"If you never had a Maremma, or an Anatolian, you would not understand their ability to mull over your command for a few minutes before acting on it or ignoring it.. they were bred to do their own decision making.. "
Yes they do !!! I can atest to that !!!! That is why we ended up tying our Great Pyrenese (sp)
I bought a shock collar for Rex too. He would hear a car coming down the gravel road and would run to the road, sit in the middle of it and not move !!!!
Well, I can't sit outside waiting for the few cars to go by and plus with all of his hair I'd have to shave his neck. So that was a waste of money.
But we now have a lovely hyper chocolate lab that dh brought home a few years back and she's fine when you are with her and she'll leave the chickens alone (for the most part) but when she sets her eyes one one you had better yell and yell loud.
When we're not here she'll chase and kill. Been there done that. That's Reba.
River on the other hand the female GP loves goats. She'll chase the chickens in an attempt to play !!!!
Rex the male GP is getting older now and is to lazy to "play" with the chickens. Actually we put his food in the dog house because the chickens were eating his food. Now they even go in the dog house to eat it. He doesn't care.
We didn't have chickens when we got the dogs so they weren't raised with them as pups but they are big pups and even just playing can kill the chicken.
They are exactly like Jim said. They have a mind of their own. I don't care what anyone says.... You can't trust any animal 100% no matter how well trained it is...... Heck we can't even trust the human species !!!
And speaking of naughty dogs. River and Reba decided to visit the neighbors the other day..... over a mile away !!! Luckily they knew they were ares and they came down here to tell us.
Seems like if we let them out together to play they aren't happy staying on our 80 acres !!!! Dang dogs.... gotta love em though !!!
