Wow, that is really bad!
Looks like fly strike! You need to treat that immediately or the hen's life will be in danger.
She had a wound that most likely became infected, then, attracted a fly, which promptly laid eggs. Maggots will hatch soon, if they have not already. At least that is what the photo looks like to me.
Either way, treat now.
I hope this helps.
- Isolate the hen in a hospital cage. Away from any flies!
- Soak the leg in Epsom Salt bath for at least 10 minutes.
- Dry the area thoroughly, you can use a blow dryer on low.
- Spray the wound with Vetricyn Spray, or a solution of Betadine & water, or salt water.
- Do not wrap or cover with bandage. And no ointments. Keep clean and dry!
- You will have to perform this treatment at least two times a day, 3 would be better.
- You will have to do this till the wound heals.
- Take to a Vet if you can, if not be consistent in the treatments.
