Wyandottes and a "tendencey toward dominance"

I adore my cochins - but they aren't laying yet so I have no idea how well they lay. They are very sweet and lovable, though.

I also have two black australorps - and they are sweet, funny and friendly. They are the clowns of the whole flock. They'll do anything
for a treat -- including come up on the porch and look in the door to see where I am hiding. They even climb right over the dog if she's laying in their way

My barred rock is a bit more stand-offish, but agressive when it comes to food - she'll push everyone else out of her way to be the first in line. She also never liked chicks - always picked on them. She is sweet, and will hang out with you, as long as you stay hands off.

If I were to get more laying hens for egg production, I'd be getting more australorps.

I'll weigh in here as the owner of 3 SLW hens and a former SLW roo. We had to rehome the roo because he was terrorizing my little beagle mix. As for the hens, mine are calm, sweet birds. They are not at the top of the pecking order, but neither are they at the bottom; but they certainly defer to the 3 BR hens that rule all.
For a sweet bird I'd go with Speckled Sussex. I have one that follows me EVERYWHERE when I head outside. Yesterday she even followed me into the basement. I've not handled my birds much, so they will all flock around me but don't really appreciate being handled...so i just walked back to the basement door, the SS trailing about 10 ft behind; chittering contentedly the entire time.

I was wondering if anyone is familiar with the quality of the buff wyandottes that are sold by Welps Hatchery. They seem to be the only hatchery that sells sexed buff wyandottes and I really like the breed. The last time I bought straight run chicks, I received something like 90% roosters, and while I know that is the luck of the draw, I have no use for them and there are just so many you can give away as pets............
