Wrath's Marans

Idea on gender? Look way too young yet.
Try to get some pics without the red light.

Are they all Marans? 4th little one from left with the mostly white face looks like a mix. Hard to tell tho, I could be wrong.

More pics please...♥️
Here they are

It's one of the fun parts of having Marans.. Those unexpected different colors of eggs.
Here's a wonky 2nd egg....there's a lot going on here.
I feel like I should run paint thinner thru the jets to stop the spitting and sputtering. 🤣

Edit.... dated it wrong, she layed it today 2/24.

Disclaimer....I won't really do that.

Do most BCM x Easter eggers look like marans at the chick stage?
I my limited experience with breeding BCM x EE all of the chicks have had at least one thing that would disqualify them as a Marans. Pea comb, beard feathers, green or yellow legs, blue plumage. Some of them do come out mostly the classic penguin pattern on a Marans chick but if I look close enough I can spot something that lets me know it’s a cross. This year I’m planning to do some back crossing hopefully I won’t get anyone confused for a pure Marans.

Generally yes as the birchen allele is dominant to the duckwing and partridge patterns common in easter eggers. This is expressed in the chicks in the same way as it would be in a BCM chick. This is true unless the Easter egger is dominant white.

Yes to agree with @Tstraub I also should say that differences exist like different comb types or white earlobes. But the black back and yellow belly down is expected in this cross.

The 3 I hatched in 2023 were pretty mossy early with a tell tale brown tinge on their heads at hatch. All 3 were boys tho so that could be the mossy factor.

Last year's were penguin looking at hatch. Hard to tell apart if I didn't leg band them.
