Wolverines?

Quote:
I have heard there might be wolverines in Mich! Isn't that strange that Mich is called the Wolverine state when we have hardly any at all. They say we also have a population of mountain lions too and someone here is southwestern Mich has videotaped 3 of them together! I will check out that website you listed.

It's doubtful that either of you actually have a wolverine in your state. Probably some other member of the weasel family.
Wolverine habitat typically includes the Arctic mainland of Russia, Alaska, Canada, and Greenland.

I'm sorry if you don't believe me, but again, I direct you to wolverineguy.com or just google "wolverine in thumb of MI" and I'm sure you'll find the info on her. She is here, has been for awhile, they've caught pics of her on camera and video and the MI DNR is well aware of her but has no plans for her. No one really knows how she got here, whether she came down on an ice bridge from Ontario or someone tried to raise one illegally and released her. But, she is here all the same. Here's a link to one of the many articles on her. http://theoaklandpress.com/stories/022604/loc_20040226070.shtml. Sorry, I don't mean to high jack the post, I just came here to impress upon you that these creatures are illusive, not prove the existence of the one known MI wolverine!

I would have a problem with a Wolverine living near my child, but that's just me. Just imagine your kids tangling with it.

I have heard of this wolverine that was spotted in Mich. You know years ago I would thought you were crazy to see a coyote in the suburbs but I saw one walking my dog years ago and I thought I was seeing things untill the paper reported that coyotes were taking out local cats. Stranger things have happened. There is also a ungoing debate of mountain lions here in the midwest.

I too saw a program on Discovery Channel (?) about the wolverines returning to MI. They were able to show how they had migrated across frozen lakes from Canada.
The Coyote and Cougar populations are becoming a problem. Mostly because hunting them has become so demonized. In the Northwest dog hunting was banned for cougar and now farmers are loosing livestock and people are being attacked at an alarming rate. Its not habitat loss. Its poor management. A cougar will claim a very large territory and defend it to the death. When the young cats mature they have to find a new area. This usually means an area that has never seen big cats. Like town, or someones back yard. Almost all cat attacks on humans are from these youngsters trying to stake their territory.
The coyote population was kept under control through hunting and bounties. No hunting= too many. Too many coyotes means not enough other natural prey, turning them into livestock and pet killers.

My boyfriend saw a mountain lion a few summers back near our house. We also have black bear by us. Wolves are now back in the lower peninsula near Onaway. I saw a stuffed wolf at the welcome center in St. Ignace and it was huge, almost as tall as a Great Dane, though much broader. I actually saw a wolverine about a year-and-a-half ago but it was in a cage in the back of a pickup truck going down the highway. I thought it was an ugly, huge cat at first before I realized what it was. Not quite sure what someone would want with one other than the pelt or for research.
