Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

TO: When you say you can't stomach the milk-you dont like it or it makes you sick? Did you know that a majority of people with celiac go on to develop a milk intolerance? I've been trying to minimize the amount my D12 drinks/eats (think ice cream) and substituting with other types of milk to hopefully ward this off as long as possible, if not indefintely! I can't imagine her life without ice cream.

wasn't it WKRP? (no A?) IN CINCINAAAAATTI! lol I BARELY remember that!

Welcome Joe! now we have 2 joe's! and 2 Amy's and 2?........ terri's........... theres more.

chickies are doing good this a.m. I had to totally help that last baby, probably my fault. it couldn't rotate. ?? anywho, I can't wait for them to start feathering, I've NEVER hatched a pure silkie. Lots of mixed Silkies, NEVER any with silkie feathering.

Yeah it was Raim..... This is Les Nessman reporting at the Turkey drop..... Oh the humanity!!!!! :D

Welcome Joe!!!!

Angie, there is sooooooo much research going on in the area of milk..... I have a daughter who can drink milk and not have any problems (she prefers the raw), but give her some cheese and she gets stomach pains etc..... my theory is that she is reacting to the casein since in cheeses the casein content is MUCH higher than in regular milk (NOBODY in the family is lactose intolerant). Of course different breeds of cows produce milk with different protein structures and then there is the option of goat's milk...... good luck!

Ok I better get my behind in gear or I will get a crappy parking spot. Later!

Morning all!
The dogs got me up at 6, why I don't know but I was awoken with much pestering and drama. I finally got out of bed and let the snots out. I guess the squirrels were in need of a good telling off?!?
So after two cups of strong coffee I'm ready for a nap.

The Girls were waiting for me at the door today. They wanted the coop door open..NOW!!

The rabbits were happy to have fresh water with out the ice and the babies have discovered the joys of carrots and bread.
The Cali is due next week and the Lucy is due the following week.

The little chicks are doing great. The Rhodies are having fun cruising the whole tank and the little Moderns are exploring in baby steps. Ben is pouting under the heat lamp. He likes having friends but is still thinking that they have cooties. Especially the Moderns. They perplex him. He sleeps near them but not touching. It's hilarious!
The Rhodies are kinda the school ground bullies. I think they are a few days older then the others. They are sure cute little round fuzz balls though. I just know they are roosters....all of them...except Ben...

TO-I just knew you were going to pounce all over those Moderns! LOL!! Honestly, as we were driving to get the chicks I told dh that if we ended up with Moderns, not to worry. TO would take them if we had to get rid of them. LOL!! We did not know what we were going to be able to come home with until we saw what Jordan had in Ben's age group.
Now I'm feeling all guilty! You have one lonely little chickie!

Welcome mazojoe and welcome to the Cheese Head Hot Sopt!

Ok, I have a bathroom to clean...yeah...
Laters!

My mom called me this morning all confused because she found a black egg today. I finally broke the news to her that her cayugas should all be laying eggs with a black coating on them. She's had them for years and all their eggs have been white. One of the mixed ones from last summer must have finally gotten it right.

Good morning! So Cayugas lay BLACK eggs? COOL! I didnt know that either...I guess that would shock someone used to getting a different color! I had much to say...but then got a PM from MLH.....guess who's getting a couple of modern games tomorrow?????

I am excited! There was no sound coming from the bator this morning...I was hoping to at least hear some peeping...they are not "really" due until today at 2 or so. I hope more hatch...but what is this he doing out on Saturday already? I sure hope my temp fluctuation didnt kill those wheaten eggs! It is very hard to hatch with a bator in this house because our night time temp is 10 to 15 degrees lower than day time!

So let's test my memory and see if I can remember what I was going to say....

still thinking....

yeah......

Aha! Welcome to another Joe! We did a horse show in Arena...cute little town. My SIL's parents live right near there too. If that is your place in your avatar it looks inviting. We all want to know what you have...so I will be the one to ask! ? Check out the bash thread...you dont want to miss that!

it is coming back to me slowly...no CC I did not get the Dom hens yet...Carol has them in quarantine at her place and last I heard, she had heard a sneeze...
(I think)
Jim--when will you know if Nora's breeding took? Will you be doing an x-ray to see how many pups or are you going with the "old fashioned way" of wait and see? Know anything about your geese yet? Are the babies really sebbies?

