Debby it's nice to meet you. We've been here in Laramie since October. Before that we lived in Cheyenne for 5 years. I know Murdoch's and Bomgaars are selling chicks the end of the month and in March. Planning to get a few more baby chicks to add to our flock as soon as they do.

I have a cousin in Laramie and other family in Cheyenne...next time I go down I-80 I'll wave to you!

Nice to meet you, Sara. Boy, you and Debby are practically neighbors!! I'm waaaayyy up here in the northwest, just about 6 miles from the Montana border - close enough to my family in South Dakota to drive out for a few days but far enough that they'd better call and check first before they leave home!

Just about any chickens do well here - I have such a mixed flock I can't even keep them all straight anymore. I have everything from Tank, the Behemoth Light Brahma, to Smudge, the teeny little Silkie. I have learned the the Brahmas don't do as well in the heat and have to be watched pretty closely.

Looks like you got pointed in the right direction as far as the quail go..... (You know, I read that sentence over twice and I still get a mental image of @R2elk with his pointer finger extended in the direction of a flock of quail in the distance)

Keep dry, everyone...I know the flooding is getting pretty doggone bad up here.

No flooding that I've heard of around us Blooie. At least not yet, the river is rising as might be expected.

You stay high and dry, ok?

The first male Red-winged Blackbirds showed up today. They weren't very happy with me since I didn't have food out for them.

My tomato plant has taken off in the last few days growing about 6" a day. It now has tomatoes on it but they are still a long way from being ripe. It just doesn't fit in with all the snow outside.

Hi Bob,

I take it you have a greenhouse? Nothing compares to homegrown tomatoes...hope yours does well for you.

Hi Bob,

I do have a greenhouse but at this time of year it freezes at night and I am too cheap to put a heater in there. I have 3 huge windows with a southern exposure in my living room which is where the tomato plant is right now. This particular plant (Gold Nugget) can do well container grown. It is very prolific with very delicious yellow cherry tomatoes. It is not a hybrid so I get to save seeds from it to grow additional plants.

On sunny days my greenhouse gets over 100°F. This is the only tomato plant that I have found that will bloom and set tomatoes in those conditions. Most other tomatoes will not even bloom in those high temperatures.

If you plan on gardening this year, you should check out the benefits of azomite. I live on a sand dune and the difference that azomite has made in my produce is amazing.

Since I live on a sand dune it is necessary to keep applying azomite since the sand doesn't hold anything especially water.

"Volcanic rock dust" that's interesting. My husband is the true gardener (he's responsible for the veggies and I do flowers), I'm going to ask him if he's familiar with it. We had a huge garden in FL but with our work schedules last year, we didn't have time to do any here yet. I miss digging in the dirt!

Thanks for the link!

Welcome! I'm Blooie, way up on the opposite side of the state! Those breeds should all do well here...I also have Silkies, believe or not, and they have done great up here near Yellowstone, even in an unheated and uninsulated coop! They even go out to play in the snow.....
