Hi Everyone,

I wanted to introduce myself. My father, Jim Mortensen (also known as Woodmort), was an avid chicken enthusiast and posted here often. He died on April 29th from complications from the coronavirus.

I am now trying to do maintenance of his chickens to help out my mom. One thing that is desperately needed is to clean out the coop, so I will be looking for articles here on how to do that, and what to do in the coop after removing the waste. Any tips you can give would be greatly appreciated, too.

For years I've been enjoying the eggs my Dad has so generously shared with me. Now I'm looking forward to learning about how to care for his funny and delightful birds.

I didn't "know" your Dad online, but through the messages I've read here over the past month or so, I sure do wish I'd had the chance. He really enjoyed his birds, and touched many people here on BYC. I hope you continue to join in, here. This is a phenomenally supportive community and I honestly feel privileged to be art of it. For coop cleanout, do wear either a N95 face mask (hard to find right now!) or a respirator. Inhaling that dust is BAD.

Greetings and welcome, Sigrid. So very sad for the loss of your dad...especially from this horrible pandemic. Hugs to you!
Look for the "Deep Litter Method" on the forums. It requires less maintenance than others, in our experience, and keeps a healthy environment for your birds.
I would think, were I you, that Dad was watching and smiling at your work. I always thought that about my parents after they died.
