A new flock in Wyoming! Yayyyy!! And a new name on the Wyoming thread! Welcome to both! I am up in Northern Wyoming - wayyyy up in Northern Wyoming. I'm so northern that I see Montana out of my kitchen window.

I think I'm skipping the chick thing this year. Got plenty of chickens now, and a good variety, and since we'll be doing a lot of extensive traveling this year - and since our little chicken sitter is going with us on many of those trips - it'll be easier after Ken finishes his year as Grand Master. In August he'll be Deputy Grand Master until the following August, and then he'll be Grand Master until August of 2019. So too much traveling coming up.

I'm hoping some of that traveling brings you my way B!

Good morning everyone!

What does the weather look like where you are today? It's 43* here in Carbon county now and expected to get up to 45*. The wind has been busy melting snow and drying up mud.

I suppose it's too soon to think spring might be coming?

It Chinooked around 1 AM this morning. It was 10°F yesterday and now it is 44°F. The ground is still frozen here so there is standing water on top of ice on top of the ground.

I have a tomato plant that has blossoms on it. Does that count?

I don't see any signs of buds swelling. I can guarantee that we are far from seeing our last snowfall. Have a good day and don't get blown away.

I figured it was too early. The weather guy on the radio said it's going to do a complete flip back to winter this weekend.

Oh well, it's coming sooner or later.

(Wow, tomato blossoms...that's cool.)

My name's Sara. My family and I live in Laramie and we're new to BYC. Any advice on the best breeds for this area? We want egg production mostly and gentle breeds that will get along with each other. We have one golden laced wyandotte, one silver laced, one barred rock, (I believe) a Brahma? and a golden bantam or something I can't seem to identify. Any advice appreciated. Also, I know this is not the quail forum, but does anyone know where in the Cheyenne/Laramie area I can get some quail without having to buy 50 or 100? I only want about 10. Thanks for any advice you have.

This is Wyoming. In Wyoming you have to get a permit from the Wyoming G&F and have your "facilities" inspected before you can get any quail. This applies to any variety of quail. Because a permit is required and the G&F keep track of everyone that has a permit they can put you in touch with those who have quail legally and would be willing to sell some to you.

Either stop in your local G&F office or contact your local game warden and they can get you started.

Hi Sara

It's nice to have you on the WY state thread! My name is Debby and I'm west of you in Carbon county. Have you lived in Laramie for long? My husband and I moved here last spring so I don't know who has what as far as birds for sale. Have you checked with your farm store (like TSC) to see if they're going to be getting chicks in? I overheard a sales lady talking to another customer a couple weeks ago, she was saying they'd have chicks in about a month. I've never raised quail so can't help you there.

Hope you find the birds you want!

Debby it's nice to meet you. We've been here in Laramie since October. Before that we lived in Cheyenne for 5 years. I know Murdoch's and Bomgaars are selling chicks the end of the month and in March. Planning to get a few more baby chicks to add to our flock as soon as they do.

Nice to meet you, Sara. Boy, you and Debby are practically neighbors!! I'm waaaayyy up here in the northwest, just about 6 miles from the Montana border - close enough to my family in South Dakota to drive out for a few days but far enough that they'd better call and check first before they leave home!

Just about any chickens do well here - I have such a mixed flock I can't even keep them all straight anymore. I have everything from Tank, the Behemoth Light Brahma, to Smudge, the teeny little Silkie. I have learned the the Brahmas don't do as well in the heat and have to be watched pretty closely.

Looks like you got pointed in the right direction as far as the quail go..... (You know, I read that sentence over twice and I still get a mental image of @R2elk with his pointer finger extended in the direction of a flock of quail in the distance)

Keep dry, everyone...I know the flooding is getting pretty doggone bad up here.
