I'm sorry I cannot offer more than moral support, but please keep us posted. We have definitely seen some at-home amputations here on the forums.

We decided to hold off on the amputation and see how the chick is doing in a few days. I’ll do my best to update, one way or another

She’s doing okay today, considering she managed to escape her wrap multiple times (I’m still figuring out how to best secure it, especially on a small wiggly bird). She’s definitely a little low on energy which I’m not surprised about, but is continually living up to her nickname of “Butt” which gives me hope.

she’s taking good amounts of food and water and I’ve managed to get some tiny doses of penicillin in her while we wait for the cephalexin and clindamycin to ship.

I don’t know if I can afford a vet amputation, is there anything I can do myself? I’d rather surrender than lose her but I don’t really want either

I haven't done an amputation myself but one of my chicks had her wing eaten off by a dog. It was terrible to go through but she made it and is living her life to the fullest now! I hope everything goes well

UPDATE

I’ve been taking care of her for several days and she’s been doing a lot better on the penicillin (the blue under her skin has completely receded, unknown if due to circulation or blood poisoning)

however, physical examination of the wing seems to show that the bones are not damaged. The wound area is still just as swollen and the abscess has grown, in at least small part because she’s an actual Houdini who keeps picking at it every time she gets out. I’m thinking it’s either infection (I know it’s solid in chickens) or a tumor and I’m not sure which. The skin/fat pull away from it when there’s no clot in the wound. I tried gently squeezing from under it but it didn’t budge.

She has a healthy appetite and eats/drinks a lot once I pull her out of the wrap. I’ve been gently dabbing at the wound to clean it when I pull her out.

note that the yellow in the picture is due to wiping with Betadine and the dark clumps outside the wound are from the various medications sticking to her , her skin itself looks fairly healthy.

Good that your bird is doing better.
The blue was bruising, or a possible hematoma. If your bird had blood poisoning, they'd be deathly ill.

It’s hard to tell from the first photo but her whole wing went blue for a day or so.

The hole should heal over.

Just keep her separate from the other birds, so they don't peck at the wound?

If you have to, you can dress it with gauze, & wrap. But you'll have to change it every 1-2 days, & let it air out as often as possible to help it heal properly. Use Triple Antibiotic ointment to keep it moist.

I’ve been doing exactly that but more changes and probably not enough airing out. I’ve been keeping her separate from the other chicks but close to them for company and regularly applying neosporin. I started airing it out more today when I reconfirmed her bones were all in the right place so hopefully it’ll get better fast!

Yeah, more airing out would be great.

I guess having her separate with friends is okay.
