Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Early good morning everyone,

FT perfect example of "small world" during the '90s I worked for a propane company here, North Star was a customer,,,that driveway was and is a nightmare. Star Lake is one of the highest elevation lakes in the state,,,,and the top of that hill might be the second highest elevation in the state LOL,,,sry but been there done that,,,not fun (let alone those stairs)

Now for the best part,,,,Bill the owner(great guy), is the fellow that I got my heritage chickens from, he's a breeder and keeps 40-60 year round. His BCM's are an excellent flock from Bev D lines,,,his latest project are Black Langshans, I'm getting either eggs or some chicks again from him soon, I missed his BCM pullets last fall and he offered to fix me up late winter.

I'm starting to get the hang of chicken math as I just typed that info,,,

He does use his fresh eggs in the kitchen,,,they also make their own maple syrup and grow blueberrys,,the Sunday breakfast is amazing!!!

that made me hungry,,,bbl need to forage some breakfast here

Good Morning Everybody! I remember thinking when i took the chains off the tractor, this will make it snow! So I'm putting the bucket back on today. FT thanks for the reminder of why we eat at home.

I started stuffin our own blunts with a machine $1.35 a pack, you learn to like em. Sure made a huge diffence in our budget. Didn't get any eggs yesterday so should get at least 3 today. Forgot to mention that 2 of the chicks don't have tails. Cochins? TO? Better get movin!

Morning all!
Beautiful day so far. I'm not to thrilled with the little pathway to my coop. The snow came, it warmed up and now I have a thick path if ice. Yuck. I'll have to get a huge bag of salt and get to work. Yuck....Other then that it's all good here!

Ang-I lived in So Cal in Ventura County. I started out in Agoura as a wee baby then we moved to a small tonn outside of Rochester, NY. Eventually we moved back to Ca and we lived in Ventura County again in Newbury Park. Got married and lived in Santa Paula. Lost the house to bankruptsy (best thing to ever happen) and we moved to Nasahville TN-I loved TN!. A few years later we ended up in WI. I love love love WI. It reminds me of living in NY. I am sooooooooo glad I am out of CA. I don't know how my family can still live in that state. I think my borther would leave but my SIL won't leave her family. At least they are in a relatively decent school district.
Were did you live?

Elaine-That is interesting to know about the Dane Co Humane Soc .It so does not surprise me. I talked to the Rock County HS at my local Mounds. The nice volunteer told me that Dane HS has a ton of money so they are a lot harder to adopt from.

DrH: This is for you! He He he......Why you never get a "free" a kitten from a Chicken Swap LOL!!....they are worthless ans lazy:

And for those of you who have not had enough Baby Chick viewage:

The one right out front is Ben. These are the Gold Stars that are going to the seminar tomorrow. They have been good babies and I will miss this crew.

Hey Elaine, congrats on the pup! My in-laws had a Australian cattle dog (blue heeler)/black lab mix for 17 years. He was the best dang dog they ever had, easy to train and smart as a whip. That stinker would sneak into the chicken coop for egg snacks during the day. He would take the egg out to the driveway and toss it around on the gravel until it split or cracked. Just one of his many tricks!

Hey, thanks! Yes this pup is smart as a whip, too! She's a handful but all is well so far. Thanks for the tips on the egg eating - hopefully that won't happen here - she's too big to get into my coop/chicken entrance -- but she may decide to go after the duck eggs. Only time will tell.

(Thanks for the pictures - boy that cat looks like it's having a great day!) Re: Humane society - so I went and reread the little newspaper blurb and the $3,000 coop is heated but doesn't have a run yet. And yet, get this: "Most chickens at the shelter are housed in dog kennels and taken outside occasionally in caged dog runs. As with dogs, the Humane Society provides chickens with "enrichment" - usually a ball with a hole in it stuffed with Cheerios or oatmeal to dig out - to calm them and keep them busy.

