Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

TO was it you that rents out property? Or CC? I am trying to rent out my home and have a couple applicants-would love some input. Thanks!!

Here's a start. http://wcca.wicourts.gov/index.xsl Check them out.
You'll have to decide if you want to do a yearly lease or month to month. It's easier to get them out with a month to month. You don't have to give a reason. When I rented my duplex I did month to month.

I should have specified, the bees are from the neighbor of my in-laws. If you are in Portage County and you run across Honey from Jake's Bess that would be the neighbor (I think that is the name he sells under.... just look for Jake's and Amherst Junction).

My youngest daughter LOVES bees; she would like to have a hive of her own someday. The Nature Center in New London (Mosquito Hill) has an event in September called Honey Sunday. The local beekeepers come and give demonstrations and talks on the art of beekeeping. This past year they had working hives out in the field with beekeepers demonstrating how to take the comb out of the hive (enclosed in screen tents of course).

Anybody else here have hypothyroidism???? I am having big time issues with my memory! It is so frustrating! I have misplaced paperwork and now cannot find it, I have even misplaced my wedding ring!

Ugh, this SUCKS!

I have started my training for the mud run.... I think I need to run down to TO's and toss hay bales around...... I can barely do 2 pull-ups! How am I ever going to do this?! I think I have completely lost it this time.......

Angie, I believe Raim rents out property......

I think it's Hens and Roo's that knows all about renting?

It helps to cover the nests with a curtain. I have some canvas like material that hangs across the entrance with a slit in the middle for entry and exit. Egg suckers can't eat eggs they can't see. Some egg eaters are just relentless and can teach others the bad habit. Adding dry cat food to the boss and corn will up the protein value of your treat. It might help, however culling might work best.

I feed the 18% poultry ration from Magee feed mill in Embarrass. Better fresher feed and less expensive. It's a semi-course layer mash that can be fed dry or mixed with water or gravy....We feed dry in hanging feeders and in a seperate cake pan we add feed, water, or gravy for a warm treat when really cold out.

I was gonna get into beekeeping too. My neighbor has hives and a friend at church also is a keeper. Some day maybe...it is definitley interesting.

Interesting stuff on the rabbits too MLH.

Hen & Roos has alot of Rentals. I'm sure she will chime in when she gets online.

I have Hypothyroidism and terrible memory but I' alot older then you !! lol I also have fibromyalgia, (memory problems with that are called fibro fog LOL) AND just found out I was extremely low on Vitamin D. Taking Vitamin D has helped me get more energy back. I will be retested in March.
So if you might want to get tested or start a supplement or drink milk !!
Don't get my earlier post wrong, I do believe that man should rot in H3LL for killing his children.

I don't think I could ever eat a bunny. But that is just me.
Hey Bigz, when I was at Menards I looked at the Seven 5. It contains Carbyl, is that what you use? I use the actual poultry dust in the farm section at Fleet Farm. I bought the big container for $30. Alot cheaper that way. I put it in a nylon stocking or panty hose. Double layer. Then just puff it on them. It is way to easy to use more then you need to otherwise. I also bought one of those puffer things in the garden section to puff it in the pens. I obviously didn't do it enough or should I say not at all since I thought I had solved the problem.
I don't think it will ever go away. I don't think you can ever kill every single mite and sooner or later they will come back. Sparrows are suppose to be big time carriers.

As far as egg eaters I've heard that increasing their protein might help. You can cook up some eggs for them.

Any more guesses on my piggies ??????

Elaine-You stopped by again!!! Yeah!!!
Yes those meat rabbits. DH and I will process them ourselves since finding a butcher to process them is tricky. They will be around 8 to 12 (fryers) weeks when they are processed. It's more weight then age. 5#'s is the average to process at. I might let a few get more mature by several months to get a more flavorful meat.In Europe those are sold ads "roasters". Feed to Meat ratio, rabbit is the most efficient meat animal there is.
They don't really taste like chicken nor should they. They are all white meat, low in cholesterol. Higher protein but lower fat and moister then chicken meat has. Cooking rabbit right is the key to enjoying it. Lots of people tend to want to cook it like you would a chicken but that makes it tough and yucky. Low, gentle heat is the key. Low and slow as dh says!
I actually bbq mine. I have a grill that I can set the temp to 200 and I just cook the rabbit slow. I rub cajun seasoning on it and it's yummy! I also will toss it in the crock pot to make a stew but I have to add apple juice, a little water and some fat. I have a new recipe for a rabbit roast that I have yet to try.
I have the meat rabbits to be more self reliant. Plus I have then for a "survival" situation too. Good trade item if need be. I use their manure for composting and fertilizer. I'm thinking about starting a vermiculture (worm garden!) project. Rabbit manure is the best for growing worms. I have to read up on tanning their pelts. That I've never done before. Should be interesting.
I also have a pet bunny. He is a Mini Rex. He lives in a cage next to the TV and is completely spoiled rotten. More pet then meat rabbit, but if I had to, I can use him for breeding. Now that would be interesting!
If you decide you ever want to try some, let me know. I'm sure I'll have some to spare at one point!

