Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Morning all! Hope all of you in NE WI survived the storms last night. Wow did it rain and lightening! So glad for the rain, but really sad that the corn I had been nursing through the drought is all laying flat now

What a shock to see this morning. Maybe it will pop back up

Hoping the rain holds off so my fence for the chickens can be built today. Can't wait for my chickens to have more room to play.

That blue Andalusian you gave her H&R is spectacular! Of course they all look good when there is no roo to bother them! (just think what beauties we would all be hey girls???

I hope those links are useful huntress. Let me know if he is still breeding brahmas?! They are pretty ones.

I got side tracked on the computer last night looking at websites for cochins. Looking through the fall crop and leftovers to see who is getting rid of what for the winter. Maybe I will just get a pair

I have way too many roosters. Guess one of these days I am going to have to do something about that

Hi all!
Man, miss a day and you miss lots!! Managed to survive the storm last night. BTB wanted to sleep out on the porch. So DH left him out there. Then the storm came and I found out that cat can scream like a banshee. So Dh got up, let him in while I turned on the emergency/weather radio so we could get into the basement if we needed to. So I hopped back into bed and I had all 5 small dogs plastered to me with Bubba all plaster on my stomach. If they could have managed to get under me they would have. The one saving grace was Aiden did not bring his toys in the bed too. He's on this rope toy kick and wants to sleep with one. The problem is he stuffs it is a place that he feels it's safe and I end up sleeping on it. I'll be glad when he gets back on his fleece toy kick.
It was quite the wild night and I am exhausted.
Other then that, the chickens and rabbits came through it all fine.
I missed so much that I can't remember half of it!

Welcome to all the Newbies! Hope to see you around!!

Vicki-I agree with CC and Amy. The change in feed is a big reason for your egg issues. The hot weather has a big part to play too. Also, having birds in poor health like yours were when you rescued them and then getting them healthy, that can throw off their cycle for a bit. That is normal actually. Just give them quality feed and a little extra oyster shell if you have any. That will help bump their systems back up. Other then that give them time and they'll be back on track! Probably just in time for molting season!! LOL!!

BigFam-interesting about the lump...

BL4-Good luck at the meeting ! Love the article!

Elaine-Thanks for posting that article about Dane county rural areas. I have to agree with the guy who was saying why make chicken ownership a beuarocracy (sp). I'm in the unincorporated part of Dane of rural Dane had not idea that other places were like mine. It seams to me like one of those things that chicken ownership is/was a giving in rural areas so why did/does it need to be allowed ordinance wise? I have to say, more people in my neighborhood are getting chickens getting them again from selling off their previous flocks. I even have a neighbor with white birds of some type in a dog run with a little coop.

Well, best get to getting lunch!

Saw some black clouds coming so I went out to get some of the now sparse lettuce for tonights taco's. FLASH CRACK made it back to the house just as straight line winds and rain hit. Course had enough lettuce for supper. gotta eat ! Didn't get any storms last night and there was nothing on radar about this, got 3/8" in very short order. We'll take it! Real border line about up Nort they raised the temps 5* think we're gonna go and if it sucks we'll come home. Really need to get up there. Think it was Amy or ??? we're just Nort of Tomahawk in Bradley. Stop in if your in the neighborhood always cold beverages of choice. MLH now that's a picture and you say you didn't get much sleep? judge hope that corn recovers!

TO glad to hear that chick made a recovery! Sounded scary at first. Glad to hear MXM is doing good! Think the kids will talk about how cool we were.

. I am sure you guys are right on the money. Guess I was being a bit naive, thinking that Purina crumbles would be on the same quality level as Nutrena pellets. Also noticed my best hen, Soup, was going after every buttie's bottom feathers again as well so I'm doing a serious increase in protein for a bit til they've been back on the Nutrena for a while. Gave the girls a treat this afternoon (feeling a little guilty about my screw up) and broke 2 new hay bales into their run. I get a kick out of crockpot! She's worse than a kid at Christmas when you open a new bale for her to "play" in.

I'm sorry Doc, but the mental image of you sprinting to avoid the rain is very, very, very funny to me

I have been having very few eggs lately. Like 1-2 a day, or none. I just assumed the heat was the issue. The birds finished the Purina stuff so I just picked up Nutrena Layer from FF the other day. I added whole oats (copied from Jim's posts). I got 4 eggs today out of 5 layers! I guess feed does make a difference!

(I think CC had advised me not to do Purina eons ago. But I didn't listen. I guess she was right. But for Pete's sake... Don't TELL her I said that! I'll never hear hear the end of it...)

I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And you didn't listen. Now there's a shocker.

Vicki-your welcome! The main reason for the issues with poor egg quality from Purina is that 1. They don't use chealated minerals 2. Their vitamin pack is weak. 3. No pre or pro biotics. From what I understand, Pruina doesn't believe in them. 4. More then likely their calcium/phospherous ratio is screwed up and the hens cannot process the calcium they are consuming. A hen can eat calcium till she is blue in the face, but unless she can process it correctly, it does her no good. Phospherous is expensive so that might be an area Purina cut corners on. So while the hens lay eggs, the egg shells are poor quality.
I hope that the Girls get back to normal soon!! Since your out of meal worms, you can give them dry or canned dog or cat food to boost protein too. Canned is the best. BUT be carefull!!!!! To much dog or cat food can give them to much protein which can cause the hens not to lay well also. A couple of small spoon fulls as a treat everyday or every other day should be about right.

BigFam-Tsk tsk....Not listening to CC. What were you thinking?
