I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I was on here earlier this week posting about my chick Peaches. She wasn't acting like herself and I thought she had an impacted crop. She had many of the symtpoms and a buldge on her chest. I tried all the oil treatments and she didn't improve. I took her to the vet, she said it was just her breast bone sticking out. (None of my other chickens have this... But I will go with it right now because she is the expert...) the vet dr wormed her while we were there. I got her home, put her back out with others and she looked a little wobbly. I didn't think to much of it at the time. She had already had a rough day. I watched her a little longer and everything seemed fine. I went to work and when I got off she didn't run up to see me like she usually does. When I walked closer to her she tried to get up and fell back down. Then when she got up again she went backwards instead of forward. She finally was able to go forward and was very wobbly. Like she was drunk. I immediatly called the vet back thinking it was a reaction to the de wormer. They got her right back in. The vet watched her walk but assured me the wormer wouldn't do that. She gave me doxycycline mixed with vitamins which she is supposed to have 2 times a day for 3 days. The vet said she could have an inner ear infection or something like that... She said it could be neurological but she shows no other signs of anything being wrong. She seems a bit better today but still get really wobbly, off balance, and goes backwards. Not all the time, but sometimes. She is in the house getting extra special treatment. It's heartbreaking when the other happens tho. Has anyone else ever experienced this? What was the diagnoses and the outcome? Is there anything else I can do to help her?

Has the lump on her chest gone down? My money is on her having a reaction to the wormer. Why did the vet give her worm medication for an issue in her chest or crop? Is this an Avian vet? Time after time i come across posts/people saying that the vet wormed their chicken for something unrelated to worms, seems to me that for some vets the first course of action is give them worm medication whether they need it or not. Doxycyclene(tetracycline group) is used to treat infections in birds, hope this helps her.

Keep doing what you are, make sure she is drinking and eating.

The lump on her chest is a little better. It almost completely goes away when she holds her head up straight. Cervical spine (i'm pretty sure that's right) is what she said this what. Yes she is an avian vet. The reason she gave her the wormer was because she was a little underweight and a little pale. She said worms can do that them. At the point I took her to the vet I honestly didn't know what else to do. She has perked up quite a bit. Do you think the reaction from the wormer would have worn off right now? She said it wouldn't cause that.. But she was perfectly fine in that area before she was given the meds. She is eating and drinking normal. She been getting some extra treats lately as well. I was also told they could get low blood sugar. I know that wouldn't last this long. She told me if she wouldn't eat and would only drink to give her apple
Juice.. Have you ever heard of this? She tucked away right now all warm and cozy right now. I am doing all I can... But I feel like I am not doing enough... She doesn't like the new meds but the poor thing is getting them. :)

Worm medication is hard on chickens.Medications used for worms are powerful, they have to be,worms are hard to kill,it is basically a poison. There can be side effects from toxicity(dose too high, young bird, etc.),but if they have worms, they need medication. Just seems strange that your girl did not have this problem before worm medication. Toxic side effects,if not to severe do usually wear off anywhere from 2-5 days. I know in dogs one of the side effects from toxicity from a worm medication,is trouble standing. That is why my guess is the worm medication. I know apple juice can be used as a body cleanse, perhaps this is why your vet suggested it

I totally agree that it's strange she had NONE of those symptoms before she got the medicine. I still think it's a reaction to the drugs. She is so much better today! :) she only got a little wobbly once then quickly corrected herself unlike the first day when she could barely walk at all. I have very high hopes that she will pull through this. Although she now expects the extra Attention. But, as long as she continues to improve I am good with that. The wearing off of the drug with her has matched your timeline. I will post if anything else crazy happens in my little chicken world. :)

Excellent that she is starting to feel better. She is going to become one very spoiled little girl.