Aw, shucks, I can feel the love!

Ha. Seriously, I read all the WI messages online just about every day, every other day at the most. I'm just lurking and usually show up as the mystery reader. You guys are pretty entertaining, that's for sure! Usually don't have much to say but enjoy hearing everyone's stories and comments. I had so many problems with signing in before that I gave up in frustration. That problem seems resolved for now, hence my post....

Thanks so much for the meat rabbit info! We used to eat a lot of rabbit and squirrel when I was growing up (seems like I was always lucky (not) & chewed on the buck shot) but I don't remember if I liked the meat or not. I just remember being grateful for the meat. When you're hungry -you eat - and nothing went to waste at our house! I love the idea of being more self-reliant just don't know if I am brave enough to do the meat rabbit thing. Might check w/hubby to see if he's ever skinned a rabbit.... but I'll start with a grocery store rabbit first to see if something we'd eat or not. Are some rabbits breeds better for meat rabbits? Sorry for all the questions.... I love the idea that the rabbit poo is good for vermiculture! Now that you mention it, I think I have heard that -- just another thing I forgot. I may just add some droppings to my worm bin - bet they'll like the treat! ha Thanks for the reminder!

On the domestic side, I'm dehydrating some green grapes & making raisins for the first time. They sure are chewy!!

Can't wait for this Spring & Summer to see what fruit my trees may bear, looking forward to new types of garlic, etc. I love the harvest anticipation (not necessarily all the work! ha) That reminds me, I need to figure out how and when to prune my fruit trees. Anyone else do this and want to share their schedule? Anyone starting any seeds this month? I think brussel sprouts is the only thing for early Feb. Does anyone start celery? I usually pick up a 6 pack of starter plants when I can find them but they're such slow growers just thinking that may be an early starter, too.

Well, I've got to go, lots to do before I get some shut eye! Stay warm, cold spell coming again...

Me, too! Last thing I need on my bucket list for yard stuff (until I add more that is!) I have a lot to learn yet & have to figure out the $ part. The equipment isn't cheap and I'm not handy so I can't build any of it myself. My son (17) is very, very leery of the idea and I haven't mentioned it to hubby yet... Some things are better if they're just done & apologized for later rather than asking & being told no and then it's an uphill battle, you know what I mean? Much easier to say, "oops, sorry, hun...." If you don't ask, you don't get told no, right!!!

I'm also waiting for Madison to finalize their beekeeping ordinances so I'll know what's what. Don't want to be a bigger outlaw than I already am!! I also need to figure out how I can keep them in close proximity to the chickens & ducks. Every time I saw a bee around chickens or ducks last year they got eaten/gobbled up!! There's some beekeeping classes coming up in Madison. If anyone wants the info/schedule, let me know & I'll dig the info up. The classes aren't cheap but from my cursory review the price includes everything you need to get started including the proper clothing, smoker, etc.... Has anyone seen the observatory beehive at the Madison Zoo? I just learned there is one there, so I'll have to make a special trip to find it this year!

Okay I'm beat, night y'all!

P.S. Am just now hearing on Nightline that that monster took a hatchet to the boys before the explosion! sick, sick, sick, EVIL EVIL EVIL

Way to go on the bowling TO. You'd whip me easy.

Sorry to hear about your plumbing woes. I don't think a possum is your culpret.

