Would someone please calm me down before I flip my lid...

If you go to an old neighborhood hardware store, look for a spray that contains chloropyrofos. It used to be sold under the trade name of "Dursban." You can spray it around the outside of your home (window frames, doors, etc.) and it will kill the critters that try to invade your home. It has a little odor, but I've even used it inside the home around the base boards, behind the fridge and stove, etc. If you have cats or dogs in the house, you should take them outside before treating and keep them out until the spray is dry. If you have fish tanks, turn off the filters and air pumps, cover the entire unit with a drop cloth. BIRDS MUST BE TAKEN OUT AND KEPT OUT UNTIL ALL SPRAY IS DRY AND THE ODOR HAS GONE! Avian lungs (parrots, etc.) are too delicate for even the odor!
Once the spray is dry, inside or out, it cannot be reactivated to harm your pets.
You more than likely brought that solitary critter into your home in something, but this spray will last for about 60 days without retreat so that if you happen to have others, they will be killed off as well.
Hope that this information helps you.

I hope to God I only had that one.

I was cleaning and dumed out a rubbermaid tote onto the floor of stuff to sweep up and toss and it came running out like a bat outta hell.
Even my 8 year old yelled "It's a ROACH!"
I didn't think so at first, but once I squashed it and took a close look, I nearly fainted.

I have only seen them in person on one occasion where a friend of mine lived in an apartment building and went from seeing one here and there to thousands in a couple of weeks. I remember visiting her years ago during the infestation and being so grossed out the whole time but it wasn't her fault, her neighbors were slobs, not her.
It was so bad they were crawling around inside the microwave and inside the oven lights, you could see them from the outside.
She had to move becuase the landlord wouldn't treat it and her baby developed asthma from the roach poop I think or something like that...

Still gives me the shivers thinking about it.

Don't ya know that cockroaches are a food source in China. All god's creatures serve a useful purpose, those cockroaches are food for small snakes and birds. Now don't you feel bad for squishing them.

Y'all know I am teasing I hope, I just couldn't resist.

Yuck! I hate roaches with a fiery passion. I like all other bugs, reptiles, arachnids. But roaches make me scream like a girl - big time!

As you have kids at home I would be careful about what poisons you use. Don't spray poison on yarn, that would be a big safety risk. Put it in a plastic bag and stuff them in your freezer for a couple of weeks

The boric acid is a good idea. Don't feel like the roach is a reflection of your cleaning, the stupid things eat the adhesive off of wallpaper among other things.

Oh my, thank goodness you don't live in Florida!! We have BIG roaches here. Palmetto bugs. I have seen some that are at least 3 inches long, I swear! Oh yeah, the flying roaches are fun, too. Especially when they fly AT you!!!!!!!!!!

I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate roaches, but I also know they are a part of living in a warm, humid environment. I just keep everything as clean as possible, and if one happens to come in to "visit" you can bet I get it sprayed asap!!

They are incredibly yucky! Good luck getting rid of them. Be careful of the poison that you use though, especially if you have kids and pets.

In lieu of Boric acid you can use Borox in the laundry section, if that makes you feel safer. I use jelly and Borox to kill ants and it's the most effective ant killer that I've ever seen.
