Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

As my mother has liked to say on this day "HAPPY TURKEY DAY!!"

for DH and I, not so happy. His car died, so we got him a beater with a heater, and yesterday it decided to have some major issues pop up.
So with a tiny amount of cash in our pockets, we are off to walmart to get coolant, radiator stop leak and some fuses.
We usually have a great get together with friends at a buffet, not this year.
Its him, me and the dogs with some pre cooked turkey, reheatable potatoes, rolls, stuffing in a box, and an over cooked pie I just took out of the oven.

And this week, which was "high lighted" (NOT!

) by my severe mood shifts from peri-menopause (insert rages at stationary objects like walls and coat racks)
the words Marriage counciling and anti-depressants were used... followed by silence and me suddenly curling up into a ball sobbing, and as if I was an extra from a ghost busters movie with being slimed...
yah.. great holiday....

Oh and out of 40 chickens I am getting 2 eggs a day.. yeah.. good times good times.

On the up side, I was able to get the rescue horse a new home, with a wonderful lady around the corner from me, he is her SIL and niece's new horse!!!
yah...some good, alot of bad.. but I know.. it (DON'T SAY IT!!! DOn't!! )nope not gonna jinx myself...
well off to wallyworld, keep fingers crossed the car starts, stays started and that our pre cooked dinner turns out better than the pie...

Good day of Search/Rescue training with the Aussie, lovely weather, think I'll get the boys out for a walk and blow the stink of them (as grandma would say).

The Iowa Blues aren't huge birds, but are large fowl. Mine are 4-6 pounds, the historical listing for the breed is 5-7, but most of the lines still around are smaller and variable at that. I'm selecting towards a little larger, back towards their dual purpose original purpose as a foraging homesteader type of breed. They are quite cold and heat tolerant and pretty easy keepers in the feed department. I love them, hoping to have a bunch of them this spring so I can build up numbers to select breeding stock from.

I always see the kitty link when they are ZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZzZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Cuties, for sure.

I should send DH deer hunting sometime, could use the bones/meat to supplement the dogs' rations. I do partially feed raw, partially kibble. I like to mix it up, give them variety. I've found they tend to have sensitive stomachs when they only get one thing always. Seem to be much more tolerant when the diet changes around. Should probably hit up the people who process venison for people. Bet they have lots of meaty bones available that I could load into the freezer.

OK, off for a walk with the boys.
Question for ya about the raw food diet that you feed to your dogs. As far as venison goes what parts do you feed raw? What bones, raw etc?
I had read once to keep your dogs teeth clean (for my small dogs) was to feed them raw frozen chicken wings. They inhaled them and they never got a chance to defrost. What are your opinions on that?
Thanks
Sandi

Jumped ahead 3 days behind reading so sorry if I am not commenting on any life altering events.....

Anyway Happy Thanksgiving Everyone !!!
Not cooking our turkey until tomorrow. We spent the whole day yesterday in Wausau. I had my eyes checked and DH ET had a follow up appointment for the loop recorder they inplanted in his chest last month.

To tired to get things ready for today. It's just the two of us anyway.
Sure wish we had some moola to go shopping tomorrow but not a dime !!! Oh well, I'm thankful for so many things, money just isn't one of them !!!! LOL

Gonna go out and plant some bulbs I got for $.50 a pack. Hope the pigs or chickens don't dig them up.

I will try to catch up tonight. Boy you guys chat a lot.

Oh and on the rescue horse front. The woman has a jury trial in the beginning of 2013. I don't know if she is actually trying to get her horse back or just get out of the abuse charges !!! Geez. In the mean time her bill is piling up.
If I could find cheap hay I'd go get the boy but haven't found it yet. So Bigz, keep your eyes peeled please. You too Jim.
None of the family got deer. Saw nothing They hunt between Rhinelander and Monico on public land. We invited them over on Sunday to hunt the evening stand but they of course saw nothing ...... Monday there were 4 does in our field. DH ET took a shot at them from a great distance and he thinks he shot to high thinking with the distance he needed to shot higher ????? So no doe for him yet.
Neighbors ticked me off. They dumped two gut piles on the road, when asked why they said to irritate the neighbors, rub it in..... guess I appeared irritated and he said, see it worked. Although I wasn't the one they were trying to irritate. We have two families up here.... Kind of they the Hatfields and McCoys..... I try to stay neutral....Don't want to get in the middle of their decades of family feuds..... Hillbillies !!! Geez !!!

Ok, gonna go outside now.

later all, have a good Turkey Day !!

Hii all...Happy ThansGiving to ya all, hope ya have a wonderful day.....
Mine not so much, no bird here, no stuffing, no pies..Matter of fact just ate my meal for the day i HAD EGGS AND A MUFFIN....
.First year in forever I was not cooking while the hubby was out hunting......First year in my life we are not celebrating TG at all.......... Adam is in HarborCreek Pa. in a hotel for the next 4 days......and I'm miserably alone here........... so such is life, sometimes it really sucks..........If I had money for a bus ticket I would be there tomorrow morning at 1030 am.....round trip leaving Sunday night at 8;30....but a ticket is 274.00 I do not have......... no credit cards I don';t believe in em and have never had the need for one, until now.
I wish I would have let Adam talk me into the one he wanted in case of emergencies...............but no such luck........I said it was just a bill waiting to happen, and if we would have gotten it, it probably would be full right now anyway, and wouldn't do me any good............So anyway just wanted to say hello, and wish everyone a merry day, gonna go read a book or something.......Later all....Kim

