? maybe I should start to wearing a leather glove huh? hehehe so she don't bite my finger off... I really hope she decides not to do anything just yet it's going to get cold again starting tomorrow , and I think my egg eater is at it again I found a shell well half of one in a nest tonight at 6 when I fed the horses...... I have to get that darn roll out nest box made.... been putting it off for months because of the cold, and I thought I had her broke after separating her and vitamins, and milk for days she hasn't done this in months...... so will start all over again. What feed do you feed your chickens? have you used fleets brand of layer that's what I been using along with 18% mash from the feed mill, plus corn and Boss........ not sure why I have an egg eater, maybe the vitamin thing again she was fine while on it. they haven't been getting it the last month or so well just before Christmas I ran out I guess it's been longer than a month..... Oh well will deal with it somehow.I would hate to cull her but if she keeps it up she will be a stewing hen...... Kim
