Women in the military

No offense, I just had to get this off my chest. But that was really sexist.

Personally I don't think it matters whether you were built differently or not. Just go for whatever you want to do in life, whether you want to do stereotypical "womens work", "mens work", or not.

Not all guys need to be physically fit. Maybe he doesn't want to; or even need to.

But then, believe what you want.

I'm sorry, I am just speaking from personal experience is all.

Hey it's okay, believe what you want. Just don't over generalize.

I see, I see.

But still.

First; I'd like to start by saying I am a woman in the military. Army, specifically.

I fully believe that women belong in the military and that there should be no gender barrier for combat roles. Heck, they're essentially useless definitions anyway. There is no 'front line' anymore. Resupply between bases, mortaring of bases, whatever. Women see combat far more often than I think anyone realizes. They're just not in possitions where they are *typically* looking for that encounter. That being said; to be an actual door-kicking, action seeking Soldier I think there should be one set physical standard. If you can meet the requiement you can join that branch; male or female. No adjusting the scores male to female. If you are someone who can do 70 pushups in two minutes, run a 5 minute mile and achieve whatever other requirements there are; then you've proven your ability to keep up physically. I'll be the first to admit, not many women would achieve this. But if they can then they will also bring in another perspective to the units they are assigned to and there would be additional benifits when having to deal with female locals in many countries. There are a lot of benifits from integration. It can complicate things, but the advantages far outway those bumps in the road.

*edit for spellig

blah blah blah blah...... I will give my opinion in a minute but all I see is the same crap going round and round that I expected to happen when the OP started this topic. And yes I have been on since the OP started it. Just happened to have a baby crying, a mother crying, a father calling, and a brother apparently suicidal. By the time I got done with all that and had a minute to reply I seen everything I figured would be posted.

So lets start with this first for ALL of you:
Name:
Rank:
Branch of service:
Unit:
Time in service:
Combat experience:

I hear alot of hooplah being thrown around and figure it's the same thing as every other board and am guessing that my intuition is right on who has done what.

edit* added below

ps chick in the burbs hit the nail on the head.

pps uniforms should have one reason and one reason only: tactical advantage.

Hooplah? I felt that the conversation so far has been, for the most part, rational, reasonable discussion of a controversial issue. Does one need to be part of a group to have an opinion? That's all I was looking for - opinions and personal reasons, not facts and qualifications. Please, share with us your opinion!

Absolutely I think women should be in the military, and in combat.
Anything else is a violation of rights. Just like no other type of soldier should be excluded.
That said, they should meet the requirements for the role, and if not, another position is in order.

The 'distraction' IMO, is not a viable defense. If the fellers or ladies don't have the training and professionalism to ignore such a thing, they shouldn't be serving where they're serving. Men in combat would be encountering women often enough anyway.. through the towns they move through, their fellow troops in the other aspects and such. If they can be non-emotional about enemy women and children carrying explosives, they can be non-emotional about their fellow officer being in danger. If they can't, then the *men* shouldn't be in that line of duty.

For the professionalism, they should see it as a test of strength... a chance to buck up and not act like a little toddler who only thinks about their *ahem*.

Just like I think all kinds of men and women should be allowed to serve in any respect they are capable of serving. For all the reasons, and with all the stipulations, above.

All that said.. I can't imagine a huge number of women being able or desiring to meet the requirements... but if they are able, there is no justifiable reason to deny them the right.

People coming to understand things like this though, takes time. We have already done away with so many things that have caused the suffering and bondage of the most cruely treated portion of humanity. People now like to just forget that not only were women denied basic freedom and rights, they have endured that for longer than any other group of humans ever has. I have no doubt that the last traces of egotistical ignorance are well on the way out the window on this subject, so I'm not too concerned about it right now. Otherwise I'd be on a corner with a picket.

Just waiting on a female president.

Hope you do well with your paper.

ETA - I don't believe being a member of the military has anything to do with being able to express an opinion on the subject. We are Americans. Even if we aren't serving, our relatives & friends may well do, and our children may. Those in DC aren't all members of the military, yet they make decisions for all everyday. This is OUR country, after all.
