Ouch! That looks like a significant sore. I am sorry I don’t know what it is, but it seems soaking and antibiotic ointment would help. It almoat looks like those seed things have burst through the skin. Is that how it looks in person? Sorry not to be of more help.

Does she have a sore on the top of the foot too - photos?
Any photos of her housing?
Has she ever had any respiratory illness?
Does she move around o.k. or does she lay about?

I'm not exactly sure what that is - you can try soaking in chlorhexidine, diluted betadine or epsom salts to help cleanse and soothe it. Apply triple antibiotic ointment or Vetericyn to the sore. Do your best to keep the bedding as dry as possible.

Wow, that is really bad!

Looks like fly strike! You need to treat that immediately or the hen's life will be in danger.

She had a wound that most likely became infected, then, attracted a fly, which promptly laid eggs. Maggots will hatch soon, if they have not already. At least that is what the photo looks like to me.

Either way, treat now.

  • Isolate the hen in a hospital cage. Away from any flies!
  • Soak the leg in Epsom Salt bath for at least 10 minutes.
  • Dry the area thoroughly, you can use a blow dryer on low.
  • Spray the wound with Vetricyn Spray, or a solution of Betadine & water, or salt water.
  • Do not wrap or cover with bandage. And no ointments. Keep clean and dry!
  • You will have to perform this treatment at least two times a day, 3 would be better.
  • You will have to do this till the wound heals.
  • Take to a Vet if you can, if not be consistent in the treatments.
I hope this helps.

Now, take care of your little girl.

God Bless :)

Dang that looks so very painful ... Looks like infection spreading through the foot, having started from an injury. What kind of The advice given are good but the best advise is getting it to a Vet if at all possible. Keep us updated.

We have been battling a respiratory funk I gave the new babies 5 days of tylan 50, min/vit/elec in water as well as added a high protein chick crumble to Chick feed. I’ve been using vet extensively too and still can’t shake this respiratory junk. They are on my screened in back patio so no flies. Bedding stays clean and dry. They are so small so I have them in a good sized rabbit cage.

I got 4 Little’s and I’ve had them about 3weeks now. The respiratory stuff came 2 days of having them and infected 2 of them, I treated as stated above they healed and then the other 2 got it And I did the same but my Cochin still has the respiratory coughing and now the 2 little polish seem to have mild symptoms again and then I noticed this on her foot really besides myself at this point. Need these chicks to be healthy!!
