WV MD PA VA Chickenstock TSC Sat. April 23,2011

I think we should abide by the state rules as well. But... I also think it is our own responsibility to check out the person we are dealing with and their credibility. Ask for proof, papers, don't buy anything you think is a risk. Quarantine new stock. We could ban other states... but we'd loose a lot of vendors and customers. Every action has a reaction. Did anyone ask a paying customer if they were from out of state or refuse to sell? Hummmm. Some of the people who came to this Chickenstock from out of state are awesome breeders, don't want to lose them or their input either. Make sure people know the WV rules up front. Anyone who knows what the rules are can post them here and we can then post them on our blogs and Craigslist and add them to the flyers easily. I'd like to keep coming to these Chickenstocks, and I want it to be fun for everyone.

I am so sick
sickbyc.gif
started with the snots late morning at Chickenstock then increased to body ache and temp last night. Im feeling a bit better so hope Im on the uphill... man, I remember life before brats and I NEVER got sick.

When I spoke with Jonathon, he said any bird under 3 months out of state was expempt from being tested AS LONG AS THE PARENT STOCK WAS NPIP and you had paperwork to prove it. Any birds over 3 months were needing their NPIP paperwork as well as an AI test no more than 10 days prior to day of event (I think it's 10 days...may have changed as I know WV has relaxed a hair... this is so confusing)

In state birds needed to be tested for pollorum thyphoid on the day of the event if they are over 6 months. In state birds were exempt from needing AI testing. I believe any WV bird under 6 months of age does not need to be tested. I wish we could get the rules from the horses mouth on here..

Kat, thanks so very much for my new babies. They are doing well. I kept them warm in my sports bra the rest of the day and they were comfortably napping in just minutes. And, Yes!!! I love being a broody momma

Tonya, thanks for my little splash marans girl. She fit right in with some olive egger pullets I have that are the exact same age.

Im talking with my MD npip people tomorrow about me getting certified to test. There are currently NO testers in Washington Co. so it would be rough doing it without me getting certified.

I am tentatively thinking about a poultry swap at the farm in Sharpsburg at the end of June. I know Gilmanor Farms is in May and I don't want to compete with them. This is going to be a bit different as I am going to encourage more vendors of produce, crafts and poultry products to come as well as bird vendors. Im thinking we might even have a bluegrass band and have everyone bring food and kind of make a party out of it. I have a friend that has a couple of moon bounces and I have a pony for rides to keep the littluns busy. Testing will be a priority as this is where my birds are though they will be located nearly a football field away.

I want to advertise in the Poultry Press and really hit craigslist and feedstores hard. This way we can start building something a bit bigger than what we have at the TSC. Im going to talk with my NPIP people and see how fast I can get rolling because I need a good two months to advertise. What do y'all think

if you look past my baby Roen, you can see the field I'd like to do it in

It's flat and is about 7 acres of open area. we can take hay from it the weekend before to get it low

Here's the front yard where we could possibly do something else? the pony rides?

We also have a lower hayfield with more shade to allow campers so folks can come the night before.

Honest opinions!!! what do you all think?

I told Dave last night that we were taking the camper to Erin's house. He asked me if I was nuts. Now that's a crazy question. And...yep, those are the rules as I know them. As far as out of state buyers...as long as the birds are NPIPed they can happily go across state lines. I know a few of us are also licensed for VA.

and... and Buff Orphs and Guineas. lol That sounds like a blast.

So... as long as I have my WV papers I don't need to do anything to bring my chicks to MD? Thanks for all the info you just gave.

Denis and I were just talking about doing the same thing this fall. We live right off I81 north of Martinsburg. Close to WalMart, hotels and food. We have 22 acres people could camp and have a good time on with their chickies. Lots of parking, water and bathrooms. This could be a great year!

Yes!! the buff orps and the guineas are going to be heading into my new bator I just ordered

It's a 3 tray cabinet with two lights and two fans and I've heard they are every bit as good as the sportsman but, a fraction of the cost!! I am so pumped. Im going to see how it goes then maybe get one to raffle off at the swap in June.. 18th?

why not the 25th?

WOW! That sounds great. Let me know how it does please. Your Rosecombs and Trukey eggs are already cookin'.

I could sure use another bator. What about MD. Do I need to do anything to come there? Or just have my ducks in a row in WV. lol I am so lined up.

Each state is a little different but I think your flock will need to be certified AI clean within 14 days of the date of transport. I don't know about the rest.

We had a good turn out there but, I don't want my farm swap to compete with it. Id like to do it at least a month apart from one of our chickenstocks.
If we really want to do a summer stock... I may wait and do the big farm swap in the fall.

I know some of you may be concerned with the traffic through a swap on private property compared to one on commercial w/ main road frontage but, Im promising you guys there will be plenty of buyers. Im very good at advertising and designing ads and flyers and we've had a few events here before that brought in a lot of people. Gilmanor Farms is HUGE The Troy Swap is HUGE. We don't have one of those anywhere close and my property is close the interstate 81 & 70 junction and is close to PA, WV and VA. I think it could really take off. Of course, I would need all of your help to do that.

Maybe we could consider a couple of options. We could do the MD Poultry Swap in June and do the summerstock at the end of July then TSC in Sept (which I think is too much) OR we do the MD Poultry Swap in June, skip summerstock and do fallstock at Gower's ...so each place get's one time a year. (I like this one and that way things stay fresh. Remember, after thevery first swap when we wanted to do it every weekend
lol.png
We knew that this was so fun because it was special. It's not special anymore if it's every weekend) OR we do summerstock in June at Gower's then do the fall swap in MD.

And, I know some of you may feel like we've already established a clientel and, by moving, we're going to lose all of those people. How did Gower's turn out last year? successful, right? Well, that was a change.. our first time there. I know they, as well as any feedstore would help us advertise for our farm swap because we're not having it at a competing feed store. That was the problem with many feedstores not wanted to post our flyers because they didn't want to promote TSC.

I really think this could be so much fun. I will have to charge a small fee (like $5) though to help cover promoting and .. porto potties

I was thinking of getting another one of those cabinet bators and every vendor gets a chance at winning the bator
Here's two of his

I'd probably wind up being negative but, at least it would help get us started.
