So, my broody Bantam Cochin went broody again... I love this! 8 silkie daddy eggs underneath her and one duck egg! Eggcited! I love chicken Math!

Alright folks, many of you know that I work as a Pastor for my career, but also work as a Youth Counselor at a residential facility to pay the bills. Well the teachers in my school heard I loved chickens and decided to hatch out some chickens next month. They bought a LG Circulated Hovabator... Now I need to find 40 eggs to fill it with. We have a mixed flock, but I was hoping to surprise them with some interesting birds... So I am looking for a half dozen naked necks, grouse, bantams, cochins, anything you would consider "odd" or "fun".

Good evening! waiting for the fam to get back from "working out" wish they would just help me instead! So AngieB--I have been wondering the same thing.., I have been finding 3 green eggs in my coop! Also there is one in a nest in the barn. I am thinking that all the green/blue egg layers are penned up! I have several "tophat" girls in my coop too...maybe it is them? I looked really carefully today to see if I could see an EE type--NOTHING! The only ones that I thought might be are roos...I doubt they are laying eggs! So that brings me back to the top hats. Mine are from a mixed flock I bought 2 years ago...no idea what they are mixed with now; although I do have an Auracana Roo that has a little "hang down" tail...I wonder if that is were the gene is coming from? Does anyone know how much influence the roo has on egg color? THis is the only way I can think that I am getting blue and green eggs in my coop flock!

Just had a taste of my heartshaped sweet potato biscuits--MMMM, it is a hit! We are having then with the pork fried rice that I couldnt make last night due to DD25 not realizing that I was cooking! Evidently, since I was in the barn when she got home (and she didnt see all the stuff I had already prepared) she thought I wasnt cooking so she started making stuff....so we will have mine tonight...sh!t, I wanted to go OUT!!! Oh well, I guess this will have to do:

And dd25 just got home and brought me mini daffs that I can plant into the garden with the mini irises I bought earlier! I am excited for my miniature garden! You all know how much I love miniature stuff!

TO-eating out on V-Day is so over rated. Wait a day or two. Restaurants are less crowed and you can get into your favorite ones! Plus the guilt factor works really well! Although I shouldn't speak, dh took me out to eat tonight...went to Culvers....LOL!!! I was too hungry to cook plus I asked if we could go there!
Love the roses and congrats on the additions to your mini flower garden!

Raim- Don't think those radar ranges ever were very safe! LOL!! Now with my pacemaker being all pace makerie, I'd never turn one on. The new pacers can withstand microwaves so long as you don't stand and look at your food cook. At least I can still be in kitchen when the micro is on.
Your dinner sounds devine! I'd invite myself over but I'm not your mom!! LOL!!!

Ken-good luck getting some "fun eggs". I wish I had some to send you but I don't have a rooster thank goodness! (And no FT! I don't need one to "show up" mysteriously on my door step either! I'm sure they are all quite happy on your Rooster Rescue Ranch!)

DH loved his seafood buffet! I made the shrimp and scallops scampi style, and steamed the mussels in a fresh tomato, scallion, garlic, wine sauce. He ran out to our local butcher shop and picked up 2 giant T-bone steaks for me; grilled them to perfection too! Topped off with the Lemon Meringue pie (or the Apple): scrumptious!!! Since he had the grill going he also cooked up some burgers for the kids..... The boys at work are going to be sooooooooo jealous when I open up my lunch tomorrow!

TO to see the internal pip, I take the flashlight and candle at night, shining the light through the side of the air sac will let you see where the chick has pipped ( just keep turning the egg and look carefully for the moving shadow inside). Since they should pip externally within 48 hours of the internal pip then I will poke a hole if they have not done so.... then wait again another few hours and try to judge by the peeping of the chick how far I should go with zipping and so on.......

Bf4, your DH just forgot how to teach his girl swimmers where the target is........

Just watched my BFF's daughter in the sporting group. She didnt get called back but what a coup for being only a senior in HS! WOW! She got 3rd (I believe in juniors so got a scholarship for college...cant remember how much...gotta watch the terriers now! T

I take it you've never had them run amok in your flower gardens? They'll peck & scratch the heck out of them. But certain flowers/plants can be toxic to chickens.

Here is a link to list of toxic plants, but I don't know if I agree with everything they have listed. Some things, like elderberries, are listed, but my girls eat them. I think the word "toxic" is a little overused & not explained as well as it could be. Some consider any plant that causes an unwanted body response (diarrhea, gas, etc.) as having a toxicity, but unless the reaction was extreme, it is by no means life-threatening. They have cabbage listed also, and that I do know causes a nearly life-threatening response in my gastrointestinal tract. Just ask my DH.

Thanks so much CC, Yes they have gotten a bit into the garden a few times but I didn't know what flowers to watch out for. They tend to stay away from some of them on there own, must not taste to good.

Just saw your post KNAndrs...I have quail eggs. You would have to start them later though if you
want them to all hatch at the same time. Let me know!

I would keep the greenhouse floral arrangements away from the chickens. You have no idea what chemicals they have been treated with...... better to be safe than sorry IMHO......

Sisie I would definitely NOT feed the flowers to your girls! I have tortoises and the experts expressly say not to give them any purchased flowers until they have been growing at your own place and have produced new blooms. I would imagine that cut flowers have all sorts of stuff sprayed on them. I wouldnt want to risk it either.
