Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good late night! Went to TSC tonight with my friend....nope--no chicks yet! Not that I would need any but it is fun to look. Got horse wormer, goat minerals and a salt block. Oh yeah a chick waterer and a feeder for april 1st.
I am tired, goint to get some hay tomorrow and then hopefully riding with WiChCh on Wednesday....we might be riding in SHORTS!
Tiki--that is disturbing about your landlords. No one should be afraidin their own house...even if it is owned by someone else!
Tommy is trying too figyre out how to get some of my beer out of the bottle. He's not doing great figuring it out! LOL--silly bird.
Well, the cats are knocking stuff off of the counter so I am going to clean it up and then ff to bed with me! I got a new down pillow at Kohl's tonight with my free $40 certificate...I think I might sleep in tomorrow!
Sweet dreams! Terri O

(PS) anybody going to the Beaver Dam swap on Sunday?

Oh.... Quickly... 3 yr old Buff Orpmneeds a home... Saw it on Madison Craigslist under pets. Lcated in windsor may be? Hername is Ellie. WCC.. Where are you? There's a chicken in need!

Hi all!

I stink, my hair looks oily/dirty, and I'm tired of going pee between the coop and the garden! Thank goodness there is no one in that house! Well, DS#2 came over to look at the mess and yep, looks like we have to call in the pros.
barnie.gif
That's not going to be cheap! DH was going to take Tue. off anyway (too many hours at work) so it's his problem. It also means another project gets put off until that's paid for

But then, I remind myself we're still happier here than any other place we lived!

Mazo... congrats on the fuzzy butts!

raim.... rant away! I would be pi**ed too! Had 2 close calls today ourselves! The neighbor came over this morning all excited... apparently sweet little Isis (the almost kitten) tried to get to the birdhouse attached to the pole of the kennel! Well, she slipped off of it and landed in the kennel! That dog is kenneled for a reason! Good thing Rick saw it happen and got there in time to get her OUT of his MOUTH! She's OK but a couple seconds later she would have been dead! Then this afternoon when my son came he brought his 6mo. old puppy who grabbed one of the roosters wings.... he's OK too. Wish it could have worked that way for your call hen... so sorry about her.

tiki.... Looks like a nice set-up... too bad about the landlord and neighbor! When I was a kid we had a "help yourself" neighbor.... but at least he just went in our barn not the house. (We think)

Welcome to all the newbies!!!

Rudy (the dog) thought it was real nifty to to have my son's dog over... he got to play and run with her which we old fogies
old.gif
don't do enough with him. He and Boo and my grand son were running around and around and around the flower bed! It was so funny!
lau.gif
couldn't tell who was in the lead! Then Rudy changed direction and mess everyone up... that was funny too! The chickens were not happy with an extra dog around (especially the roo) but they had the yard most of the day so it was okay.

Guess it's time to make the girls their mash and go to bed.
Night all!

Oh... the tick got away because it crawled of the cat onto me... I grabbed it and lost it trying to get into the alcohol. It was very small so it may have been a male. Haven't found it yet.

Welcome to all the new people, I am relatively new too. I use to be a lurker, but finally decided to sit towards the front row and ask questions, instead of the back row where im most comfortable! this place is a wealth of information if you remember to weed through some of the BS ( no names mentioned).

Apyl- no more pictures of duck, im getting sucked in and I'm almost positive they do not count in chicken math! LOL although I even showed the pic to DGF and she said no, dont you have enough right now! If she only knew! (insert evil laugh)

lol Luckily my DH lets me do what I want. But he was like "Ok, how many birds are we gonna have" lol But really I think he likes them he was all checking them out when he got home.

good morning folks, hi to the newbies!

well I'm getting the hang of the chicken math I think,,,let's see I have 27 eggs in the bator so none of those count (right?)

I bought 16 chicks last night from my friend Bill same fellow I got my original heritage birds from last Oct, these should be interesting. These are all Maren's Wheaton, Blue, and Birchen roosters (all direct from Bev D eggs a year or so ago) over his BCM that came to him as 2nd generation Bev D chicks from a WI breeder a few years ago. These should produce a variety of "types" but all should lay some of the famous dark eggs. His BCM's lay very large very dark eggs (got some last fall)
SO,,,since we have no idea how many rooster's may be in this bunch at this point,,,my guess would be that none of these count either (?)

I might be wrong on this math and I didn't search for that post explaining it so well from a couple weeks ago, please feel free to correct any of my errors,,heh heh

Amy, we did discuss the Blk Langshans, his plan is like mine,,to breed them with our BCM roo's to get a darker, hopefully bigger egg layer. If you check that is a back cross of sorts since the Blk Langshan was a part of the original mix for BCM, I actually have some of these eggs in my 1st bator batch

Jim, I sent my addy and #, I'll call you this morning later, knowing you sleep in

Good Morning Everyone ! WELCOME to all the new people!

