Worm Treatment Results - Drinking a lot of Water Still

Thanks you for the dose amounts, very very helpful and I will make a note for future reference.

I also just picked up Eprinex Ivomec Pour-On. I thought it would be easier going forward to administer vs. orally administering to each bird.
Pour On will treat lice/mites but it's not that effective in treating intestinal parasites - it may still treat Roundworms. It is still dosed and administered by weight!

Most all anthelmintic doses are based on weight - each is different. It's not hard to give each bird their oral dose when giving Safeguard or Valbezen. I draw up doses and have them ready. Go out early when chickens are roosting. Grab a hen off the roost, give her the meds, then set her down. Go to the next and so on.

The only difference between Pour On is you would apply the liquid to the base of the neck along the spine - it must come into contact with the skin. It's repeated in 10 days.

Treat your hen's crop issue. See if she improves.

What's her poop like now?
Does she lay eggs?

I would absolutely start treating her for Sour Crop. Follow the instructions in the link below and make sure that you give the yeast cream twice a day for a full 7 days.
Up to you whether you want to re-do the Safeguard. If you do, then I would still give the yeast cream - get on top of the crop issue before it gets worse.

Are worms at the root of the problem? Could be, could be something else - looking at your other thread you haven't had these hens for very long, so you don't really know their "history".
I would work on the crop issue for sure, de-worming again probably won't hurt.
Most of her poop the past few days have been foamy and green/yellowish with the occasional normal looking poop which gave me hope. She pooped this morning (Pic taken before coop was cleaned) and it was loose again not as foamy with good solids some white on top, was a lot. Both are attached!

It's hard to tell if she is laying but I feel confident in saying no, I'd put money on it all day long. I am out there a lot and I've never seen her in the box, nor my kids, I've seen other 3 in there plenty.

I felt her crop again this morning, was much smaller than LN but still squishy so I induced vomiting again and she threw up a lot and boy was it rank, there is no doubt she has sour crop. At one point what looked like a long piece of straw was coming out, I tried to maneuver to grab it and pull out but that fast she sucked it back down and I didn't want to traumatize her any longer. Just after putting her down, she poop which looks like mostly liquid.

I ordered the Monistat coming today and will administer TN. I isolated her today with just water, no food.

Yes I've had these hens 5 weeks now, 3 including the troubled hen all bought from one farm which looks like all 3 have scaly leg mites as well I am trying to deal with. That is my mistake didn't do my homework when buying them. It's very possible she don't have worms at all and it's been the crop issue all along. Possible even bought her like this. I was just too new at owning/caring for chickens I didn't pick it up. She has always seems to keep to herself from day 1, kind of isolates herself from the rest of the bunch and is often times getting picked on.

Cannot thank you enough for your help and everyone else's!

There are 7,000 different threads here on BYC about giving Safe-guard orally.

In order to dose a bird properly you need to know how much the bird weighs.
How much does she weigh today?

Show me a few please? Thanks! Many are contradictory and give different info really hard to narrow it down.

All 5,022 websites I read (not BYC) say to give in water. Here are few that lead me down the path.....No clue what she weighs today, I'd have work on that.

Is she fairly active overall?
Provide your ladies with grit (crushed granite) free choice.

I would work on resolving the crop issue if possible. If you feel that worms are part of the problem, then I would give her (in addition to treating with the yeast cream!) Safeguard at a dose of .23ml per pound of weight once a day for 5 days.

Crop issues can be from a number of things - sometimes underlying conditions like reproductive disorders, worms, infection, impaction, etc. She's not laying eggs but I would be hesitant to go to reproductive disorder at this time. BO's are not that prolific and she's had a change in her world. 5 wks...she may still need time to adjust. Of course you're going by the seller's age of the bird as well. She may be older/younger.

You're doing fine. Water is good. If you think she does need a bit of food, I would give only wet soaked layer feed and just a small amount. But withholding food for a day can sometimes help.

Once again thank you so much for your help and info, I am going to give it my best shot with her.

