Wrath's Marans

There is an uptick in people contacting me this year for poultry, for sure, compared to last year. I still get an alarming number of people that look at my site and still ask if I have Black Copper, even though I only have the Silver variant, and then they only want the popular Copper Marans. Oh well! I have started hatching, however the weather has got me bummed. 2 weeks of below zero weather is hard on me! I am lucky the old building the hatchery is in is so well insulated. It is an old brick house thats about 10 by 18 or something like that, but since the mortar had failed and it was collapsing outward, we encapsulated it with banding and scaffolding and then sprayed structural foam over the whole exterior, so it is the perfect little hatchery building. It isn't mouse proof though.........

I still like the old shack. We wired power to it and everything! So it holds heat so even though it will hit -24 on Monday ( again :( ) it stays 65 in there.

I can ship eggs, but I don't really want to ship chicks. I won't be able to ship anything until this weather relents! Not even set to get above freezing until the end of next week!
That's brutal cold. We've been hovering 20s - 30s so now gotta another 2 day storm starting tonight.
Getting my NPIP this year is a priority and hopefully by next season be ramped to ship and the good feedback is promising.
I've had a couple local people ask for BBS Silvers already so that's been exciting also.

Hope your hatches are going great.

A hatch house!? You've done made me jealous! Sounds like you're gonna be busy this year! I've also had quite a few old customers contacting me about chicks (not BCM) I suppose folks are starting to realize that most hatchery birds are sub par in so many ways.

I'm wondering if we are entering a Covid 2.0 mass chaos with the uncertainty of where egg prices might be escalating to.

Cheapest egg prices are still 4/dozen at our local Wal-Mart.

The cheap eggs at the local Walmart are $5.46 for a dozen large white and $9.02 for 18pk of extra large white. The shelves are sparsely stocked and often sold out. The brown eggs labeled organic or free range are much higher.

Thankfully we have been fortunate getting eggs from our flock so far all winter. ❤️ Even had a few to share with family.

I did not raise chicks last spring so I wasn't sure what we'd have this winter.

My 6 MMM that turned 1 last spring molted quickly and went right back to laying.

I have 2 Wyandottes that turned 2 last spring did the same. I was surprised at how well they have layed in their second winter. Love them!

I have 5 CLB that will be 5 yrs old in April. I am still waiting to see what they do this year. :idunno

I will add some chicks this year. Don't know if it will be broody, bator or purchased chicks or combination. :D

I think it will be interesting how chick sells go this year at feed stores.

$5.46 for a dozen large white art Walmart here. I just raised my price to $5.00 a dozen last week. I don't know what's to come, but I'm sure it'll get worse before it gets better.

Hi @wrathsfarm, sorry I’ve had that same notifications issue again 😩. I’ll have a look through but is there anything you want me to respond to?
Not that I can think of off hand. I've always got something brewing so I'm sure there's questions I have somewhere. 👍

I do need to get pics posted of the POLs soon so I get notes on them and figure out who to pair up or sell. Weather hasn't been nice here, tho.

Dbl white band from Ravens 3 was the last to start laying and she's consistently laying the darkest. Back row far left is what she's been laying since her first week but then she layed that far right egg. I'm guessing a weird glitch to not get coated but it also had egg yolk covering it. No busted eggs in nest box, so I'm assuming just a glitch in her paint line.

She layed the center one today.
