With a little help from my friends - New Coop Under Construction!

If it is painted, in their climate, it'll be ok. (I checked with my builder person and that's the verdict) Since the exterior wood isn't meant for outside weather, I am assuming they plan to paint...actually I vaguely recall references to "paint" by the owner of the building.

For my climate, you are right and that's how I plan to build mine.

If your builder person told you it is alright to build like that I would be looking for a different builder person.
Paint will protect the wall but no amount of paint will stop the water from soaking sideways once the water hits the floor which is exposed out beyond the sidewall.

Sorry, we are going to have to agree to disagree, because I have SEEN paint protect wood ends on a lake front cabin. And if they add a bead of caulk before painting things will be fine.

OK, but for the sake of those who are reading this and planning to build they should know that if you build it right the first time you do not have to depend on caulk and paint to protect. In my opinion it is akin to leaving off the roofing and simply painting the roof, I'm sure you have seen this done as well, it will initially protect the roof but you will be out there repainting every other year.

Linda, wow, those are beautiful! To me they look like Cyn's Splash Ameraucana, Snow. Even though she's not Splash or pure Ameraucana... still...

Yup. He was my "accidental" roo in my first batch of "pullets." He's the father of my first GrandChick by Rebecca/EE, hatched by Buffy. And the father of Delilah Delaware's two daughters, hatched by Shirley Welsummer.

This is Red (I didn't name her), a rescue GLW given up by a friend's neighbor, with George Sebright in the picture. She didn't look that good when I got her...

Great looking chickens you have! And that coop is going to be great. I have one question I hesitate to bring up, and I don't know anything about your property lines, but if that little fence is a property line, could you build the coop that close to it? Around here we have to build everything like 12 to 20' back... anyway, enjoying the thread keep the pics coming!

Oh, no, that's just the fence for my back yard. I rent the "back" house on an acre of property; my landlady lives in the "front" house. My house is about two-thirds of the way back on that acre, which is open pasture for her 3 Barbados sheep. Because she is using all the available space in a shed next to the house I rent, she allowed me to build a shed in the pasture area, near the drive gate into my back yard. So the fence just keeps the sheep out of my back yard.

It's all good.

Well, while I'm waiting for this Wednesday's construction to continue, lemme share some nifty features which will be included:
Solar powered interior light (collector on exterior) which was found online as a "solar shed light."
Solar powered "attic vent/fan," also found online.
Several reproduction tin signs for the interior wall decorations
Lowe's gave me a ton o' free paint stirrer sticks, big and little ones. I am going to use 'em to make chicken tracks across the exterior walls, painting them contrasting colors so they look like REALLY big chickens have walked around on the walls.

Ii am still trying to figure out the most space conserving roost situation, maybe over nest boxes, with poop boards, or against a different wall. Hmmm. So many great examples all over BYC.
