Wrath's Marans

Pics
I got some pics of the Olive Eggers. I see 2 boys/1 girl but I'm not very keen on pea combs. I'm just looking at the color, they are 6 weeks

What say you?

An EE does not have any standard so they can be a real mixed bag of genetics. Your EE, Esther if I remember her name correctly has a pea comb and lays green eggs. So we know that she has at least one copy of the blue egg gene and at least one copy of the pea comb gene.

Your rooster is a BCM so he has 0 copies of the pea comb gene. If Esther has 2 copies of the gene all of the chicks will get 1 copy of the gene from her and 0 copies from the rooster and all of the will show a pea comb

If Esther has only one copy she will pass it on to 50% of the chicks. These chicks will get a pea com. The other 50% will get 0 copies of the pea comb gene and will get straight combs.

I believe that’s the basics anyway. There are also some genes that cause rose and walnut type combs and that’s where I get really confused and can no longer follow the logic. Maybe your EE has some of those genes and that’s why you’re chicks combs don’t quite look perfectly pea or straight? EEs can have anything hiding in there genes

I understand what you mean about pea combs. I like them in Brahmas, the small comb emphasises the large size, but in most other breeds I’m not a fan. That’s why I like cream legbar olive eggers, despite their typically paler eggs and less prolific laying.

I've always assumed these are straight combs but discussing with @TexasBlues and @Tstraub in an OE thread that these are single row pea.

So is it correct to say the pea comb is dominant and I wouldn't see straight combs in my BCM x EE cross at F1?

This is Barry. I got him at the same time as Blue, he was a few weeks younger and not pure bred. I gave him away, but wish I kept him. He is younger here but see his comb, it’s certainly a pea but not so much a triple comb, just a somewhat linear mess. This is common of heterozygous pea combs. He was (or still is) White Brahma cross red sex link, but inherited way more Brahma traits. The big indicators of him being crossbred are the comb and his lack of toe feathers.

I don’t know why I included so much info about him, just wanted to show how the pea comb crosses to the single, like yours has here.

I for one love the bonus info you included. I have been reading your posts across several different threads for over a year and I’m just now learning that your Blue had a brother named Barry. I love it blueberry. Names that go together are the best.

I have known about Wrath’s King/Kong Joann/Jett forever now I’m loving your Blue/Barry

I completely agree... Your explanations are super easy to understand. It may still confuse me but if I screenshot it to re-read usually I get it then.

And of course I also
have Black/Betty..👍
