Would a hawk kill a full size chicken?

And back on topic, yes, hawks can and do kill chickens regularly. Of all sizes. What they can't carry they eat on the ground.

So everyone agrees that a hawk will take a chicken if given the opportunity. Take away the opportunity and you solve the problem. I have an open pen for my girls and roo, I have strung lines across it from near by trees and the coop itself and I hang CD's from the lines on string about 2-3 feet long so any slight air movement will cause them to spin and scare away any predator either in the air or on the ground and with just a little moonlight at might they work equally as well then also. So, if your kids have any heavy metal CD's or Rap music from some Rap Gangsta, raid them and hang them to stand guard over your hens,put them to a real good use.

I lost my RIR Rooster who's name was Hulk. 8 lbs and over 2 yrs old.
He died fighting a hawk( Red Tail) Kids saw it happen.
I hear the hawk died shortly after, ...........from lead poisoning.

time and the number of post seem to indicate the single biggest killer of any chickens large or small is the owners decision to free range them over the safety of their birds. They all seem to have these cutsy little barbie doll coops and names for all the chickens who they say they love then kill them on purpose through........... well........... not making the best choices.

Sorry folks just really tired of seeing a thread that says..... Ohhh Myyy a hawk killed my chickens and in the next sentence low and behold it say's I free range my chickens unsupervised . I would love to free range my birds but they are way to valuable to me than Hatchery stock mutts and therefore I choose not to kill them by looking past the gravey train that looks at them from the fence line. If you love them as much as you want everybody to think you do, then spend a nickle or two and safeguard them. Sure their nice in pictures, but not so nice in a shoe box.

Enough allready with the free range hawk attacks, it's taking up server space.

I appologize in advance to the Mod's, just stating the obvious.

I have a Sparrow hawk who take pigeons feeding in my garden nearly every week. Plucks them on the lawn & makes a right mess.

They are not very big hawks so i hope they wont have a go at my hens when i get them.

OH my yes! I posted pictures of one in my pen! It isn't very big, but it got both my bantams.

Today we saw 2 hawks out hunting-redtails- they were huge! Large enough they could carry one of my Orpington roos off if they wanted.

Darn Predators!!! Now, when I want my flock to free range I have to go stand guard. Can only let them out for an hour at a time. Hate that 'cause they love freerangin'

I had a pair of hawks work on my flock of barred rocks over a year period. They would have gotten them all I suppose if the neighbors dog hadn't went berserk towards the end.

Mostly they would eat them on the ground but once got one up into a tree. The remains, skin mostly, hung there for weeks, a sad reminder. Then they would take off for a few weeks with no sign of them. I built several plywood shelters for the chickens to hide under. And they did use them all the time.

It was kinda comical one day when I was back there feeding them. One of those big blue herons flew over and they ran for cover.
