Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I am thinking of entering a few birds in our fall show but don't expect to be winning anything too big. We have a lot of people who have been breeding and showing for 30-50 some years. Duane Urch usually enters a bird or two, and the Schulner's and La Geese's and also some big Ameraucana people ,one of whom actually developed the Ameraucana's and was instramental in getting them into the SOP. He also has the female blue wheaton bantam that posed for the picture in the sop book. I heard Larry La Geese won something at that big Indianapolis show last year. And Schulner's are selling their silkies nation wide now for quite a pretty penny. (I don't even bother showing my silkies) Maybe I will put one in for the fun of it. If i can turn her white again. Mine are yard birds and they get to roll in dirt and such things. So, when I show I really would be happy if I even got a third place ribbon.

LOL

My friend the judge bought a pair of modern game bantams last year for $100 a pair out of Texas. I am sure theitr off spring will be in the show. So mine that I got from Duane Urche as babies , although very very nice, may have a struggle competing against those.

We shall see.

I know the Schulners have a special diet for their birds year round and keep them in shade all the time and on lots of clean shavings or long grass(except the whites). No corn whatsoever. And wheat mixed with grains and pellets etc....

Afternoon To All....Congrats on the trophys TO! That Tommy is just dang nice. He knows how to get attention...he will be telling everyone in the barn it's his trophy and has a picture to prove it!

Hope the OM has good news at the Doctor Frenchie.

Sorry to hear about the coon problems Amy...hope you can get even soon.

Heat Advisory here today....feels like it too.

Good Luck bl4....I use to get pheasants from Dr. Oastermeyer (sp) who lived right in Wega on the pond.He had all kinds of poultry....ducks, peafowl, etc.... he never had a problem then...it was in the mid 70's, but it was still poultry in the city limits, and it was large numbers he kept too. I suppose all his neighbors are long gone now....go west on main street and then off to the right, he was on the south side of the pond, nice big old house with a huge yard in back. Pens might still be there?

Stay Cool..... bigz

Tiki- my noisy chick squawks anytime I open the door of my house to come out, anytime I approach the coop, whenever I come in, and now she is squawking at 7am and waking me up. I figure that if I can here her then the neighbors can too!

BIG NEWS FLASH!!! on ABC >>>>> Someone who is certified (yeah certified what I say?! ha) has declared that global warming has now been officially determined to be caused by humans. duh!
Certified? Or certifiable? I've got news for that person: at least 95% of the problems on this planet are caused by humans and our uncontrolled population growth.

Kris, so sorry about your silkie.

FT, I hope ETs tests all go good.

Sorry about your losses.

Bf4, hope you're feeling better today. If the yolk was still there, you don't have an egg eater. The shell was probably just fragile & broke when someone stepped on it. As far as the laying on your back comment, I will not say a word..............

CONGRATULATIONS on the ribbons/trophies, Terri!!!!!

Cind, get a Jap beetle trap. The chickens will eat them by the ton, and there is definitely no shortage of them around. Congrats on finding homes for most of the babies.

Good luck, Bl4!!!!!

Oh, Amy! I am sooooo sorry!

With the drought and all the flora dying, the wildlife is just going to get more desperate.

Good luck, Carol. I hope you can find a good source of hay soon.

Congrats on the job!

cs, what breed is your noisy hen?

Finally caught up! A good day to sit in front of the puter & read. It is ugly hot out there! Thankfully there is a breeze & some clouds. To all of you who got rain the other day,

I really feel terrible for the farmers. The fields down here look pathetic. Stay cool, everyone! bbl

Good afternoon--just got home from work and am doing a timer thing to get stuff done...this place is worse than usual! DD26 even did some cleaning last week and it looked really nice for a day or two. Routines--that is what we need!

Another chick eas dead in the chick tv. I dont think they are too hot...most are under the light. THis one was a late hatch and it had crooked toes so I guess maybe it was just weak. Sorry to hear of others' losses...there have been so many it is hard to keep track for sure!

THanks for the compliments on the trophies. I have not accumulated the energy to put them in the rafters yet.
A past client called and a raccoon ripped a hole in her duck tractor and ate all 10 or the ducks she got a few weeks ago! She is coming out on Tuesday to get more...I sure hope I still have some. I think that fox has been helping himself to more than just chickens!

