i have a Silkie hen that seems to have wry neck. Research says to give Vit E and Selenium. I am having trouble working out the dose. The tablets I have are Vit E 12mg with Selenium 55mcg. Does anyone know how many I need to add to 1kg food? Thanks

Wow, what timing! I was just going to post a thread about wry neck as I think one of my hens has it. There's another thread that gave the recipe for a remedy; check it out here. Scroll to the bottom for an excellent post by Starseed with the recipe. I just started this last night on my hen, and was surprised she made it through the night. Here's what I am using:

-Half a bottle of Poly-Vi-Sol (without iron)
-Five 200IU Vitamin E capsules
-~170 mcg Selenium

I mixed all that together and gave her half a dropper last night. The dosage of the mixture is half a dropper twice per day. I'll come back and let you know how she looks in a day or two.

I am in the UK. Just checked and Poly V Sol is only sold on Amazon UK and it is the one with iron. Wondering if there is a UK equivalent?

Hi

How old is your silkie? Why do you want to mix medication into a kg of food. You would be better dosing her direct. I'm in the UK and there is a vitamin supplement specially for poultry which is made by Nettex and is called Nutri Drops. It comes in a little bottle with a dropper and can be added to water or drops can be mixed into a little scrambled egg or dropped directly into the beak. I would not give selenium as a supplement. Only a tiny amount is required and there is enough in a little scrambled egg or tuna without risking overdosing with a supplement. It can be toxic if you give too much. I believe people puncture the vitamin E capsules and squirt one a day into the birds beak.
I'm not sure if you are aware but wry neck is really just a symptom of several possible ailments and not a disease in itself. Vitamin deficiency is one possibility but the most common cause of wry neck in adolescent birds (hence asking the age of the bird) is Marek's Disease and Silkies are particularly prone to it. Vitamin supplementation may help with a Marek's attack but once they have the disease they carry it for life and will be prone to future attacks if they survive this one and they actively shed the virus whilst they are symptomatic. It may not be Marek's as Silkies are also prone to head injuries etc but worth bearing it in mind. If you have any cockerels or roosters in with her, it would be best to remove them or her and I would treat her individually to make sure that she is getting enough of the supplements and also just getting enough to eat because wry neck can make it quite difficult for them to eat and particularly drink effectively. It is a good idea to make them a wet mash by soaking their food in water until it turns to mush and mix in a little scrambled egg or cottage cheese or yoghurt. That way they don't need to drink very much at all.

Thanks. I have some Nutri Drops, but didn’t know if they were the right thing. She is 30 weeks old. She was attacked by our Cockerel a few weeks ago, so I have been wondering if she had some brain damage from that. She does keep flicking her head as well. I don’t know much about Mareks, but will take a look.

Sorry about your hen! :hugs My favorite hen is dealing with wry neck as well. What helps her is a Vitamin E d-alpha 670 mg gel pill twice a day, mixed with a super B complex pill.
For Selenium I just give her some sunflower seeds or an egg.

I hope your girl heals quickly! :hugs

She is the right age for Marek's and harassment from an adolescent cockerel is one of the most likely triggers for an outbreak of it and it is one of the commonest diseases of poultry under a year old together with coccidiosis, but she may have just sustained a head injury from him.

Is this Vit E Capsule suitable. It is 400iu. I can draw up in a syringe
Ingredients:
Dl-a-Tocopheryl Acetate, Gelatin, Gylcerol, Soybean Oil.
