Wyandotte

Are the buff orpingtons good layers? What do you think is the meanest chicken (so I can say away from buying them) Thank you!!

LOVE our BOs! The three we have now are the three friendliest chickens in the flock. Our "middle child" BO, Nugget, is my son's absolute pet (and is firmly on the will never be eaten list)- and all three are quite eager to be petted, picked up and just generally have attention from anyone who gets within range of them, frequently flying onto a shoulder if you are standing in the coop or gladly hopping onto your back if you have leaned over, and happiest if you sit down and give them a lap. Among our current flock, they are second only to the GLW/SLW when it comes to laying....easily giving us 5-6 eggs a week each (the Wyandottes are steady at 6-7 a week).

Buff Orpingtons are good layers. Our typically give us 3 (occasionally 4 eggs per hen per week). The most aggressive chickens are the various game chickens. Mediterranean breeds (Leghorns, ect.) are good layers but can be aggressive, and are definitely high strung and flighty. Mine always screamed bloody murder whenever I handled them (it's why I don't have them anymore). Rhode Island Reds are also good layers, but can be aggressive (particularly the roosters).

Thank you!!

How do you guys feel about the plymouth rock or rhode island reds?
I've had one Rhode Island Red, from a hatchery. She's been as good a layer as my Wyandottes. Rhode Island Reds have a single comb, so they aren't quite as hardy as Wyandottes or other rose or pea combed birds. She's done fine in the heat, but has received a little frostbite on the comb during below 0 temperatures. My Rhode Island Red hasn't been as personable, inquisitive, or intelligent as my Wyandottes. She hasn't been mean to me, but is hard on my Easter Egger.

Do you like your rhode island red or your wyandotte better ( as far as friendliness) Thanks

How many eggs per week do your Wyandottes Lay .
I was wanting to compare the Hatchery birds VS the birds raised for
Show Conformation. I know sometimes that is all that is bred for most jsut want enough eggs to raise replacement birds.
I am also new to the group! I will get the first group of Wyandotte hatching eggs next week . These are from show lines. Beautiful birds.

If your Wyandottes are laying well which hatchery did you purchase them from?
I think 5-6 eggs a week is a great laying bird. Especially since they aren't a hybrid bred for production.
