There's lots of conjecture over that, but our Greek instructor in Bible College put it in a whole new light. Since the Greek symbol that was used to denote the word "Christ" starts with a letter that looks much like an X, (chai), some people began shortening Christmas to "Xmas" or "chai-mas". After hearing his explanation / breakdown of that, seeing "Xmas" doesn't bother me as much as it used to.
