Would these actually be EE's or Ameraucanas?

Hi all,

I've just been reading through the breed identification forum, mostly just to look at pictures because I'm getting so impatient about our own. On an older thread, someone mentioned that Ameraucanas are never colourful, and that someone's hen or rooster they had posted was actually an Easter Egger. I have searched the archives somewhat to try and find the answer to my question, but I'm more confused now.

We've ordered Ameraucanas from a local breeder, and she told me that "the Ameraucanas are a coloured flock, not a show line" and also that "Ameraucanas are sometimes all one colour (especially if they are show birds) so they might come in white, black, blue , wheaton, etc. Mine are not used for showing so they are in many different colours which I love for looking at. " She also said they all lay blue eggs. I don't really care either way, I prefer the more colourful ones too, so mostly just curious. Is it something I would have to wait until I get them to know for sure?

Thanks!

This is the standard for the breed Ameraucana, in the first link below; show line or not, they still must conform to the standard to be considered Ameraucana. I don't know what the breeder meant by a "coloured flock". There are only 8 colors of true Ameraucana. Is she mixing colors? Not sure what purpose that would have, but would have to see pictures of her birds to really say much. She may have an Easter Egger flock and an Ameraucana flock separate and be selling from both. I know some people do that.

Here are the accepted colors of Ameraucana in pictures:

Those links should help.

Ameraucanas ARE colorful, people just tend to say that when they have EE's and couldn't care less for anything else. Often when one gets what they thought are Ameraucanas, then learns they aren't, they get into this phase of negative thinking on real Ameraucanas. Often Easter Egger colors are just mixed versions of Ameraucanas, and in reality, most EE's are very restricted in colors. Most EE's are simply duckwing based, while Ameraucanas can come in Wheaten, Blue Wheaten, White, Blue, Splash, Silver, Black, Buff, Lavender and even Brown-Red.

However, if someone breeds an "Ameraucana flock for color, not show" - That signifies they're EE's. If they appear brown in the females and black and gold, red and black, or black and white in the males, those are red flags for being Easter Eggers. Most local "breeders" just have Easter Eggers, but still call them Ameraucanas because that's what the hatcheries said they are.

I myself have a local "breeder" nearby who clearly has Easter Eggers, yet advertises that they breed "rare colors" of Ameraucanas, and they even list the real, recognized colors to convince people, yet NONE of their birds are those colors.

Thank you both! That's good to know. As I said, I don't really care either way, as long as they lay colourful eggs and look pretty.

She was very upfront about it and her birds look really healthy and she's been extremely helpful (above and beyond helpful, really). Good to be aware that they are probably considered EE's here though for when I get them.

I've had a peek through the links and will definitely come back to have a better look, especially at the scrapbook one.

I have a friend who bought what was sold as pure Amercauna's and when she showed me I told her they were ee's. She trusted the seller. I am not sure if perhaps the seller just didn't know or not. But they are clearly ee's. Nothing wrong with either type of bird its just if someone sells me salmon it better darn well be salmon not trout. Both are good fish but clearly two different types of fish.
Ee's are easier to come by, good quality Amercaunas are not. Trust me been looking for long time and hatching eggs they have flaws which are not what I am looking for.
