Wound on foot??

Wow, that is really bad!

Looks like fly strike! You need to treat that immediately or the hen's life will be in danger.

She had a wound that most likely became infected, then, attracted a fly, which promptly laid eggs. Maggots will hatch soon, if they have not already. At least that is what the photo looks like to me.

Either way, treat now.

  • Isolate the hen in a hospital cage. Away from any flies!
  • Soak the leg in Epsom Salt bath for at least 10 minutes.
  • Dry the area thoroughly, you can use a blow dryer on low.
  • Spray the wound with Vetricyn Spray, or a solution of Betadine & water, or salt water.
  • Do not wrap or cover with bandage. And no ointments. Keep clean and dry!
  • You will have to perform this treatment at least two times a day, 3 would be better.
  • You will have to do this till the wound heals.
  • Take to a Vet if you can, if not be consistent in the treatments.
I hope this helps.

Now, take care of your little girl.

God Bless :)

I will try this treatment... but no flies they are on a screened in patio

Does she have a sore on the top of the foot too - photos?
Any photos of her housing?
Has she ever had any respiratory illness?
Does she move around o.k. or does she lay about?

I'm not exactly sure what that is - you can try soaking in chlorhexidine, diluted betadine or epsom salts to help cleanse and soothe it. Apply triple antibiotic ointment or Vetericyn to the sore. Do your best to keep the bedding as dry as possible.

We have been battling a respiratory funk....I’ve been using vet extensively too and still can’t shake this respiratory junk.

Personally, I do not think this looks like flystrike. It could lesions from Mycoplasma Synoviae or possibly even rupture from slipped tendon - you don't mention whether she has difficulty walking or not. Treatment would generally be the same though - soaking/cleansing the wound and applying a triple antibiotic ointment/vetericyn. Wrapping the wound may be needed to help keep it clean if she is sitting around a lot. You may want to give her a boost by providing poultry vitamins that contain E and B vitamins or use human B-Complex vitamins (no iron).

Re-consulting your vet to see if there is any testing they can do or to see if they have a different medication recommendation is always best.

I’ll try all the above... but they r on a screened in patio so no flies in there. Not sure how she got this but will try to treat the best way I can

I would also inform the breeder you got the chicks from, respiratory symptoms showing up 2 days after receiving, they already had been "infected". You've gotten good advice, can't add to it but following to learn what is happening to that foot & hoping they all get better soon.
