A couple weeks ago one of my pullets got scalped. The flesh was still attached in one area so I attempted to get the flap of meat to graft back into position. I thought it had worked but it definitely did not. Instead of grafting the flesh healed and became like a limb sticking out of her head. And it's grown much larger than it was. It had been laying down flat as if the graft had worked but now it's sticking up like an extra comb. It looks pretty terrible and her beak is turning black. These are the best pictures that I could get it looks like she has a balloon of flesh growing off her head. I think the blood is from it being pecked at not from the wound reopening.

Should I try to cut it off her or what?

Oops forgot the pictures

Anyone? It seems to me I should try to cut it off but this is a pullet that took a liking to my son so she has a bit of importance to her so I don't want to act too hasty. A vet is not an option where I live.

What if you tie something on it so tight that it falls off on its own?

I wouldn’t feel comfortable telling you to cut it off without better pictures.

I spent about an hour trying to get a better picture. She's very finicky right now. Every time she moves it flops to the side and then she twitches nervously. The flap was the original top of her head, it is now like a balloon of flesh I can't let her be near other chickens with it because it's peck bait. Only one side of it (less than a quarter of the perimeter of it) is attached to her head, the rest is this bulbous mass of flesh. Grafting it to her head is no longer a possibility because it healed all the way around. Before I retired I worked on trauma medicine and I've never seen or heard of anything like this.

As long as it’s hanging you should be able to cut it off without a problem. I’d keep her separate afterwards for awhile.

It's likely it abscessed but the build up had no where to go and made this hard lump instead of bursting. That, or it's some kind of tumor brought on by the trauma. If it's the latter, it could have a massive blood supply or vein, and cutting into it could instantly kill her. I would make a (very) small cut/use a needle and see if you can push anything out (hard pus, liquid/etc) before trying to snip it off or anything serious. Make sure to flush it good and apply antibiotic ointment.