She is fairly active! She eats, drinks, poos, but you can tell she kinda keeps to herself, most times but not always off to the side away from flock. Sometimes mixed right in with them. Prior when giving them treats she would come in for some but she is kinda off to the side or in the back. I always tried to make sure she got some, but soon as she tries to get some food the others pick on her. She will not eat out of my hand like the others do, even when I let them out to free range, she stays in the run most of time and I try to spend time with her and hand feed her but won't take it

You make great points, not sure what her environment was prior. Was an indoor run, looked well kept and clean but who knows the age or history of her. We got her and much changed. I am sure its different feed we give, we probably gave them more treats they ever got prior and that could have upset her as well. She could have ate something in the run that was floating around the yard. We often find all kinds of weird stuff back there. Plenty of grit out there and I also provide some for them well in a bowl and sprinkle around the run.

I plan on giving her some food like you mentioned when I come home this afternoon, some soaked layer feed.

Thanks again!!!

You have some questions. I do understand the whole Fenbendazole (Safeguard) thing is a bit confusing.
Personally, instead of trying to figure it all out - I direct oral dose my birds with either Safeguard (Fenbendazole) or Valbazen (Albendazole) this way I "know" they have recieved the correct meds and there's no worrying whether they ate/drank enough for it to be effective. That's my take.

Some folks DO give the liquid goat wormer in water and seem satisfied with the results. Some DO make a mash as well.

Now, I'll add to your confusion a bit more since you asked:lol:

A couple of years ago Safeguard introduced an "aquasol" version which is intended to be administered in the drinking water. The dosing of that at 1mg/kg treats roundworms only. With this dose there is also no withdrawal (throwaway) period for eggs so it's ideal to use in commercial/large production settings. Aquasol is expensive (about $300+).

In the first link you provided - the article is confusing at best. 2 times it touts Aquasol, but then it also mentions the Liquid Goat Dewormer. Fenbendazole is Fenbendazole as far as the "active ingredient" and effectiveness, but the Aquasol is designed not to settle out of water where the goat dewormer will.

How much Safeguard do you give chickens?

Safe-Guard ® AquaSol must be administered orally to chickens via the drinking water at a daily dose of 1 mg/kg BW (0.454 mg/lb) for 5 consecutive days.

Again, this one is a bit misleading and I assume the author is confused about which "product" they are talking about. They have the goat dewormer in a photo further in the article BUT If you click on their link for Drugs.com - it takes you to Safeguard Aquasol.

Can You Use Safeguard on Chickens?

Safe-Guard is safe for use with chickens. There have been numerous clinical studies, as detailed on Drugs.com, and it’s proven to be effective at killing worms while being safe to use.

In this thread, it's LONG! On the first page it's discussed giving it orally at the dose I gave you. Again, just skimming further into that thread at post #4 The Aquasol is being discussed. This leads to confusion since it's Fenbendazole (Safeguard). So as you read on, I am going to "assume" it's not really specified which one is being used.

On this one, I just skimmed the first 2 pages. Even though the Title of the thread says Safeguard, the discussion on the first 2 pages is about Ivomec it seems. The thread is 11 years old, so I'm not sure if all the quotes/info is still there?
https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...kens-with-goat-safeguard-fenbendazole.423896/

I understand your confusion and frustration. BYC has a lot of very good information whether old or new, but it may be worth looking at dates on threads to see how old they are, then search newer threads to see if information has changed. Sometimes as time goes by products change or we may get better information about dosing, etc.

We all are here to learn and help one another. We may not always get it right, but we try.
You are doing just fine. You've got this!!:hugs

Thank you so much for taking that time. I am learning a TON from yourself and from BYC. This place is awesome, TONS of info about everything. Yes a bit confusing only because I am so new at all the terminology and different things that go into caring for chickens. But I am getting there, thanks to folks like you and BYC........Right back atcha :hugs

Also note that treats take away from getting a balanced diet. I see you just mentioned that you feed a lot of treats. Stop. A balanced diet of ONLY commercial made age appropriate feed is better.
Treats can lead to over weighness extremely fast and that in itself can cause laying issues that can be deadly.

Treats should be no more that a small tablespoon worth per bird. If you feed anything more than a tablespoon worth you are feeding too much.