CC sure hope you get that pump running and damage is minimal! You know my experiences
hide.gif
Same with you Cind that's miserable! tiki I always try to wait to commit to a deal and once again a monkey has been thrown into the wrench. Good neighbor Donny called me yesterday and wants me to bate some of his eggs. Sooo I guess I'm backing out of or arrangement. God I hate that! Hope you can find someone that will take them. Actually now that I think of you probably won't be saving hatching eggs quite yet. That would drive me nuts about the landlord and the neighbor. You have rights as a renter! Tell your neighbor to stay the HE!! out of your house or he'll be arrested for trespassing! As for the landlord get a copy of renters rights but sounds like you need to move! P.S. change the lock! So many other things but as always their gone. Lots to do again today. It's gettin pretty crowded in the appt. I NEED ANOTHER COOP! Propped the door open to get the chippy out of the porch yesterday. Had insulation stuffed around the sump hose hole looks like I'll have to put some wire around it. Sounds like I'll have to put the AC in tomorrow. Bigz I keep forgetting to ask how's your eyesight now? Thinking the next couple of days I'm gonna pull the garden fencing and posts for plowing and disc-ing. mazo it really irritates me but my elec bill fluctuates by $30 and nothings changed. Tried to see how much juice the bator and heat lamps cost me to run. They say it's all about when they read the meter. BS it's always within a couple of days.

Better get movin!

Good Morning !! Finally its just me and my youngest here at the house. I have a day full of cleaning today. I want to really want to get it all done today so tomorrow i can spend the day outside. DH doesnt know it yet but I'm building a deck tomorrow. When I was pulling plywood off our colapsed shed/house I uncovered a stack of perfect wood for a deck, it was inside the building when it colapsed. So I" figured I better do something with it before it gets all weathered and warped. Then when DH gets home we'll work on putting the fence up. The chicks are getting so big. I wish it was warmer at night so I could leave the chics outside. They really liked being in the coop and I got the hay yestarday and its all layed out.

About when could I start leaving the chicks outside overnight in the coop, I would put the lamp out there with them? I was thinkning around 4 weeks old .

Good morning! We are all up earlier today...stuff to do...maybe just getting used to the time change? Thought I'd post early in this half hour before I have to leave.Must not have had enough coffee though...my fingers dont want to type the right letters.

Apyl--you can let them out there as soon as they are fully feathered. Especially if you are putting their light with them. DrH are you trying to say that you dont have the room for a couple of extra eggs in that incubator??? Aw come n Donny doesnt need 'em YOU do!
love.gif
I hear ya about the electric bill...I think they are running a racket. Mine changes $50 to $75 a month! It was higher even when I turned the heaters OFF! I dont get it. It really did go up though when all the kids were here over Christmas...All those computers? Who knows...

Well--guess it's time for me to go and load up some hay! Fun fun!
Have a fantastic day and get out and have some sun! Terri O

I'm desperately hoping my kids get my husband's teeth, never had braces and has perfect teeth. We have 4 also, 7 years between my oldest and youngest....we've got some expensive years ahead!
My kids have spring break this week so they've pretty much spent every spare second watching the chicks :) should have done this sooner! Our kitty has also spent every spare second watching them, I've decided for their safety they'll be moved to the basement when we're not home and at night. Kitty is a hunter with all her claws, don't want her trying to take a swipe though the cage bars!

Morning all!

Man a lot was posted to I though I'd better open another window and chat as I read.

Welcome to DD12 and EL!! This is a great group of peeps here!

DD12-I have my brooder in the house. I use a 75 gallon aquarium and then onto the three season porch before they go outside. You can brood in your basement as long as you can keep then warm and no drafts are on them and the garage is fine too, again as long as you can keep then warm and there are no drafts. You can always start them in the house for the first 5-7 days then once they are more sturdy, move them to a more suitable location. Chicks are dusty and that fine feather dust sticks to everything that is not red hot or nailed down!!
I think up to two weeks of age might be ok to introduce new chicks, but it can depend on the breed and or the chicks themselves so you might want to have another brooder handy.

Aply-Super cute ducklings!!! I love Cayuga's. They are stunning when they are adults.

NJ-You are going about it all the wrong way! There are two ways to get what you want: 1) Work on the premise that it is better to beg for forgiveness the ask for permission. 2) Find out what breeds your DGF likes and then get her some of those breeds as her "own". This way she will feels involved and will never notice more chickens being added into the flock because she will by then be in love with chickens!

BF4-I had what your youngest DD has-impacted teeth. I had to have oral surgery twice to correct the problem. Mine had to be dragged to the correct location, pulled down, then turned around since they were backwards. Took 2 1/2 years total but was so worth it. Back then I wanted to die from the pain-read agony- but now I'm very happy it was done! Honestly, if it was not so important to have had it done. I think my Mom would not have done anything done to fix my teeth.

CC-Sorry to hear about your sump.

Cind-Glad to hear that the cat and roo are ok! Yikes! Good thing people were around to "save" them!

Unk-Yep! Eggs don't count and roosters don't count in chicken math! Your on the right track!! LOL!!

Well, I think that was it. I should add some cuteness to these pages and take pics of the new fuzz butts in the brooder....Those little Ameruacanas are dang cute! The little one I was worried about seems way better and in fact I can no longer tell her for the other ones. The loudest so far has been a little PR. She is tiny! I've been keeping an eye on her. The meaties are so funny. Gorge themselves then walk about two little steps then pass out. One passed out in the food dish.

.

Well, Tiny Peep is peeping again so I'd better go check on her and get my day started.