There goes my timer....I think I will run the vacuum for a while...might as well develop a good sweat so I can feel really chilly when I stop..
.WHat's for supper? I'll tell you that when I am done with the "big sucker" LOL! Terri O

It is a warm one for sure.. I mowed some grass on the far end of the garden.. found my new garden hose way over there in the tall grass/buckwheat.. IDK how it got there,, nephew I guess..

I have a kid coming for 6 guinea keets.. I have 7.. might as well give him 7 for the price of 6 , eh ?

the pair of guineas still have the remaining 2 babies.. big surprise to me..

One turkey had two guinea babies living with her as she is sitting on her eggs, but they are no longer with her..

I would like to run a night camera here.. I'll bet it is a lively place after dark..

still can't get the hydraulics to work on the tractor.. I am thinking it might be a glob of air in the pump.. but that should self prime eventually.. I have to go get some hydraulic oil to do the job right.. tomorrow.

Brian came over to give my puppy a shot.. I think he really came for some raspberry pie, though..

..........jiminwisc...........

CC- she is a RIR and 5mos old. She is a beautiful bird, but really likes to say hi!
wee.gif

I really like her, but because of our lack of legal right to own them...I am afraid of getting caught.

Maybe she is about to lay and pissy from the heat. She is probably holding in her first egg waiting for the right temperature, so she is egg-stipated!

Oh well!

FT- any update on the horse? Are u still wanting them to offer the horse to you?

Amy- I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.

TO- congrats, great pictures, and sorry about the chickie.

I want to know how all of you that are baking, canning, and cooking find the time! I am jealous!!!!!!! It all sounds yummy.

CS, you should just start doing what I am doing! Go to the board and get the ball rolling! Appleton JUST passed a chicken ordinance through their Health Department board, all they need to do is pass it in the Council and they will be able to have chickens!
wee.gif

An Appleton health panel approved new rules Thursday that would allow residents to raise up to four chickens in coops within city limits.
The proposal has been in the works for months and has drawn scrutiny from opponents who say the chickens will attract rodents, run loose and produce a mountain of paperwork for city staff.
The full council is scheduled to take up the issue Wednesday night.
Mayor Tim Hanna, who sits on the health panel, voted in favor of the plan.
“I like this idea. It keeps us moving forward and on track with our progressive tradition,” Hanna said.
City staff, including Health Officer Kurt Eggebrecht, suggested a “neighborhood clause” that would require anyone who wishes to raise chickens to get permission from all abutting neighbors.
The panel voted to strike down that clause, but it could be reinserted next week.
Ald. Cathy Spears said she polled her constituents door-to-door and found them 2-1 opposed to the chicken ordinance. She voted against the plan, and suggested keeping the neighborhood consent rule, with an appeals process.
Tim Mirkes, environmental health supervisor with the city, said the new rules could add hundreds of hours of extra work to the already strained department if the measure passes.

And they have a FB page City Peeps!

I have not heard anything from the city yet (knock on wood). I tried to find the place you were talking about BigZ, but since there are a few big white houses along the lake on this side of town, I was not sure which one you are talking about....

Took the DH swimming today.... this is the third time this year he has gone swimming.... he no longer looks like a giant marshmallow... ;)

Made Jerk chicken on the grill tonight with Pico de Gallo, brown rice, fresh muskmelon, corn on the cob, and a pineapple! Tastes of summer!

Attracting rodents is always one of the things people that are opposed to this think of right away. I am surprised nobody has mentioned the BirdFlu, of course that hasn't had much press time lately. I really am against this thing about having a consensus with the neighbors though. That is what the city council making rules is for. We might as well take a consensus on dog ownership. etc. etc then. Well hopefully after they talk about it and mull it over they will eventually vote it
fl.gif
in.

When Eau Claire tried to pass it someone wrote in to the newspaper that their neighbors had some chickens that used their pool! They put that in the opinions page. Eau Claire is continuing it's tradition of being very conservative and sticking with the status quo of no progressive changes.
