Worming chickens..........

OK. this is all new to me. Chicken NEWBE here.

First
what is DE

Second.
Where do you get all these "dewormers" the Vet, or the Farm store such as TSC?

Sorry for such dumb questions, but I keep reading DE and what not, and I search for an Answer, and only find More statements to use it.

Thanks in advance
Joe

Oh wow, thanks. I am going to start doing this, I already use DE with my chickens, been using it for years for both inside and out on my dogs..lol. I am going to have to change a couple of waterers though, they are metal....so I can do the ACV.

Ok, I'm showing that post to my health nut, tree huggin' hubby who refuses to worm the chickens because "it's not natural". (Me in response:

DE is short for Diatomaous Earth...I'm sure I spelled that wrong..lol. It is skeleton remains of diatoms. You can mix it with their food, and it helps with worms and protozoans. Tossed under the roost it helps keep the flies and smell down.

I feed it to my dogs to kill worms, and dust them in it to kill fleas. Just don't breath in the stuff, which is hard to do if it is windy, face mask or bandana over the nose helps with this....I am also careful when dusting the dogs, to make sure it's not on too heavy and work it into their coat... so they don't breath it in.

Hey guys!

I just wanted to let everyone know that TAPEWORMS do not show up on a fecal test. I don't think it is very common knowledge so I thought I'd share my experience.

I had chickens wasting away with no other symptoms and kept thinking that it was worms, but I brought in two separate samples from all over the yard and the vet kept saying "NO WORMS". Finally, I SAW worms in the poop. I KNEW they had worms darn it! I posted pics on BYC and everyone here helped me diagnose. I love BYC!

Anyway, parasite eggs typically float in liquid, but tapeworm "eggs" are heavy and sink and don't show up on the fecal "float" test. Chickens get tapeworms from eating beetles, worms and snails that are infested. Apparently, DE is not effective with tapeworms, but I don't know about Cayenne pepper. I'm sure it won't hurt.

This description is an oversimplification, but I thought I'd share this info in case it might be helpful to anyone.

I hope that Glenda & the rest of you can help me plan the best strategy for my flock.

I had seen some roundworm-laden poops in the coops, so today I gave all my layers, my ducks, guineas & geese Wazine-treated water. Just as directed, took away the water last night, set out the medicated water this morning, & refilled their pans as needed. I found a few more wormy poops this afternoon.

The feed store where I got the Wazine had a sign posted by it saying to discard the eggs for 96 hours afterwards. Apparantly that's the word they got from the company. What do you all think about that? I need to sell the eggs to pay for the feed, I want to discard as few eggs as I must.

OK, now what should I do next? Glenda, you've been recommending DE, cayenne pepper, & yogurt. Please advise me in what to give & when to give it, and for how long.

I was also given some Ivomec Eprinex, Pour-on for Beed & Dairy Cattle (eprinomectin). I'd like to use that as a follow-up, when should I apply that? The box says "...meat & milk from cattle treated with this may be used for human consumption at any time following treatment..." Can we conclude that meat & eggs from chickens treated with this are also safe, with no withdrawal or discard time?

And then after that, should I again offer yogurt, and continue to add cayenne pepper &/or DE? I really appreciate everyone's imput, thank you!

Is it possible to track down some pictures of any of the afore-mentioned worms in the poop so that I can see what to look for..?

Are they really visible, as in quite big? Will you definitely see worms in the poop if your chickens have worms, or not necessarily? Will they be moving?

Do the worms die right away after being eliminated, so do you have to "catch" the most recent poop?

Thanks!!!