"We started it with a couple of roosters and now we do it with all our chickens" Halat said. "If they were outside they'd e busy digging and scratching, not just sitting on newspaper."

As the Humane Society raises money to build an outdoor pen to attach to its chicken coop, it also hopes to increase the number of households on its waiting list to adopt chickens." Wisconsin State Journal, 2/26/12, p. A9.

So let me get this straight, they spent $3,000 on a heated coop but didn't build a run (ANOTHER FUNDRAISER?!!) and they are housing all the chickens and roosters in dog kennels?? WTH? Just slap me up along side the head! Oh yeah, and I checked their fees on chickens - it just says "varies" but check out these prices on the dogs they offer for adoption. This is what part of what makes me nuts.

Dogs

Adult dogs (6 months or older) $175
Dog buddies (2 adults dogs or a bonded pair)
$250
Puppy (up to 6 months)
$250
Adoption Guarantee Fund* adult dog
$275
Adoption Guarantee Fund* puppy
$350
Adoption fees include:
  • Spay or neuter surgery
  • Distemper, Parvovirus, Rabies (when age appropriate), and Bordatella (kennel cough) vaccinations
  • Microchip
  • Flea and tick treatment
  • Parvovirus test for puppies
  • Heartworm test for adult dogs
  • Additional vaccines and veterinary care as need
*Adoption Guarantee Fund dogs are highly desirable and therefore have a higher adoption fee. The extra fee goes to build the Adoption Guarantee Fund, enabling DCHS to continue efforts in finding homes for every healthy, available animal in Dane County.

I am all for their recouping their costs but I find their fees to be offensive. We bought two rabbits from them years ago and that will be our last animal adoption with them. I will shop @ their thrift store to save some $ and to support them that way but that's it. Anyhow, thanks for letting me rant!

I must get to it before another day escapes me!
Have a good one, folks!
Elaine

P.S. I lived in San Diego about 20 years and moved here 12 years ago to raise our boy closer to family - most of my family is in the Galena, IL area. I miss the ocean, my friends and my paycheck -- but that's about it!

Morning everyone, newbie here...off to pick up soil to start my WS. ordering tires for the car and collecting information for my town board meeting next week so I can have some chickens. I tell my friends that I can't have chickens because I'm residential...they all look at me as if I'm demented because I live in the country.

Maybe bring pictures of your "residential" neighborhood !!! If they deny you then they are "nuts" !!

MLH ?AWWWWW!!!!! I still maintain that whoever said it's a dogs life never had a cat. Chixchix good luck on getting your chickens sounds to me that it shouldn't be a problem if you explain your settings. Got most of work done already. Checked the NOAA report 5-8 here maybe. Better get that bucket on just in case. It's been revamped to fit the Fiord and whoever did it didn't did it very well. The holes don't line up so very good.

Good morning! Nice blue sky when I woke up...then it went grey and now seems that the sun wants to come back out! I hope so...it is bright anyhow! Got a call this morning form a lawyer in Chicago...we are meeting tomorrow; seems someone dropped a bantam Cochin Roo in his yard with his hens! So he is coming to my house to live--maybe. I will post a pic after I get him. I have one Cochin LF DrH...if those birds hatched out of the eggs marked HO or DH (depending on how you looked at it) then the father would be him. IF they were marked with a C then the father could be the Araucana roo...but he doesnt get much "action!"

Today I am going to make a little roost for the chicks in the TV. And I have to shovel out this house a bit. The path is getting too skinny. Well, maybe it's not THAT bad but close. My useless cats just broke the top of the chick TV! They like to lay on top and I guess 3 was just too heavy for the plastic framed screen! Not they have a sheetcake pan on top...and another cat just went in there! I think they miss "their" incubator! Now that I put the chicks on shavings they are messing the water up! I have t find a taller thing for it to sit on I guess.

Well--like Elaine says...I better get moving before this day slips away too...there is definitely that danger once I get on the computer...and FT I DO NOT have the longest posts!

THere--I feel better now!
