Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Fish Fry Friday Evening To Everyone....good to hear that Twain is able to be home for the week-end instead of being in that dreaded hospital. I know they try to help, but not mentally for sure. Hope he has a great fast recovery! If he was here we could do some plinkin off the porch for fun and braggin rights.

Nice pics...thanks for sharing them...small and wide...LOL!

Sorry about the kitten Cind...Only the strong survive, are wise words. Seems harsh at times for sure.

Sounds like donny is doing good at home. I Hope the worst is over for him.

Time to start a fire in the fireplace. Need a good one going for the Blue Bloods later.

Morning all! I spent several hours reading a new to me wheat-free cookcook. Making me anxious to try bread baking again...my first efforts werent so great! LOL!
The radio has said that the fire down the road was arson...they are looking for help from the community. In the other direction there have been 2 robberies and one stolen car in the last week! I am wondering what in the name of God is going on in peoples' minds! We moved our family out of the city so we didnt have to deal with that stuff (we thought). I guess the days are truly over for leaving the keys in the cars and the house unlocked...sh!t now I have to find keys to the house! The police told my neighbor that there is a heroin ring in my town and the kids are going into houses in the country looking for cash to support their habits. Even when people are home! I wish my dogs were more aggressive.

36* here this morning...but the sun is shining! I have to head out soon and will be wearing my coveralls! BBRRR! My blood is not thick enough yet for sure. Hard to believe DD and I had shorts on and sat out in the sun 2 days ago!

Does anyone know where to get "Fishzole?" It is the Metrondiasole(?) that you can get OTC. I want to treat my hen with canker with it and see if it works. I wonder if Blodgetts has it?
Google here I come! LOL!
Tommy hears a roo outside my window crowing and now he is doing it too. That is a really loud sound right next to your ear for sure! OWWW!
Great looking chicks BigFam...I dont have any white Ameracaunas (just sayin'...)
CC is that one of Moose's kids? WHat a fluffy butt! First I thought she was a cochin with all those feathers...
Sorry about the kitty Cind,

I hate when babies die! Speaking of....last night I was closing up and had just tossed cracked corn in the barn isle, turned around to put the scoop back and SS's only baby ran right under my boot!

I was so ticked at my self! I had just been admiring that little one cause it was starting to look just like it's Mama...had to put it out of it's misery....I wont go into details--still disturbs me greatly! Interesting about the fermented mash...what are the benefits? And more importantly, to those that do it, have you seen and benefits? Sounds like a while lot more work to me!

OK I better get outside. I have a really old lady to sit with today...she is 105!!! Gotta bring some magazines along I think...
Have a fantastic day everyone! Vicki and others--I hope you thaw out up there! Sheesh that is chilly! I still have my hoses out...dont want to drag them through the mud to get them into the well pit...not yet.
JJ--we all know that you pick!

Great doormat too...if anybody finds one of those I NEED one for sure! Just looked for that same pic but of my porch...cant find it!

I have used it on chicks. This time I am taking pictures as they are progressing so others can see the results.

These are a 1 day old 2 day old and 2 three day old. The poop is more solid and they are absorbing more of what they eat.

2-3-4 day old chicks
will post these same birds in a few days. The growth is remarkable. The feathering is so fast. The 4 day olds look all feathered out and at this time of year I am delighted.
Additional Benefits are:

No feed all over for rodents.
Better nutrient absorption through gut conditioning (no scours or loose stools)
less feed required, less water
these are all cornish crosses with NH/RIR/S/X
I have all heavy breads in this hatching - At least I believe I collected and hatched out just their eggs and ate the others.( I only hatch out Orpingtons for show or 4H)
Leghorns I usually just eat, however sometimes one lays a huge egg and it get placed with a heavy hatch out.

