Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good morning,    looks like the frost did not get the blackberry blossoms.. I doubt if we even had frost..  a bit cloudy, but no rain..'

I took my car to my friends repair shop to get the brake lights fixed..  after two new aftermarket  switches failed to work, we put the old one back in..  not working yet, have to go back today.. He is going to pick one up at an auto salvage yard..  that last tornado took a tree down just 8 feet from his shop. then it went across a 19 acre field and you can see where it tore into the woods..

baiting laws are set by the state.. counties can not lessen the restrictions, but they can elaborate on them..  technically, it is illegal to feed deer in your feeders..  people get around this by "feeding the birds"..

If we are going to hunt on equal terms,  then no guns should be allowed..  or bow and arrow ?
It's just all about what degree of advantage we want to use..  I never baited, but I am not dead set against it, either..  I never turned down venison just because the guy giving it to me baited..
A lot of guys say they would not bait,,  but I have seen them set up their stand as close to a corn field or hay field as they can get..

I guess I should uncover the tomatoes and keep the buckets close.. frost is predicted for tonight, again..

those news blurbs are meant to titilate people.. they give a couple of real facts, but the facts might not be connected in any way..  with as many people as there are in this country, it is just co incidence that some of them who bought chicks, also came down with some kind of illness..  and I would like to know who took the time to do the study about the correlation between the illness and the chicks.

chickens do not have a certain taste bud, (for lack of the clinical name),  that they are not affected by the "hot" in pepper..  I have fed my chicks cayanne pepper and they loved it..  so pepper is not the answer to egg eating chickens..

one more thing,, just for the record.. I was here before all those bears and deers..  Tta say you crack me up... unless you can show me one that is over 69 years old..

Jim... You crack me up! You post like a cranky old curmudgeon and then in person you're sweet and quiet! May be you have split personalities...?

I still think you are super sweet for giving me guineas for my bday. They are wild little things! Trying to sweeten them up with some worms now, otherwise they're lke popcorn. If you get one In your hands, they just pop pop POP right out and all over the place! I don't need them really tame, but don't want them super fearful either. Now if only I could bait some ticks... Then the guineas would LOVE me!

Think there's a law against tick baiting? ;)

Angie that story is very misleading... And I love the painting. I have so many projects and never seem to get to them.

Right now I need to focus on my veggie garden and a rummage sale I am doing in a few weeks.

I also want to do my own barn quilt for the chicken coop. I have a very artistic 13 year old neice who will be in town this summer... I might have to put her to work designing something... and maybe incorporate all the kids (mine and my sisters) handprints into the design. Need something to brighten up the coop. We painted it green so it would be discreet for the neighbors and blend with the trees. It has black metal big hinges and handles and a trellis as accents but needs something else to make it pretty. If I knew all my neighbors would not care, I would have made it barn red and white... oh well..next coop... hehe.

I wish I had a bigger coop because Carol has some fantastic birds. The full photo shoot we did yesterday was alot of fun. BF4M... did Carol ask you my scandalous question....

Vicki, BF4u, and Kristip: Thanks for the encouragement-this "lemongrass green" color was making me very nervous but love how it turned out. I will try and take a pic of the colors in the living room area later....hoping there arent too many colors together. A friend that went to school for Interior Design picked the colors out.
So much to do still...shower and then heading to Hudson for some last minute errands.....

Awwww, such a shame. What a waste of a beautiful animal. Yep, I'm one of those. When we have problems with the "neighbors" (deer, bears, coyotes, wolves, cougars~we have them all and even an occasional moose passing thru) I just remind people that we moved into THEIR neighborhood, they didn't move into mine. Hubby and I do our best to just dwell in peace with all our neighbors, whether they be 2 foot or 4. Besides, Bobcats are incredible rodent control specialists!

Did anyone catch the news report on the national news this morning? Would have been easy to miss. All they said was "Hundreds of people have gotten sick with salmonella this spring from getting chicks from various hatcheries across the country". That was it, DUH

Oh, they did add a quick blurb about hand washing but made no connection about handling chicks, etc.

BTW~the paint work looks absolutely beautiful!!!!