For my guys, chicken wings would be pointless, too small, two bites and they would be gone. Chicken necks are the same, too small for them. Chicken backs are nice for my size of dogs. They spend 5 to 10 minutes gnawing and chewing, good for the teeth, big enough to slow them down to gnawing, not so big as to be a problem if they swallow some chunks whole. I stay away from chicken long bones, raw or cooked. Too splintery, too much risk. From larger sources (cow/pig/lam/deer) I feed hunks of raw meat, meaty bones when I can get them (6 to 10 inch lengths of long bones with marrow), ribs are always a nice boney cut if they are big enough to not swallow whole. Otherwise if you can get someone to do a whole grind of the the animal, that's a nice blend of muscle, bone, and organ meats. I really mix it up, I don't feed all raw, but supplement it mostly for the teeth and added glucosamine from the necks/cartilage. One night might be mostly meat/eggs, another might be kibble mixed with canned, another night patties of commercial raw diet, etc. I've found the more variety I add, the better they tolerate it. Hardly ever see soft stools now and their diet is all over the board. They were much more sensitive to diet change when their diet was the same dry kibble every day. Coats look great, good muscle tone and body weight, teeth are looking better all the time since I started with the chicken backs. I do feed them the raw frozen a lot of times, as it slows them down and gives them longer chewing times. They never let it thaw all the way, but gnaw the entire time as it is softening. Feeding raw bones really depends on the dog's temperament for safety. If I had dogs that wolfed everything down whole, I'd stick to larger long bones that they chew to try to get the marrow, but can't possibly swallow, restuffing the bones with canned food or smearing cheese on the inside once the marrow is gone. When the bones get chewed down to 6 inches or start to crack, I throw them out and replace them. WIth my guys, who do take a little more time, I separate them (so no competitive eating) and give them their chicken backs and they sit and work at them at a decent pace, so I feel the risk is pretty low. Have had no vomiting or diarrhea or problems with it thus far.

And holy cow, look at that sunset! 2 more minutes of it, maybe, but wow, what a pink sunset. Gorgeous.

Deal-Next summers bash-Im bringing the rum chattaaatata!

I get the whole needing to thin out the deer to prevent car accidents, keep them healthy etc. And glad for the meat. However, dont like thinking about it, hearing the details of the hunt, or seeing dead things hanging in my garage. (so yes maybe I do like to pretend it all comes from the back room at the grocery store!-Let the bashing begin LOL)
Jon left his doe in the tree so long I got a ladder and cut it down today. Then I drug it into the chicken pen so they could have a tasty treat. I'm not too happy that he cut all of the meat off of it and left a head with a rib cage hanging in our yard for 4 days. It's disgusting.

Quote: Now you have to live with that memory !!! YUCK.

Tomski.... So so sorry you lost Bert !!! Let me know if you would like a few more Roosters.
Planted tons of tulip bulbs today. Dh ET helped me dig trenches.. Now I'm froze down to the bones. Doesn't help that we have the house set at 65 degrees. That will change tonight. I'm cold and hungry. We didn't cook anything today !!!! Feel like crap... something to eat would help.
Was going to make big salads tonight but being so cold I don't know.... Hopefully we'll get the turkey cooked tomorrow.
No biggy.... just another day here. Any day can be Thanksgiving if you think about it.
As far as Chickens in the house...... what that's not normal ????? I agree, what is the difference if you have parrots or chickens or finches or ????
Just don't get caught with an eagle !!! LOL

Just plain old cold and tired today. And we didn't get the crocus or daffodils in yet. Hopefully tomorrow. I might be out there planting in the snow.

Cind.... I gave up long long time ago trying to be a day person. Only regret I have is that my Mom was a day person and I would have had a lot more time to spend with her if only I could have become one.
Ok time to tuck my arms under my shirt and warm them up. And no Doc I won't be pulling out any feathers with them !!! At least I hope not to !!!

OMG BBP! Seriously? You had it hanging in the yard? LMAO here. Mikes thinking its pretty funny as well-I'd die.
Your heading out shopping in this weather? I can't beleive I was in a t shirt this morning and now the ground is covered in white? Do you really find that great of deals on black friday? Even dealing with the crowds? Are we still doing Holidazzle weekend in the cities?

good evening, we had a swell time today.. the turkey turned out very tasty and tender.. the dressing also.. Annie made two lemon pies.. I made the gravy and mashed potatoes also.. I was going to make bread rolls, but I got lazy..

Annies sister came with DD#1 and her boyfriend.. Son's birthday today also.. couldn't come because the trip was too far for his SO.. she is having health issues.. DD#2 always goes to Antigo to her SO 's mother's ..

I watched a lot of football and did enough visiting to last me for awhile..

I tried sending photos of the trailer racks.. apparently I cannot send them directly off the camera card reader.. I guess I will have to figure out how to move them into a file..

the cluck got out of the pen with 3 of her 4 chicks.. and about 8 young guineas were sitting on top of the pen most of the day.. we caught all the guineas, but the hen avoided us.. we couldn't fine her at dusk, so she must have found a dark spot to spend the night.. prolly under the deck..

heard a lot of shooting today.. sounded to me like boredom shooting.. too many shots in a row to be actually shooting at something.. or else somebody made hamburger on the hoof..

I always hang my deer from the raised tractor bucket.. out in the yard. of course I don't live right smack in the center of a city, either.
You have to hang them where you can, I suppose..

I was elected, volunteered/told that I was going to Menard's, or was it F&F to get a couple of dog beds early in the morning..

Hey Vicky,

Got that pumpkin pie recipe yet??? How did you roast the pumpkins again and didn't you say you cooked the pie filling before you baked it ???
