We have a 6 ish week old bantam. I think he had developed spraddle leg syndrome, we have been using the band-aid trick around the ankle. It seems to have helped some. He is able to stand for a short spell and then he loses his balance with a tumble.

when he is picked up with his legs running full tilt you can sometimes hear a click like perhaps something is out of joint. When he sits often his butt is way up in the air and he has a hard time bending a leg.

I am looking for your thoughts for both diagnostics and treatment. I have considered culling as his life is well... not what it should be.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I have a RIR probably about 10 weeks old, his/her whatever leg is like that, she seems to walk on what I guess is her knee, as her foot is pretty well useless. She is one of my GGD pets and I do not have the heart to cull her. she is in excellent health other than the leg, she gets aound good on her 1 leg and knee, so as long is everything else is ok, she will be our special girl. marrie

I have felt around to the best of my ability. Everything seems to match from side to side but I can't say that I have examined a lot of chickens. Any insight what I may be looking for besides the obvious femure bone sticking way out.

I was also hoping that he may get his wings more involved to get around or maybe even fly around. Any thoughts?

The problem is that he can't get around really at all. I don't think the summersalts are intentional.

We had a chick with a similar problem and it turned out to be in the hip, not the knee area. His leg was turned out at the hip joint. We used the band-aid method for several weeks and them once he was able to walk around well enough on his own, we took it off. It eventually (somehow

) popped itself back into place. It looked like it was his knee because his leg was turned out at the hip and his leg bent differently. Not sure how to fix it though since his popped back in once he got a little older.

Sounds like a slipped tendon, or maybe just a plain deformity. I had a banty like that-- his legs seemed to be too long for his body, and the more he grew, the wobblier he got. Eventually he just couldn't keep up with the others and mostly just sat there hollering. He couldn't bend down to get a drink or eat without falling over, so we culled him.

This all happened in about one week's time.
