I never raised another hog after one pulled all my "curious" pygmy kids through the wire and ate them. I guess better/smaller wire would've prevented the little buggers from putting their heads where they didn't belong.I've raised and bred hogs long ago. I didnt know boar teats counted for something lol. However the sows we raised had several litters of 10 to 12 piglets at a time. After awhile we had to cut the tushes out of the piglets mouth so the piglets wouldnt cut the sows teats with the tushes and continue sucking the sows milk. Mama hogs didnt like us taking their babies away to cut their tushes and had to put sows in separate "strong" pens. The piglets squealing drove the sows nuts.
We had to clean the blood off the piglets after cutting the tushes or the sow would kill and eat them. We never lost a piglet. Still born piglets were eaten by the sow as well as after birth.
Next to chickens, raising hogs is very easy. I'd say easier than chickens honestly. However, feeding hogs is costly nowadays. They are escape artists also. Hotwire works best.
I always helped with first time deliveries also. I wont go into detail, abit graphic for younguns.
That's sad. I learned that lesson too. A Duroc sow stuck her head through the wire and bit the head off one of the hens. It's true, I SAW the hen running around with its head cut off, blood spurting out its neck while running around til it finally flopped down and died. Lesson learned. Shortly after I had hot wire installed just inside the hog pen all the way around. No problems afterwards.I never raised another hog after one pulled all my "curious" pygmy kids through the wire and ate them. Ain't that the truth! I had to hear the babies bawling while they were being eaten, that did it for me! I do like my goats though. Poor stupid chicken just got too close. That's sad. I'm sticking with chickens, getting too old to mess around with hogs or other livestock.
