CC thanks, I love showing off my birds. The reason I ask about the bedding is that over the years we have had some pine shavings that have an overpowering smell to them. It doesn't seem to bother the adults too much. But the chicks can't tolerate it. It could also be mold in the food or bedding. And for those of you who only like puppies all I have to say is this

Bigfam4me Wish I knew what to say. Could be cocci. Even if you are feeding medicated feed you can still give them the corrid medication.
The amount in the food is not enough to cure the cocci if that is what it is. It just helps to prevent it but doesn't always work.

Make sure the bedding stays nice an dry. I've had losses in the past from what I'm thinking was mold. I use flower pot saucers turned upside down to set my waterers on and one time I lifted it up to change their water and the chicks started picking at the wet bedding. Not to long after that I lost some chicks. I'm thinking it was mold. Even if you can't see it, it may still be there.

If that is the case I don't know what would work.

Do you have any ornabac or probiotics you can put in their food or water?

Sending little chickie prayers your way for the little ones.

I went to get feed today but didn't call in my order so they only had 300 lbs. Not my usual 900 or 1000.
Anyway I showed them the bag I got from Magee's (Bigzio's feed store) and they said they probably can't make it that cheap because Magee's is close to Clintonville and they probably don't have to have their corn trucked in like my feed store does.

I started calling around again yesterday for prices on duck feed and Magee's is only $10.50 a bag !!! He has to order it !!!! Holy cow. Sure wish he was closer. He won't get it in until next week. Don't know if my 300lbs will last that long.....

Decisions decisions !!! So Yes Bigz, sorry I forgot to tell you, my birds liked it and my lave orp that was laying thin shells and at one time no shelled eggs is laying beautifully now.

I finally got ahold of the teacher who hatched out some of my eggs in her classroom. Out of 36 eggs she only got one to hatch !!! A black chick that I think is a pure Ameraucana !!
She said there were about 4 others that pipped but never hatched. She could hear them peeping but knew not to interfere !!! Well, I would say after 24 hours you can step in. Poor chickies !!

I'm bringing her another 3 dozen next week since I still have to hatch out chicks for my farrier.

The little chick got lonely and I guess today jumped out of the tub and out into the hallway. The stairway was right outside of the classroom and another teacher heard the chirping getting louder and louder. She found it 3 steps down !!! Guys the little one knew I was coming for it today !!! It is now safe and sound with my other chicks the same age !!

Ok, gotto go find the black jelly beans I bought before DH eats them all !!!

I have read all the symptoms and what it could be and only one that comes close is botulism. WHAT?!

The only common thread to last weeks chick death (same exact symptoms) was the feeder and waterer. I removed thos, replaced with little chick ones.

I can clen out he brooder omorrow. Ill use beach water to sanitize...

Gotta go... Sleep typing here...!

Up with the youngest, he was just pitching such a big fit, I was getting scared and was getting ready to put him in the car and take him to the emergency room. Tried putting him in his bouncy chair as a last resort and he shut right up. But now he just keeps staring at me with those big blue eyes.

It's gonna be a long night, and an even longer day at work tmw. Siiigh. Anyone else up?

I am still up.. went to play cards.. game stretched out pretty long.. but we had a good group and lots of talking and joking..

The pups are purebred Maremme . somebody asked..

the last quail is hatched and so are the two turkeys..

I am up to 469 eggs in the baters.. I just set 86 guineas last night/tonight.. Annie was checking our books from two years ago. we sold over 600 guineas..

be careful that you don't over medicate those young chicks.. Sulmet is very strong stuff.. I hate looking up chicken malidies, there are so many of them and so many of them have such similar symptoms..

Yes, I am looking for a GOOD barred rock rooster.. He does not have to be show quality, but he must at least look like a barred rock.. last year I had four great ones, but I did not want to feed them all winter, so I just kept the best one.. I took a gamble and lost that round.. this guy I have now is more black, than black and white.. I am hoping this next batch of chicks has less black legs than what I have been getting.. they are due to start hatching on the 18th.. (today) 36 BR eggs are in the hatcher..

pictures of the pups would not be too clear at this time.. they are the same color and about the same size as Nora's hind legs.. It is even hard to count them without mistaking a leg for a pup.. maybe tomorrow she will move away from them for a bit.. I will keep the camera handy..

DD#2 will be coming here tomorrow, and I can get her to help me post a picture.. they are not cute yet.. just wait a couple of weeks.. these are some large puppies,, each one must weigh at least a pound at birth..

Hi All! (again)

Bf4m.... wow that sucks! Hope can save most of them!

DrH--sorry about Brownie...I sure wish they made those PRs so they would last longer; they are very sweet birds!
Great job on the pups Jim and Nora! CInd, I think you are like me; the oddball chickens just seem to find us! I like the idea of the "Rooster of the Month Club!"
Someone commented on the buck goats being stinky. I guess they are a little but you must get used to it! I can only really smell mine in the fall.

Got up early today cause I had to send the shopping list for Friday's meal to the shopper. I hope she doesnt mess up...I am making eggs benedict, asparagus and fruit salad. I have to see if I can find an easy way to make 15 poached eggs....and get them on the muffins without it all gettin gcold before I get them served!

Gotta run...lots to get accomplished today!
Have a good one! Terri O

Just took the turner out and candled. 10 clears out of 36. Called Donny to ask if he had chick feed yet. Nope! Told him he'd better get on it he was gonna have babies soon! Asked if he had built a brooder yet? Nope! Now he's gonna borrow mine like I had told him to do in the first place along with a waterers and feeders.