There was something else...BL4 and Angie about the Milk! YES! From what I have read the ends of the villi have the location that produces lactace to digest the lactose in milk; Since that is the first part to dull in Celiac, an intolerance of milk is a FIRST sign of the disease. As your heal you can generally begin to drink milk again! Milk always made me feel slightly ill even as a child, but I drank it because my Mom told me I "needed" it for strong bones....yeah, what the milk marketing board has drilled into our heads....Sooo, I really do not have a problem with milk, I like the taste, I love ice cream and cheese, but it is a mental thing with me. After reading that we are the ONLY species that drinks milk as adults and the only species that drinks another species' milk....yeah, it's a mental thing! Now when I worked at a dairy the farmer always encouraged us to take fresh milk right from the bulk tank. I think he knew that if we were planning on doing that we were more careful with the cleaning of the cows before milking! Thus resulting in a cleaner product in his tank. I only took milk home when the tank was empty when Deb and I started milking. Then I was sure none of the 3rd shift milk was in there...I really didnt trust those teens and what might have gotten into the tank. I LOVED to drink that milk! Especially right away cause it was about 36 degrees and almost froze your mouth! It also made the most delicious yogurt and cheese. So now I dont drink it any more. I do like the taste of almond milk though...it is great on cereal with none of the "mind games" for me!

So I cant remember too much else...maybe I got it all. Now I think I need some eggs and cheese curds for breakfast! MMMM--my new obsession! Talk at ya later...and as always; Have a fantastic day! Terri O

Well the appt. is warming up. Got everything in place and with the main door open it was 60* with a slight breeze blowin in. Have the door closed now to see how warm it gets. Might have to lower the heat lamp a little more. Boy are they going to be surprised! Think their going to like having more room and straw bedding. Sifted out a big pan of dirt for grit and dusting. MLH that's funny about Ben [not the top dog anymore]. The PR is looking better today

haven't seen her drink or eat but she comes out and stands in the sun. Maybe she caught Laura's cold. Gonna miss not having the chicks in the house, sort of.

I am back from the feed mill.. 6 50# bags of mill egg formula, $69.oo .. I am not going to start the Barred Rock hens on it for about a week from now.. they won't be laying eggs anyhow, and they are still not separated long enough from the Bl laced Red Wyand..

I think I might load up that odd-ball rooster and take it to Marlene.. she was going to come get it, but I want it gone ,, I need the pen it is in for my Delawares.. He is semi tamed down now.. the Barred rooster is way tamed down..

the peahens are way tamed down , too.. yesterday they were both sitting on the fence and I had to walk behind them to get to the guinea pen.. I actually brushed against their tails and they just sat still.. although none of my birds like being caught.. but if I do catch them, they are very calm..

I am going to go and try to figure out my photo situation.. my helper (DD#2) will not be coming here until Wednesday.. maybe I can figure something out on my own..

ETA
I used to help my friend milk his dad's cows .. we did it by hand with a bucket and a stool.. If a cow stuck her foot into the bucket, they never dumped that milk away.. it went through the strainer with the rest of the milk. BTW, nobody ever got sick or died from it.. that family had 13 kids.. the youngest one to die was about 70 years old.. 11 are still alive..

I do not drink cow's milk.. once I got used to goat milk, I could not tolerate that slimy cow milk..

Ok TO... ALL of my Marans in one classroom hatched! They aren't due until tomorrow around 2:30! Look like all BCM to me, but they are still wet looking. I didn't check the egg shells for how many came from the black//blues. That's 5 chicks in there. If you want to drive here and get a couple, you're welcome too... :D

In the other classroom I have the 3 lavender Orps and 2 Marans. One of the Marans hatched and it is Very light silvery/white. I think that would be called a splash? At first I was thinking it was a LO, but nope. I think the LOs will be the last to hatch because I SO want them to! The wait is killing me!!!

Anyhow...I have 6 new chicks today! It is a GREAT day!::D
