I haven't had the air on since Sunday in the coop. But I will tell you, I had to run it more than you would think. Since my coop is 15 x 12, even with it running on high, set to 80 degrees, it would still be 85 in the coop! But it was still better than 105 outside. I had it running constantly whle it was on. It's a small one, and is just to take the worst edge off in there. That's all it does. But I'm still glad we got it. I bet if I ran it all the time the girls would actually be laying now, lazy snots...

I am surprised to say... The ducks are warming up a bit. Not over the top friendly, but have actually Walked towards me the last few days. But I have some chickens that come RUNNING from he shed when they hear me outside. That's a funny site!

Vicki-I'm sure you'll get a number of answers to your question. Each chicken keeper has their own way of introducing new birds to the flock so eventually you'll have your own way of do so too. I can tell you what I do and I can say it works for me. If you ever decide to buy birds to add into your flock, then you will want to make sure you quarentine before you add them into your exhisting flock.
Anyway, what I do is place a cage or pen in the main chicken yard/coop. The new birds go in there for a while so that all parties can get used to each other. Next, when it comes to for them to mingle together, I place more feeders and waterers out so there is less competition. Then, I make sure that the newbies will have places to hide and are able to get away from the established flock members. You will have some fighting as pecking orders are established and it may surprise you to find that some newbies to the flock are actually quite dominant.
I get all the extra food,water, and hide aways in place the day before I plan on letting everyone together. That night I let them out so the established flock wakes up with the new birds.
I keep a watchful eye on everyone for a few days to monitor injuries and such.

no kinks that I can see, IF you are attempting to feed the wildlife.. why are you shooing them towards the woods ?? I do everything to discourage mine from going into the woods.. with very little success ,, I might add..

That is because 30 feet south of the garden is Hwy W, 55mph. Fox food or car fodder, take your pick.

Perhaps the guins will just cruise the yard, and that is fine. I did make a temp pallet shelter in a garden corner for them, maybe I'll wait a few more days before putting them in. They're just a hair over 2 weeks. But that dog crate is getting gross.

Ken, wait to give a broody new chicks until nighttime. I have had mixed results, some are good moms, some off the babies.

My ducks have finally figured out where the pond is, and now I can't get them out unless they're hungry. Sure is entertaining to watch them dive, splash and act like hooligans.

that is what I planned on doing. Will be getting a couple BO pullets and 2 older hens soon. I remembered a friend I knew many years ago used to do it that way and my neighbor friend recently had trouble adding a new hen and one of her roos was attacking it so I told her to try this and it worked for well for her.

One question. How long do you usually quarantine?

I just checked the radar picture.. the rain coming is moving slowly, so we in it's path should get a good soaking.. It is just at chippewa falls now.. someone from cheeseheads is near there, right ?

I just came in from the garden.. I mounted the cultivators onto the tractor and made a few passes over where I tilled this AM.. the cultivators go deeper and faster than I can do with the tiller.. and yes, I had to spray the bees again..

If you are running the AC with a pop door or window open, then you will never keep up.. even a small unit should do one room that size.. just taking the humidity out of the air is a big improvement anyway..

Fish Fry Friday Everyone! Jim hope Annie made er home with the good precious Friday stuff....Me and Jennie had a great time today...some of the quality father/daughter stuff...she is always great to be around.
Back home had to do the watering first...inside and out...then set up the ouside fish cooker for ho-made fries and catfish along with some swai.....turned out delish....just can't get that girl to eat the slaw...what the heck!

Thought of you today Doc while I slid down a couple Point Special lagers at the show....love it when jennie drives.

Thanks for the kind words sent toward Camp....I've met so many great people through BYC and the bash....thanks for getting us going with the bash Doc....think you're to blame for all the blessings of new friends....even if you liked me better on the keyboard than face to face....

I must be losing it. I think I have had my oven on for about a week at 250*. Because that is the last time I remember using it and I finally 'noticed' it was on today. As if it wasn't hot enough in here!

I have never been this forgetful I am worried now.

If you have cats AND a touch top stove, you may be suffering from the same thing that we are! I claim that our cats are trying to kill us. They walk across the top of the oven while chasing each other and set the oven temp and frequently turn on the oven! We were awaken one night by the smoke alarm, a first floor full of smoke, and the oven set at 500 and on! The sad thing is only 1 of 5 people in the house heard it! My daughter came in to wake me up!
