I had the bright idea that building a worm bed would help supplement my flocks addiction to food. I did a little research on the topic and can start a bed of meal worms 1000 count for about 30 bucks... Is this a good idea or should it go to the tin hat folder and me move onto bigger and better things? any suggestions on this?

I can't give you personal experience but was just reading an article on just this exact thing, and am considering doing just the same. It was in Countryside magazinie but unfortunately it's not on their website. I think it's a great idea. Worms are so prolific and with minimal work you'll have a great protein source for your hens.

I can't remember who here had a meal worm starter plan, but they are easy to keep. You can raise them in old feed that you wouldn't feed to the chickens. Most feed stores around here will give you or charge next to nothing for bags of feed that has gone bad in their store.
I use an old bath tub with a lid, which works for me. A friend uses a metal thrssh can. Your choice.

I just ordered a starter kit myself. I've purchased both live and freeze-dried meal worms for my chickens, and have often thought about breeding my own meal worms for them. I recently got a baby African Pygmy Hedgehog that also eats insects, so now I figured the kit was definately the way to go!