Good morning folks,

let me apologize for expressing some of my ideas/opinions about the game laws and the DNR on this fun hobby board, didn't really belong here, I have been know to "stir the pot" but really didn't need to do it here, I do post on some of the hunting related sites and should stick with that,,,,,,,,,,

at the same time I do think Heather had a good idea concerning tick baiting,,,

today I was supposed to get another 24 BCM's from my local breeder,,,,,,,,well I ended up with 6 chicks,,,over the busy weekend his incubator spiked and he lost almost everything he had in that batch,,,,,,,,so,,,,,,6 chicks in a brooder tote waiting for some additions which hopefully will be hatching here on the 9th,,,,,18 Wheaton/Blue Wheaton Amaracanas from pea chick's line here on BYC these are some of the prettiest blue eggs and decent size from young hens

good cool working weather, need to light till a few areas in the big garden, plant my beans and for the first time I got temped yesterday at the feed store in Rhinelander that sells Olds Seeds,,,,,,,bought some Bodasious* sweet corn seed,,,not much but have never grown corn here for a variety of reasons, we'll see how it goes

making a swap for some raspberry plants, also never planted any here, need to prep that area and get out there to dig some starts

now time to go and check on a painting crew I have working at one of my clients,,,,then hit the field again

Good evening all. MLH it must have been something in the air today...I needed to plant my peas (not very many of the either) It took me until 2 o'clock to get them in the ground and I got nothing done after that! I made some delicious soup for dinner and chased dhickens around to get babies back to mamas; got my trap set for tonight...lost 2 ducklings I just put outside two days ago...probably a coon--I hope I get it tonight! There are way too many birds out there in pens!
Well I have this picture...I am wondering just HOW I will keep the heat in the incubator now?

Good for nothing DUCKS!!! The chickens knocked it down next to a duck nest and she just chewedit right up. Sure hope I can find another bottom on CL!
Went for a Horse ride before dinner...man I love my new horse! Well my daughters are home so I gotta talk to them...good night! Terri O
Wow that is one big bite of there hey? I know the feeling, the other day I saw a corner got chipped out of the top of one of mine. I folded up a sock and drapped it over the edge of the bator and then put the cover back on and it plugged the gap perfectly. It wasn't that big however. Bottoms should be easier to find and buy then tops though. Good Luck. I like Cinds idea. I was also toying with the idea of using that foam insulation in the can . Make a mold the best you can and fill it in. Maybe use greased glove and shape it ??? Just a thought in this crazy head of mine. Just checked the temp and humidity in that bator and it's holding fine. I think if I needed to add humidity I could just wet the sock from the outside too !!! They are all in lock down. Due to hatch tomorrow IF getting down to 71 degrees didn't kill some. There are 48 eggs in there so if I get half to hatch that will be enough for the farrier.

My only question is, if the bator was going to get unplugged why didn't it happen on the 90 degree days we had ????? Geez !!!

I think I'm going to go down to Magee's today instead of tomorrow. Then to Shawno to see if they have any pig food marked down. And try not to bring anything else home. At the rate my chicks were dropping for a while I don't want any more for a while..........

ETA TSC doesn't have any chicks, ducklings or goslings !!! Good thing. No pig food marked down either. oh well maybe next week when I go back.

Speaking of ticks (cause Jim can get under your skin at times !!!

) Heather I think you should go for it, tick bating that is !!! You'd make the News !!!!! And I'm sure you could get people to drop them off for you. Just put a barrel at the end of your driveway. Or you could raise your own. You have 5 boys right ? Just teach them not to scratch their itches !!!

Angiebubs, I should hire your friend to help me pick colors for my living room/dining room area. I wonder if that cat is still there. I'd love to let the kids poke at it a little bit. They may never get a chance to get that close to one again.

Ok.......drum roll........so of my 10 straight-run chicks, I had 3 hens and 7 cockerels (now in the freezer).

What I am wondering, from the community, is whether or not anyone (close) has healthy pullets of a quiet variety, dual breed. My pullets are 14 weeks old and I have 2 red star and 1 RIR.

I am looking at getting a few 10-14 week pullets in the following breeds: Wyandotte, Orpington, or Austrlorp. (Preferably one of each just out of curiosity)

PM me if you have anything available!
