Well it is with a sad heart I have bad news to share...
On Thursday, I had placed some eggs to toss (not sure how old they were) on a wood covered old water tank, that we keep feed buckets on so we can mix the chicken feeds... Friday I found them opened and cleaned out. I thought it might have been Joan's dog helping herself...
Today Joan was putting her geese away, and said "Did you know you had a carcass from one of your hens in here..."
I took a quick head count, and found that Houdini my Jaerhon cross, who was just at or over a year old, had been dragged off her nest, and pulled into the the goose stall, and mostly eaten, most likely by a coon.
I found the eggs, cold for at least a day probably since yesterday...I am vaguely hopeful, I put them under a broody.. which it turns out was a super stupid thing to do...
I brought home HER eggs and from the can lined with hay I hear a faint cheep cheep cheep... yes they are probably quite ready to hatch...


How do you make a "hatcher"?? I have the incubator FULL of eggs, and only a tiny space to put the eggs for lockdown....
ACK...I know.. I need to take them back and put them under the hen again... I'll do that in a few..
Sorta still want to try for Houdi's clutch though...

Happy Dad's Day once again! Hope all of you are having a great day. My DH took the day and made a batch of beer (Birthday Present) It is Stout--I wont be able to have any.

We are having grilled salmon for dinner (his fave) With baked potato, broccoli and broccoli-slaw. Lots ob broccoli but I had a package thawed from the other night when I didnt feel like cooking! Looks like it will be only us!

Posted some birds on CL today, moved some birds outside and set Cuckoo Marans and black Ameraucana eggs. While I was watering one of the Bobs got out. I was glad if hung around the quail cage until I got the net! NP catching it...I think they are not very bright? Easier to catch than a chick anyhow.
I also cleaned out the feed room part of the chicken coop and made some more roosting places in the layer coop. A lot of these birds will be moving in there this fall so I want to have enough space. I put up another 12 feet or so...maybe they will have enough now? LOL! Those darn turkeys have been roosting in there along with the chickens...they take up a LOT of space!

Guess I will go and feed the critters before dinner...have a great night everyone! Terri O

Vicky--I wish you would have said that about the feed bags just after the bash! I was saving a bunch for FT and when she didnt come I tossed them!

Awww Carol, so sorry to hear about Houdini.

I hope you can figure out your egg dilemma. Does Terri have any bator space for you? Anyone else close to you?

Cind, if Frenchie doesn't mind, you could send your feed bags to Vicki. I've been saving mine for FT & can give them to her the next time we go up north.

IF she ever finds the time to get around to making them, that is.

We got carols problem figured out.. Remember me mentioning my broody... Ell we are going to try to shove some of those peepers under my broody hen tomorrow and see if she will hatch them and that might break her brood. She is coming over early in the am and we will put them under Eggie my momma hen. This is her second broody... The first was last November..this is my wacky hen that thought winter was a good time to hatch. We will see what we can do. Yeah babies...don't tell dh I said that...

OK finally caught up with reading.. comments, yes, no,, maybe,, we'll see,

I was at the swap from 10:30 to way past four PM.. I talked to Dan and Sandi a long time sitting at the umbrella table.. No Vickie.. we asked every woman within ear shot if her name was Vickie.. There was one, but she was Wave's GD..

We had a fox grab a guinea right next to the yard while I was at the swap.. Of course, Annie had the dogs inside the house.. I hope that now she will leave the dogs outside.. she said that all 13 of the geese came running up onto the deck, even the baby one made it up four steps..

we were missing one of the peahens for a few days.. Annie found her in the middle of one of the thick raspberry patches on a nest.. I told her if she leaves the dogs outside, the peahen will prolly be OK...

some people came to look at the last puppy today.. from wisc rapids.. said that they might come back.. have to make up their minds between our pup and a border collie.. I don't expect to see them come back..

had a good ho-made ice cream cone in Elcho..

what kind of bags are y'awl collecting ? I have been tossing those plastic ones away.. Sort of a shame, but I don't have any use for them.. I will save them if those are the kind you are talking about..Cut down and turned inside out they could make a handy tote..
If you have a sewing machine, you could hem the top and slide a dowel in and make a handle.
and then slit down each end, you could even carry firewood with one..

I want to point out that we have gotten NO rain yet here. Madison was at .002 in the rain event the other day. I am terrible about watering anything because we have a stupid hose set up. But I'm going to have to break down tomorrow and water. I don't even have a sprinkler for a garden!

If you've gotten rain rain by you... Stop rubbing it in! You mean spirited b@st@rds!

ps.. Robin and I are going to put up a ticket booth charging for parking somewhere. She'd make a great attendant since she likes to sit around and relax a lot....
