I would do a google search of the company. track owner names and co owners. id look into bbb, oh, and ask to see a copy of their title to legally run the company, their businesd licence and do a search on that. if they are on the up and up they should not make you feel in any way uncomfortable. before doing so, call the police and let them know. if it id a sting which moves, they will be out before the authorities get there. they are gast and organized and pretty savy. they know how to get the right people for the job, whom they can string along, edpecially in this economy, and how to sugar coat to squeeze more free work. if you and your co workers do not get full pay with the first check, report them to the police first,
labor board second, before they scatter

I think she is working for a place that is newly opened.. I can understand, Things not being quite in order, right away..
It should not happen again once she starts the payroll.. Is she useing a payroll company?

The $50.00 could be down on books as an advance, on pay.

And if she's doing payroll sounds like they will take off right taxes!!!

I would not work till I got paid.I had a SIL that went months without full pay.She and others finally quit and had to sue to get SOME of their pay.