We had chicken tonight.... I am dreaming of raising my own chooks for eating..... I know they would taste SO much better than these whimpy store-bought chooks. I think the bird we cooked tonight was around 4 lbs. NOT big enough for a family of 6! I told my DS to defrost 2 chickens, but he only did one. We had sweet potatoes too.... YUM! My DH asked me what the difference was between sweet potatoes and yams was since the store was selling yams.... I told him they label sweet potatoes as yams but yams are completely different......

I cannot wait to get my one fresh free-range eggs either!

MLH, so glad it is NOT stones! I can do some digging if you like, research is my specialty!

Stirring up trouble on FB (imagine that....) that is about all that is happening here.....

Gave my DS the assignment of making banana bread tomorrow..... I have a LOT of over ripe bananas that need to be put to use. I already made a banana cream pie so they should be used for bread instead.

Cute chicks BigFam!

Sorry about the baby kitty Cind..... sometimes that happens. I have a Runt myself..... I ended up feeding him a very rich diet for a while so he would catch up to the others.... he is sitting right here next to me. He never did get as big as the other boys but he sure is a beauty.

I think instead of doughnuts tomorrow I will pick up some fresh fruit for the boys. Something 'healthy' to keep them going and raise their spirits...... I really hate it that the local doughnut bakery closed.

TTFN!

hi folks,

well it's official, this weather does suck. got the WPS bill and last cycle was 79% colder than a year ago,,,yeah I know it was a nice fall last year but geeze

Terri on the ff,,,,like I said I started in late Sept,,,I'm feeding 48 birds now and had been going through 400# of feed per month,,,I doubt I will use 300# this month. Reasons,,,like deli said, better absorption, less water (hard to say with puddles every other freaking day), the young birds are doing well, the old gals in moult still have a sheen and feathers are regrowing, the poops are firm, not much #3, I did just worm them a week ago. Egg count is down, but I attribute that to the moulting, and the weather.

as far as added work,,,well I set up the original buckets that took 48hrs to get going,,,now I simply take out the drained mash in the morning and bring in the dry mix for the next day,,,add to the bucket, back slop the mix and stir. Think sour dough, that is the key getting the ferment going and keeping that in your mix. Like I posted, I want to see how they do when the free ranging is done, my birds are really active all day and I do have some nice areas they work, few bugs now but lots of green they are still getting. I'm using a 60/40 mix of layer mash and scratch with 5% Calf Manna added. I anticipate adding some alfalfa and or kelp meal this winter.

nice job on the hatch so far Heather

nice "butt" CC

cute chicks deli

nice tease Jim,,,,,,lets see,,,Nov 8,,,hmmm

Awwwwww Cind sorry about the kitten............ that is just so sad....:hit
I'll cry with ya I feel like crying all day anyway........... I miss my grandson, I'm another year older, my son never even bothered to call me and I'm broke..........

Plus I hate this crap with Straightshots trucking all they have done is screw Adam around, offer him less pay than he was told he would make, a straight truck, and call in to see if they have anything for him everyday and generally make him feel like crap an make him doubt this whole thing........after he has worked hard to get his diploma and endorsements, plus it cost us 3 grand in tuition, that we must pay back.
BigZ he is going to Kohel Monday has an appointment with Steve.... is he the owner, or what? he did say they usually don't hire anyone new this late in the season because of winter roads......so all I can do is pray, he also has an interview Tuesday at Performance if Kohel don't take him, I hate this crap, we were warned by are friend Jayme, that this Paul ( trainer) at Straighshots is the biggest jerk around, but like Adam and me discussed today if this is how they let there new drivers be treated.....by this guy he doesn't want to work for them anyway period............I told him they don't deserve his hard working ethics and abilities. He just graduated from thee best trucking school in the nation, in the top 5 of his class, he even had another fellow student over here one sat. to help him learn to back up because he was having trouble, and was congratulated by the teachers..on doing a good job helping Mike learn to back up. But according to Paul he can't do anything Anything, and what did FVT teach him anyway.......... well a lot more than Paul apparently who doesn't even know how to do the pretrip brake checks before leaving the yard, or he's just too friggen lazy to do so....anyone who puts a jerk in a position of power who doesn't deserve that position is going to have trouble, no wonder no one stays there.... the guy is dangerous, because he has been given all the power to wield however he wishes, because he's sleeping with the boss lady, but in reality he is not doing his job training a new driver he is there to ridicule and manipulate the new guys, because he can.......... but the most important things in safety are not being adhered too, so an idiot driving a 80,000 lb rig is loose out there and he never even checks his truck b4 leaving the yard......... if the brakes go apparently he feels so secure in his job he doesn't care........Adam does it by the book how he was taught to keep everyone safe, but Paul has 10 fits about wasting company time........... ***?? No thanks plus when Adam looked up the place on CSA scores they were not good in many categories........ like the tresh hold is 60% they are at 56.5 so just under what is allowed before the Dot steps in........hummm wonder why maybe because there so called trainer is a moron........ arggggg off my pissy pot now sorry to be venting to everyone but I'm so miffed off about this crap.......

