Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Nice cool day today!

Not as "chilly" as up by Bigz, but a beautiful day nevertheless. The chickies were definitely enjoying it too. They had a ton of energy today, (not to mention libedo), ahem, which was not exactly good for the brown, slightly less crispy, pathetic excuse of a lawn I have. The rain softened it up just enough to make clawing and scratching it out by its roots that much easier and more fun.

Yes this weather is great!!! I guess you thought you could slip that in without anyone noticing if the letters were tiny

eh? My eyes arent so good I had to squint.

BigFam that is funny about the storm. Maybe not so funny for your neighbors though. Aw yep when my kids were little there was a low humm, or not so low, sound to the whole house. Forgot about that. It is so quiet and peaceful here now.

As for the silkies I give them a haircut just in the front of their poof and under their eyes a bit. I still don't trust them to be free ranging unsupervised. They can get lost in a New York minute. A smaller area for them to roam on the grass would be ideal. Like a portable play pen for silkies. with a top. You can build panels out of 1 X 1's or 1 X 2's (4ft long X 3ft tall) and then put chicken wire on them. On the ends of the panels screw in little eyelets and then to connect them together get some kind of heavy metal stick and slip thru the eyelets. 6 of these should make a nice little pen for them. Then you could throw some bird or deer mesh over the top.

Vicki what a nice picture in my minds eye of the turkeys. They sound rather tame. It sounds like Eden. You reminded me why I love to watch my chickens. They are so into their own little world and it is so interesting and relaxing to watch them. Thanks. I lost sight of that for a while.

Amy glad you got the masked bandit.

And Hi to everyone.

Hey chicken doctor experts needed... one older 2-3 year old girl in my coop this morning, is listless, pale floppy comb and feels really light when you pick her up... what would you say this could be? Going to F&F to get some antibiotics per Carol...

Could be a whole host of things Kristi. Worms, mites, illness, virus (antibiotics wouldn't work), tainted food (but others would be affected), stress. My advice would be to isolate her in case of contagion and to keep others from stressing her further. I'd maybe try some vitamins & electrolytes in her water first to see if it helps any. You don't want to medicate if you don't have to. Observe her behavior (thirsty? Not eating/drinking?) and her stools for 24 hours. A probiotic wouldn't hurt either. Foods high in vitamin A help, as do dandelion leaves (nutritional powerhouse).

You could take a stool sample to a local vet to have them check it out. Good luck! I hope she pulls through for you.

Thanks CC... she has been really thirsty. i picked up some electrolytes and will start with that. she is calmly sitting in a tote in the cool basement. could be dehydration for all i know.
thanks

Good afternoon! Going out to pick beans shortly...making them stirfried with sesame seeds. I have a taste for those beans...
Kristi--what breed is the hen? IF she is a production type there is probably not much you can do..they get that way, kind of "all used up." Otherwise CC's advice is spot on!

Good for you on the coon Amy! Maybe at the next bash we should have some target practice for us ladies? WHen my DD was in Pony CLub they did this thing where they had to shoot a pistol...I was really good at that...not so good with the long barrel though! We had a tree fall down right where my fox comes into the chicken area...I am hoping that DH gets it all cut up this weekend! I havent been "fox hunting" for 3 mornings! I hope he/they havent gotten anything else!

I suppose I'd better get outside and get the beans picked...was going to make meatloaf but I didnt take out the meat...I think it will be chicken...I have some thawed that should be used...
Later! Terri O

Nice outside but still good sweating weather.. I got the pump off the tractor,.. bad news/good news: bad news, the splines inside the shaft are gone.. good news, the splines on the pump are fine.. bad news, I think that shaft cost me about $80.oo in 2006.. good news, the pump won't have to be replaced.. bad news, I still have to disconnect the shaft from the tractor,, good news, I am not going to do it today.. tomorrow will be soon enough since I can't take it in until Monday anyway..

have about 20 keets in the TV.. they aren't mine though..

the blackberries are going nuts !!! Annie and Brian each picked about 3 ice cream buckets full and that was not even a good start on the one patch.. Brian looked like he crawled through a barbed wire tunnel.. he is on blood thinner medicine .. Ya gotta love to pick berries to go through that much discomfort..
Brian found another guinea nest in the patch..

I went to the feed mill and picked up 22 bags of feed at 1 PM.. the guy who loaded it into my blazer didn't look so pleased that he had to do it..He prolly thought that since it was Friday, he could sort of coast the rest of the day.. sorry buddy, but I just paid your salary for this week..

Dinner is ready to cook...DH says that Bob Uecker grew Knockwurst in his garden according to the Klementz comercial...maybe he is a relative of Vicki's? Sure looks delish though! Similar here...not enough beans to have the sesame type so I am sauteing them with garlic, Yellow and green summer squash, mushrooms and tomatoes. All from the garden but the shrooms and maters. Soon....I made some double baked potaoes at work to day and brought home leftovers. That and the chicken and some fiery radishes should make a good dinner!
OK--radish question...I pulled them all out cause the brussels sprouts and cabbage needed the room. They are VERY sharp..that isnt a problem but I had to give at least half of them to the chickens because there were tunnels through them! What in the world eats radishes? I have never had bugs in the radishes before...
I really had to do some battling with the weeds to find the pepper plants! I also found some Swiss chard that had come up. It was the only thing to do so in the 4 rows of seeds I planted last. The spinach, fennel and something else never showed at all! (and that was BEFORE the weeds came in) Ticks me off...I LOVE fennel!

Wekk I think I will take some food out to my mealworm colonies...they are looking a bit dry...maybe give the girls some treats too!
Have a good night! Terri O
