Would someone please calm me down before I flip my lid...

First of all...take a deep breath. In...out...odds are that it came from a paper bag or box from the store. They are notorious for spreading them. You need to go through your cabinets and under furniture, fridge, etc. Just do a good wipedown with chlorox wipes, or whatever disinfectant you have handy.

If you haven't seen any others, it was probably just a hitchhiker. Have you been shopping recently?

Shelly

Are you kidding? I shop all the time. I also have been taking in alot of donations of yarn lately for my Non-Profit Org that my husband and I are starting...

Oh god, I feel really sick

I dont want to add fuel to your fire but roaches are not the only thing you have to worry about when taking in donations. Bed bugs are an increasing problem. a word of advise keep things that are donated in a plastic garbage bag to kill all the critters that may be tagging along

Cripes!!! I feel for you I hate bugs all bugs.... my skin crawls as I type.....I hope you solve your "problem" jeesh...yak.... my daughter had Australian Tree Frogs and had to feed them live crickets, as the frogs grew so did the size of the crickets you had to feed them with, she was lax and did not worry if any dropped on the floor, she did not squish em.... nope one day i was typing away when this huge cricket was sitting there on the comp table watching me.... I completely freaked out..... the frogs went that day, I sold them to a Pet Store.... result no more escaping crickets. I feel your pain!

I agree with other posters, be very very wary of what you bring into your home through donations, especially donated books, you would not believe what can live amongst the pages

you can take the donations in but make sure you place all items in a plastic bag or wash them in hot soapy water.

my son just moved home again and i was uptight about the bug issue so we went and bought lunch and took all this stuff to a laundry mat and washed ALL of his things...and called it a working lunch date...lol

During the winter, you could just leave the bags outside and let anything that may be living freeze.

Make a mixture of DE and Boric acid (Borax) put it in a shaker or some other method and get it in every crevice and crack in the whole house.
Make sure you get it in behind light sockets, switches, and wall outlets. for some reason Germans and most other roaches like the be near electrical wiring.

They like to be dry and warm but also near food and water so make sure you get the powder mixture under the sinks and behind baseboards.

DE and Borax is not a fast acting killer. It gets on their feet and legs. Roaches are very clean bugs and the clean themselves reguarly, they will ingest the DE and borax and eventually die.

If you want fast acting- get concentrated malithion or pyrethrines from your localplant nursery along with a cheap pump sprayer. mix up the stuff, pump it up and spray every crack and crevice in the house. be careful around electrical, I'd stick with the powder there.
Pyrethrines are made from flowers and are less toxic than other chemicals if you have pets.

It takes about a week for the egg sacks to hatch so you have to keep up the spraying every two weeks.