anyway Jim when we gonna do chickens...how about tomorrow? I need to pick up my chickies too from David they are probably eating ya outa house and home.......like these boys are doing to me... !!!
But anyhoo I should go b4 I start crying or be -itching again, I'm not in a such a good mood tonight............. have a good sleep everyone hopefully tomorrow will look better...........night guys Kim

My mom was over for dinner tonight and at one point she could see I was frustrated. She asked me why. I said I didn't want to say. She kept asking. I said. "ok,this chicken its one of my gold laced orpingtons and he's so skinny. I had him butchered too soon." She goes "aw, f#!$ I'm not eating that." Still a city girl that will eat store bought meat but not an animal she's seen the face of.

Evening/early morning all. Sorry Ghost rider.

Cin lady I am so sorry about the kitty.
Must love hens I am glad Twain is home
big Family of 4 congrats on the chicks
Delisha, they are so cute

Well today was long. After the Pancake breakfast I bought some metal roofing for the rest of the covered coop, Most of the enclosed coop has a roof but i ran short of roofing, I will finish it up this weekend and start enclosing the open coop

the girls are still shy, They love staying in the coop. I don't think they go out for more than 1 hour a day. They aren't freaking out when they see me but not that friendly yet. I need to plug in the water heater tomorrow. It is supposed to get down to 27 tonight.
well off to bed night all

Hi All!

TO.... Awww.... poor chickie.... guess we both had a bad day with little ones.
hmm.png

Jim... I think a little water on the feed is cheaper than the beer but maybe not as much fun! LOL

MLH... Hope it stays good news with Twain.

Dan.... That's pretty much what I do too with the mash.... just keep it going! I'm thinking about adding an extra bucket so it can set an extra day. With the cooler weather it takes a little longer to "work". I do put dry feed in the coop but with about 35 birds I only go through about 4 qts of dry a day, less if it's a good forage day. They get about 3-4 qts. of wet mash and scraps a day. I like the idea of the calf manna. DH brings home old produce all winter so that would be their "winter greens". Yea, not as much waste either, that powder that's left in the dry feed pan I just dump in the wet mash. And they don't throw the wet around like they do the dry. Works for me.

GR... Sorry Adam's new job sucks.... hope he can do better soon!

Speaking of animals who drink....
I had a gerbil when I was a teen and lived to be almost 8years old! Life span of a gerbil is 2-3 years. When I got married my mom decided that the gerbil should stay with her because he was getting old and a change would be rough on him (I think was 6 by then.) People were amazed he lived so long... then one night when I was "home" playing cards with my mom I learned "their secret". Every night since he was about 2 my mom gave him a couple of drops of brandy and some water in a soda cap! He would get on his wheel... run like hell... then sleep it off. He was a VERY old happy gerbil!

Had a panic attack with the kittens... 2 were missing! ! After no one seeing them for 5 hours and an 1 1/2 hours of looking for them the crawled out from under Neil's bed! I looked there twice! Grrrrrrrr!
barnie.gif
guess they were hiding in a bag.

Guess that's it....Night All!
