Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Ok I want to thank Gina for the offer for the Barred rock chickens , but with the ride up and wanting a variety and chicks I decide to order from Abendroths hatchery. I faxed over an order for 2 barred rocks, 1 silver wyandottee, and 1 black austrolorp, I like the city sc hool mix I am getting

. I wish they did a online thing for ordering but I assume they are just a smaller hatchery , it was the whole fax and wonder if they received it lol, but it is nice to be able to go pick them up .

Good afternoon---man am I tired after getting through all the posts! It is so crappy ourside too so that doesnt help...
Amy you are too young for CRS that's why you dont know what it means! LOL--it means "cant remember sh!t." (or stuff I guess ;) )
I had so much to say and now...CRS! LOL--doesnt help that I am so tired. I think I am going to take a nap, then pick up my feed order, then make anniversary and birthday cards for my Mom!
Yup, definitely need that nap first!
Sweet dreams--Terri O

So my DGF is apparently very serious about wanting 2 ducks. Of course I say 4, 1 drake and 2 hens so we can hatch, but she just wants 2 hens. So I need some thoughts and ideas.

1. what are the best pet ducks
2. can they be kept with chickens.
3. do they need a water source inside their run if they are let out to free range. I would have a kiddie pool or something like that set near the run. and yes I would have drinking water in the run.
3 what feed do they need? gamebird feed or something like that?
4.anything else you might want tell me would be great!

Going to go play some pinball today, I know random, but I am excited!

IMHO I'd say get at least 3 so if one crosses over the rainbow bridge it will still have a friend. So why not get a drake for the hens? You don't have to hatch and the ducks are going to lay anyway !!! Then you will always have the option.
I have Runners, calls, mallards, rouens and muscoys. Runners are definately not calm ducks but I love my runners. I would say not a good choice for pets.
My 1 mallard and 2 rouens are penned with the runners so are more flighty then they would be normally I think just because they are in with them.

My muscovies are very calm and they are very quiet. They are a much bigger duck then the mallards, calls and others but would be nice pets.
The calls are adorable if I must say so myself. I just picked up duck grower to feed the ducks and geese. I bought the Prince brand because my usual feed store that carries Nutrena didn't have a duck grower.
Ducks need access to fresh water at all times. They need it to be deep enough for them to get their nostrils down below the water surface level to keep them from getting clogged with food.

I agree with MLH, they are MESSY with a CAPITOL M !! I have 5 mallard ducklings in a Duckling TV and PU. I also have 22 babie Runners I just hatched and boy can they go through the water !!!!
I don't know anything else about the Australian Spotted ducks or the Pekin ducks. Good luck with your decision. You will end up with more then 2 guaranteed !!!

Mazo, you going to be at the Bash? I have my Calls sitting on some 20+ eggs right now...... they are very sweet ducks and a great source of entertainment! We have a kiddie pool for them to play in and for their water they have a large poultry waterer. With ducks, they need to be able to cleanse their nostrils so they need water deep enough to do that. I also keep a heated dog water dish with them so they have a 'hot tub' to play in during the winter.

I feed mine duck crumbles and for extras mealworms, minnows, veggie scraps, watermelon rinds, earthworms, grubs, and cracked corn in the winter.

Call duck WILL FLY! They need to have their wings clipped at each molt so they stick around. The females are LOUD! The ones I have are on the very quiet side for calls, FT can let you know what the loud ones sound like.....

I better get my nap in before my house is overrun with teenagers.

Yep the little ducks (the hens are loud) but not nearly as loud as my guineas so I don't think they are loud at all. But for someone without guineas I'll bet you would think they were loud.
I would say you definately want a covered pen for calls. One, because they can fly (if you forget to clip their wings and Two being so small I would think they would ba the perfect target for Predators. I just brought home another black plastic pond for all of my ducks. They are going to love it. They will think they died and went to heaven !!!
Picking up another one next week for them. All these different breeds means if I want to breed them to sell eggs they have to be kept separated. That means more ponds !!! Dos this maddness ever end ???

I'm new to the call ducks and Muscovy ducks so I really can't give advice as far as being good for being around children. I'm sure others's will chime in soon !!

Afternoon All...jennie is here to help post a few pics for me. Thanks for the good wishes sent LIL Boy's way...he is feeling better, but has a awful open wound that is draining and hopefully heals well.

I know some nice pics have already been posted for the wild leeks so i'll post just one growing and one with the harvested leeks ready to have their roots snipped off.

Here is a pic of Rick's double that master caller bigz placed in his lap
Followed by a pic by a pic of ugly me and my harvest.