That is sad about the bees, BL4. They have been having a hard enough time trying to survive as it is. I saw a documentary about the bee population decline in China, I think it was? Anyway, they are so bad that they had to have people go out and actually pollenate the flowers on the fruit trees by hand.
ep.gif
They said one person could maybe get 1 tree done a day. Imagine a whole orchard full! Wouldn't want that job. I would love to get into beekeeping one day, though. I hope you find your ring. Have you ever tried taking ginko? My DH always swears by it so I finally tried it. It seems to be working so far.
Cind, great minds think alike!

And I agree that FT is probably sleeping in the barn after her latest addition.

They sure are cute though. Too bad they never stay that small. Sorry to hear about your PR, but I applaud you on calling the DNR & donating your girl. I would have done the exact same thing. While I don't enjoy seeing critters killing other critters, namely mine, I do understand that everyone has to eat. I'm glad you're feeling better too.

Apyl, I'd avoid buying chicks from TSC if I were you. I've done it & regretted it. For a first time chicken owner, I would recommend that you get yourself some heritage breed chicks from a reputable hatchery, have them vaccinated & feed them a high quality medicated chick starter. And do lots and lots of research prior to getting them, as I am sure you are already doing.
smile.png
And feel free to ask us anything. There are lots of very experienced chicken owners here who are more than happy to help someone out. Like Raim & Jim, I agree on rethinking having the brooder in the kitchen. Chicks create tons of filth, so a bathroom or laundry room might be a better choice. Unless you're addicted to cleaning.
lau.gif
If you don't get them too early, you could start them indoors, then move them to the garage to acclimate them to the cooler outdoor weather before moving them to the coop.

At least you have the stones to admit it, Jim.

And noone can deny that through mistakes comes wisedom, (unless they're a dumba** that never learns from their mistakes. Plenty of those around, unfortunately). Apyl, Jim is definitely one of our chicken experts around here. Although I'm not too sure about singing his praises after that measurement comment............
Yep, you're right MLH. Payback is a *itch. Those baby bunnies are the most darling little things! Too sweet!
love.gif

Raim, I know the feeling. I had one hen totally infested with the tiniest little mites you ever saw. At least I only found them on her, but I dusted the heck out of everything anyway. I can't remember which one it was offhand, but I guess there is one mite that thrives in the winter & dies back in summer. Wild birds & rodents are the biggest carriers.

Quote:
Oh, just admit it, Bf4. You're gonna do it. How can you resist all the talk & chick pics that are going to be going on here?????

No candling yet. I'm too nervous. I've been wanting lavs for sooooooo darn long. I'm afraid I'll drop one.

Well, better post this before I loose it. Sweet dreams, all!

Big Z is that the mash? because that's what we use equal amounts of mash and layer feed plus the corn and Boss, I also like the magee feeds we used to goto the place in Marion, but there more money for less value. I also grew them amaranth, and foxtail millet which is added as well, they get a dozen scrambled eggs every other day mixed with there kefir and a veggi............ plus greens, crushed egg shells, and oyster shell free choice. my chickens are totally spoiled so I don't really think its a protein, issue its got to be a vitamin deficiency.. or something...... and now I think I have 2 egg eaters, because I locked up Jasmine earlier and at 9 tonight when i closed up the coop and turned off the light I had another egg half eaten in the nest box..... no wonder my 14/ 15 eggs a day has become 12 or 13...... she taught another 1 to eat my eggs...arggggg

FrenchToast..... As far as dusting powder I bought the big bucket at fleet tonight, I will try the nylon thing I was wondering how to not use so much. great idea with the stocking, I will be doing everyone in the am except the couple already done..... I have had my birds since March and they have been in the coop in the barn since June, the sparrows have been here since I got my horses and opened up a wall for the stall so they can come and go as they please so since at least 2003...... why all of a sudden now in winter did I get the mites? Makes me think something else is also going on.. over the summer I used sand in my coop with DE, but in late Oct. I added 6 inches of sawdust to help keep it warmer for the birds over winter, wonder if that isn't half the problem? The other thing is I have been having a terrible time getting decent hay this winter for the horses and I found some grass hay in Waupaca that seemed ok in his dark barn, but after seeing it in the light you could tell chickens or pigeons or some feathered critters were hanging out in his barn doing there thing above the stored hay..... so maybe that is where they came from, I'm so mad i could scream I feel terrible for my poor chickies........Ty for posting that info, and I hope your wrong about them coming back I will scream double if that happens......Kim
