Most bears I've seen have usually been from the backside as they were running away. Seeing one coming towards you would be very nerve racking. In my home town we would have problem bears every fall. They would spend the summer eating from tourists; either gargabe or from feeding them and when the tourists left the bears would come into town looking for food. I think the tourists now are better educated about the dangers of bears.
Whoa! I'd be shaking too. I've only run into a bear once. DH and I were hiking in Baxter State Park in ME. We came around a corner of the trail and there was a mama and two cubs standing in our way. The cubs went up trees, one on each side of the trail. Mama started to take a few steps toward us. We knew enough not to try to walk between them. So we crossed the stream and climbed up an almost vertical embankment. We followed the stream until we were well past where the bears were, climbed back down, found the path and continued back to the campground. We told the ranger there and he said we probably were never in any danger. They knew the bears in that area well and they respected humans and kept out of their way. I'm still glad we were able to get around them without finding out for sure! They're really BIG! But darn, those cubs were cute!
There has been one bear sighting in my town according to the CT DEP website. I think we saw evidence of one on a hiking trail about three miles from our house. Broken branches and fur along the sides of the trail.
