Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

"If you never had a Maremma, or an Anatolian, you would not understand their ability to mull over your command for a few minutes before acting on it or ignoring it.. they were bred to do their own decision making.. "

Yes they do !!! I can atest to that !!!! That is why we ended up tying our Great Pyrenese (sp)
I bought a shock collar for Rex too. He would hear a car coming down the gravel road and would run to the road, sit in the middle of it and not move !!!!
Well, I can't sit outside waiting for the few cars to go by and plus with all of his hair I'd have to shave his neck. So that was a waste of money.
But we now have a lovely hyper chocolate lab that dh brought home a few years back and she's fine when you are with her and she'll leave the chickens alone (for the most part) but when she sets her eyes one one you had better yell and yell loud.
When we're not here she'll chase and kill. Been there done that. That's Reba.

River on the other hand the female GP loves goats. She'll chase the chickens in an attempt to play !!!!

Rex the male GP is getting older now and is to lazy to "play" with the chickens. Actually we put his food in the dog house because the chickens were eating his food. Now they even go in the dog house to eat it. He doesn't care.

We didn't have chickens when we got the dogs so they weren't raised with them as pups but they are big pups and even just playing can kill the chicken.
They are exactly like Jim said. They have a mind of their own. I don't care what anyone says.... You can't trust any animal 100% no matter how well trained it is...... Heck we can't even trust the human species !!!

And speaking of naughty dogs. River and Reba decided to visit the neighbors the other day..... over a mile away !!! Luckily they knew they were ares and they came down here to tell us.
Seems like if we let them out together to play they aren't happy staying on our 80 acres !!!! Dang dogs.... gotta love em though !!!

still beats a good day at work though...gotta love being needed by so many.

I use the wormguard broad spectrum in the feed...I've never wormed my flocks...just sayin. I have had samples tested with nothing found...wasted money.

Sorry about Prince Jim......

Yep, the quick clean waterers are my fav...I have 5 of them...if you order more than one they ship 2 together and one needs assembly...good time to learn...LOL!

Forgot to ask Doc about the marinara recipe...care to share?

Leftover corn off the grill..cut off the cob, with onions and maters and cheese, butter...delish...kinda has a Wis twist of flavor...

BIGZIO~ thank you!

I asked in my original post if anyone had heard of wormguard.

One question. How old do the chicks/pullets need to be before you can start adding it to their feed or does it matter? Where do you get yours? I LOVE the idea of handling things more organically than chemically.

I also love you leftover corn idea! yummmmmm!

uggh... I am in love.... with my neighbors d'uccle's that he is selling. I need a bigger coop fast! He has beautiful pairs and jeuveniles that are great and cheap. He keeps getting lavender roos but not sure how they are thrown.
He has a black and white mottled d'uccle hen that is gorgeous. Now he was nice enough to give me four eggs for my broody. Hoping some hatch or I can talk hubbs into letting me add one or two, although he would like his nice ones to go in pairs.
ugh... I wanted large fowl birds for egg sales but love these bantams so much...

Hi Frenchie! I make apple sauce every year. I don't really have a recipe, I just fill a pot full of cored and peeled apples, pour in a bunch of FRESH apple cider (not from concentrate) like Mussleman's sold by the gallon every fall and let it cook. I usually let it cook down some and add more cider and cook it down again. That way you can get away with using a mix of apples and still come out with a nice rich taste and no sugar! Do the same thing for my apple butter, just keep cooking, adding cider, keep cooking til you can stand a spoon in it. some folks like to add cinnamon and brown sugar to their apple butter and sometimes I do when making a batch for the grandkids.

So much for the great roost experiment!

Must not have went so well. When I peeked in this evening after locking them in, Broody Butt and Noodle were in one of the nest boxes. Can only imagine what made mom give up on that idea.

Noodle didn't seem quite ready for bed either (like any kid

) and mom kept stuffing it back under her wing.

Oh yes... cassie... how is the quick clean waterers different? Do they help with the green slime from the sun?

Well this is my first one. It was recommended here as a good one because all the junk that gets into the lip of the waterer doesn't go back into the bucket, so the whole thing doesn't get dirty. You can just clean out the bottom and the rest of the water in the bucket stays clean. I'm sure someone here who has used them awhile will chime in and give their two cents too! Looks like a great design to me!

Jim BBQ is easy. Burger/ Tomato soup/ seasoning/ onions/ peppers I can brings some if ya need em...... and a dash of hot sauce, I can also cook if Annie is tired or working, its not a bother at all for me, if I was home I would be cooking anyway. That way she will get a break as well....... I can throw a batch of buns together yes they have potatoes in them and the water they are cooked in......... makes a nice textured bread or buns.
I don't want you to apologize for using a shock collar if I had one I would definitely use it, just can't afford one........... I just didn't want you all to think I beat my dogs because I don't, but if they need to be reprimanded they are, dogs can try to be the leader and if left to do so ya have all kinds of problems.... and bad habits. I have had many different breeds over the years the hardest one ever to train was my Tigger! the Pitbull in her is ridiculously stubborn and hard headed and the mastif in her makes a good dog, with just a bit of stupid.........so she was a pain to get to listen and had to be tied or she would just just run off and totally ignore your calls. she never stood in the road, but she would run right down the center line..or chase the jogging lady all the way to the river......grrrrr silly dog, glad we finally got her broke from it or she would not be an old doggy now, she would have been a dead doggy in her early life. Later all Kim

There is always one in the flock!!!! CC!!!

Wow, DrH, can I borrow some of your energy? Please? I hope L's surgery went well.

for her.

Casie, I see your Polish approves of the new coop. I hope you took LOTS of pics of it. Those walls will not be white for very much longer.

My quick clean waterer came assembled too, and right away too. For the price of the shipping, it should have.
ep.gif
But they are extremely nice waterers. Huge & easy to fill and clean.

Jim, I'm glad to hear Nora is back. Scary about where she likes to sit too. Sorry about losing Prince. At least he went fast.

About time you checked in, Sandi! We worry, ya know! (As DrH would say). So sorry your aunt isn't doing well. I am glad to hear ET is doing well.

Vicki, no problem.

It is from Kaytee and is in a green 7 oz bag for $6 something. Those stupid "Happy Hen Treats" at TSC are $14+ for 10 oz.

They're nuts!

Ok, so what is wormguard and where do you get it?

Kristi, add about a tablespoon or 2 of ACV to a gallon of water to keep the slime away.

Well, I am so ready for bed! It was so nice out this morning, I decided to clean out the coop. Then I noticed a lot of dead canes in the raspberry bushes, so I decided to trim those out. Then I figured I better weed around them since the grass was starting to grow up through them. Then I figured I better mulch around them to help keep the weeds at bay, so back to the coop for more cleaning. Then I thought since I was cleaning, I better scrub out all the waterers while I was at it. Then I came inside to do the dishes and clean out the indoor birds cage.

Why can't I get this much done every day? Oh yeah. Because I either feel like hell or am lazy. Oh, and at lock up time, I had to chase the teens around and put them, repeatedly, on the roost in the coop. They haven't quite grasped the concept that they can't sleep by Jack anymore and have to hang with the big girls now. Of course being bullied by the Moosettes doesn't help matters either. So that was my colorful day. And with that I say sweet dreams, all!
